Chapter 1 - The Last Five Minutes

Celeste had just poured an entire bottle of milk over one-year-old Mia when the little girl slipped backward onto the padded nursery floor.

“Stop crying!” Celeste snapped. “You don’t get everything you want!”

Mia screamed and reached helplessly toward the bottle rolling beneath a white lacquered cabinet.

Rain hammered the panoramic windows of the Asteria, Daniel Calder’s 240-foot superyacht, as dark Atlantic water rose and fell beyond the glass.

Then Grace Moreno rushed through the nursery door.

“Get away from her!”

Grace had served as Mia’s private pediatric nurse for eight months. At forty-four, she had learned to stay calm around frightened children, grieving parents, and wealthy families who confused authority with competence.

But she was not calm now.

She scooped Mia up, pressing the trembling little girl against her chest.

“You never touch her like that again.”

Celeste Calder stared at her.

For one second, Daniel’s thirty-nine-year-old sister looked furious enough to strike Grace.

Then footsteps sounded in the corridor.

Daniel.

And Celeste transformed.

The rage vanished.

Her shoulders began shaking.

She stepped backward from the spilled bottle.

“Daniel!”

Mia’s father rushed inside and stopped.

His daughter’s hair and pale blue pajamas were soaked with milk.

Grace held her.

Celeste looked terrified.

“Thank God you’re here! Grace lost her temper with Mia.”

Grace stared at her.

“That is a lie.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Why is my daughter covered in milk?”

Celeste pointed.

“Ask her.”

For one terrible moment, Grace saw exactly what Celeste had constructed.

Mia was crying.

Grace was holding her.

Celeste stood several feet away.

Daniel had arrived after the act.

And Daniel had trusted his sister his entire life.

Daniel held out his arms.

“Give me Mia.”

Grace handed her over carefully.

Mia buried her wet face against her father’s shoulder.

“What happened?” Daniel asked again.

Celeste began crying.

“She wouldn’t stop screaming. Grace got frustrated and grabbed the bottle.”

“That never happened.”

Celeste turned sharply.

“You screamed at her!”

“I screamed at you.”

“Because I caught you.”

Grace’s fear disappeared.

She looked upward.

“You don’t have to believe either of us.”

Daniel followed her gaze.

A ceiling-mounted security camera pointed toward the entire nursery.

“Check the last five minutes.”

“No.”

Celeste answered instantly.

Too instantly.

Daniel slowly turned.

“No?”

Celeste swallowed.

“I mean Mia needs you. Do this later.”

Daniel removed the yacht-control tablet from the wall cradle.

“If Grace did this, the camera will prove it.”

Celeste lunged.

“Daniel, wait!”

He pulled the tablet out of reach.

Thunder rolled outside.

Daniel opened the security application.

The nursery camera loaded.

Celeste’s face turned white.

Daniel noticed.

“What are you afraid I’m going to see?”

The recording began.

Five minutes earlier.

Mia sat peacefully on the padded rug with a stuffed rabbit.

Celeste entered carrying a bottle.

Grace was nowhere in the nursery.

Celeste picked Mia up.

Mia reached for the bottle.

Celeste pulled it away.

“Want this?”

Mia whimpered.

Celeste looked toward the door.

Then directly toward the camera.

She repositioned herself so her back partially blocked the lens.

But not completely.

Daniel leaned closer.

On-screen, Celeste whispered:

“Cry for Daddy.”

Then she tipped the milk over Mia’s head.

Grace inhaled sharply beside him.

Daniel stopped breathing.

The footage showed Mia slipping.

Celeste did not reach for her.

Instead, she picked up her phone.

She typed something.

Then Grace rushed in.

The confrontation played exactly as Grace had described.

Daniel slowly lowered the tablet.

Mia clutched his collar.

“Why?”

Celeste’s mouth trembled.

“I lost control.”

“You just told me Grace did it.”

“I panicked.”

“You looked at the camera first.”

“I didn’t know what I was doing.”

Grace said quietly, “She knew exactly what she was doing.”

Celeste spun.

“Stay out of this!”

Daniel’s voice changed.

“No. You stay away from my daughter.”

Celeste stared at him.

“You’re choosing an employee over your sister?”

“I’m choosing what I saw.”

That sentence landed like a physical blow.

Celeste’s face hardened.

“You have no idea what Grace has been doing.”

Grace frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

Celeste looked at Daniel.

“Check Mia’s medical log.”

Daniel hesitated.

Grace’s expression changed.

“Why?”

Celeste smiled through tears.

“Because your precious nurse has been changing Mia’s medication records.”

Grace went pale.

Daniel looked at her.

“I haven’t changed anything.”

Celeste said, “Then you won’t mind proving it.”

Grace stepped toward the cabinet containing Mia’s health binder.

The binder was gone.

She stopped.

“That was here an hour ago.”

Daniel’s suspicion returned.

Celeste saw it.

Even after being caught on camera, she had found another battlefield.

Daniel looked toward the tablet.

“Captain Reeves.”

The yacht’s captain answered immediately through the intercom.

“Yes, Mr. Calder?”

“Lock the vessel’s security archive.”

There was a pause.

“Sir?”

“No deletions. No remote access. Nobody leaves the yacht without my authorization.”

Celeste’s eyes widened.

Daniel looked at his sister.

“Start with every nursery recording from the last thirty days.”

Captain Reeves replied, “Understood.”

Then another voice came through the system.

The yacht’s security chief.

“Mr. Calder, we may have a problem.”

Daniel looked at the speaker.

“What?”

“Someone already accessed the nursery archive.”

“When?”

“Eleven minutes ago.”

Daniel slowly looked at Celeste.

The security chief continued.

May you like

“And whoever did it deleted six recordings.”
