Chapter 7 - The Man Carrying the Evidence

Laura moved before Rebecca could stop her.

“Miles.”

He froze.

The evidence case remained in his hand.

“Where are you going?”

“Secure storage.”

“Which is downstairs, not in the garage.”

Miles looked tired.

“Laura.”

“Give Rebecca the case.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Chain of custody.”

Rebecca stepped beside Laura.

“Then document transfer to me.”

Miles shook his head.

“That isn’t procedure.”

Laura lowered her voice.

“Snowglass paid Susan’s medical debt.”

The color left his face.

Rebecca watched him carefully.

“You did not legally obtain private bank records,” Miles said.

“No,” Rebecca answered. “We found a publicly recorded satisfaction tied to the same company implicated on the recorder.”

Miles’ shoulders sagged.

Laura felt no triumph.

Only disappointment.

“How much did they ask you to do?”

He looked toward the elevators.

“Not here.”

“Now.”

“Laura—”

“You carried evidence toward a garage after telling me your account mysteriously deleted footage.”

Miles stared at her.

Then he placed the case on a nearby chair.

“I deleted the footage.”

Laura’s throat tightened.

Rebecca asked, “At whose request?”

“Celeste.”

“Why?”

Miles closed his eyes.

“My wife needed surgery. Insurance denied the second procedure. I had judgments, liens. I was going to lose the house.”

Laura said quietly, “So Celeste paid you.”

“She said it was help.”

“And then?”

“She asked for favors.”

“What favors?”

“At first, information. When you were at the resort. Who visited headquarters. Which cameras covered executive offices.”

“And later?”

“The corridor footage.”

Emma had been telling the truth.

“What did it show?”

Miles looked sick.

“Emma leaving her room. Celeste and Owen talking near Harlan’s office. Owen dropping the recorder.”

Rebecca asked, “Did it show Emma picking it up?”

“Yes.”

“Did it show Celeste carrying Emma?”

Miles nodded.

Laura clenched her fists.

“Did it show her putting Emma on the floor?”

“No. No camera inside patient rooms.”

“Where is the deleted footage?”

“I wiped the local server.”

“Is there a backup?”

Miles hesitated.

Laura saw it.

“There is.”

“Security vendor cloud replication.”

“Can Celeste access it?”

“Not directly.”

“Can you?”

“Yes.”

“Then recover it.”

Miles shook his head.

“If I do that, I admit obstruction.”

Rebecca’s tone turned hard.

“You just admitted it to an attorney.”

“I know.”

“So choose what you want the next sentence of your life to be.”

Miles looked toward Emma’s room.

“I never thought she’d touch the kid.”

Laura’s anger broke loose.

“You thought falsifying security evidence in a child-custody case was what? Administrative?”

“I thought Celeste wanted leverage against you.”

“She wanted my daughter.”

“I know that now.”

“You knew enough.”

Miles flinched.

Laura stopped.

Rebecca was right.

Rage gave Celeste evidence.

Truth needed discipline.

“Recover the backup,” Laura said.

“I’ll cooperate.”

“And the recorder?”

Miles looked at the case.

“I was taking it to Owen.”

Rebecca’s eyes narrowed.

“Under whose instruction?”

“Celeste called me ten minutes ago.”

“What did she say?”

“That the recorder was company property and had to be transferred to legal.”

Laura laughed coldly.

“Without my attorney.”

“Yes.”

“Will you testify?”

Miles looked terrified.

“If I testify, I lose my job.”

Rebecca said, “If you don’t, you may lose considerably more.”

He nodded.

“I’ll testify.”

The first power reversal came before lunch.

Miles restored the deleted security footage from the offsite vendor.

It showed Emma emerging cautiously from her room with Snowy tucked beneath one arm.

It showed Celeste and Owen near Harlan’s office.

Owen dropped the recorder.

Emma picked it up.

Ten minutes later, Celeste entered Emma’s room.

Twenty-seven minutes after that, Laura arrived.

Celeste’s explanation—that Emma imagined the entire encounter—collapsed.

But the footage created a new question.

At 6:36 P.M., before Celeste noticed Emma, Owen carried three banker boxes into Harlan’s office.

At 6:49, he carried only two out.

“What was in the third box?” Laura asked.

Miles shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Rebecca zoomed in.

The remaining box bore an accounting archive label.

VALE PEAK RESORTS — TRUST / RELATED-PARTY TRANSACTIONS

Laura’s pulse quickened.

Those records belonged at corporate headquarters.

Not in a clinic.

She called the internal audit director.

Her call went to voicemail.

Her executive access was suspended.

Celeste now controlled the building.

Then Nathan arrived.

He asked to speak privately.

Laura refused.

“Whatever you say, Rebecca hears.”

Nathan glanced at Miles.

“And him?”

“Miles is confessing.”

Nathan looked startled.

Laura watched his fear.

“You should try it.”

He sat.

“I received nine hundred thousand dollars.”

Rebecca opened her notebook.

“From Snowglass?”

“Yes.”

“Loan or payment?”

Nathan swallowed.

“Payment.”

Laura felt the betrayal even though she already knew.

“For what?”

Nathan looked at her.

“To sign the affidavit.”

Silence.

“And?” Rebecca asked.

Nathan’s eyes filled with shame.

“To petition for temporary custody if Celeste’s guardianship filing failed.”

Laura whispered, “You were her backup.”

“Yes.”

Emma’s father had agreed to help take her away.

Nathan rubbed his palms together.

“I thought Celeste was trying to remove you from the company. I didn’t know she was falsifying medical records.”

“You knew she was paying you to swear against me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“My firm owed four million dollars. I was weeks from bankruptcy.”

Laura stared at him.

Nathan had always feared failure more than dishonor.

Now she understood the price of that flaw.

He reached into his coat.

“I brought something.”

A printed email.

From Celeste.

Once Emma is with you, Laura loses credibility. Do not discuss the trust. Your debt is handled.

Rebecca took it.

“This matters.”

Nathan nodded.

“There’s more.”

He slid a flash drive across the table.

“All my messages with her.”

Laura did not touch it.

“Why give this to me now?”

Nathan looked toward Emma’s door.

“Because last night Emma asked me if I was helping Aunt Celeste make you disappear.”

Laura’s eyes burned.

Nathan whispered, “I realized what I had become.”

Before anyone answered, Rebecca’s phone rang.

She listened.

Then her expression hardened.

“What?”

She ended the call.

“The board audit director was fired twenty minutes ago.”

“By Celeste?”

“By acting management.”

“And the trust transaction files?”

Rebecca looked toward the image of the third banker box.

“They’re missing from headquarters.”

The box Owen had carried into Harlan’s office had disappeared.

And the clinic sat in the middle of a blizzard.

No roads open.

May you like

No ordinary way out.

Someone had hidden millions of dollars of evidence somewhere inside the building.
