Chapter 8 - What Nathan Feared

Nathan did not deny owning Harrow.

That surprised Laura.

He walked into the library, poured himself water, and closed the door.

“I formed it three years ago.”

“For what?”

“Investments.”

“With company money?”

“No.”

“With Emma’s?”

“No.”

Laura held up the statements.

“Try again.”

Nathan leaned against the desk.

“Two-point-five million from Emma’s account went into Harrow for forty-eight hours.”

“Why?”

“To cover a margin call.”

Laura stared.

“On what?”

He looked toward Maya.

“Leave.”

Maya did not move.

Laura said, “She stays.”

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“Of course she does.”

He opened his phone and pulled up an account.

A private investment portfolio.

Laura recognized the company name at the top.

Harrow Strategic Partners.

The account showed losses.

Huge losses.

Derivatives tied to aviation fuel prices and airline equities.

“How much?”

Nathan answered, “At the worst point? Twenty-two million.”

Laura’s mouth went dry.

“You gambled twenty-two million dollars.”

“I hedged.”

“You lost.”

“I recovered some.”

“Using Whitmore’s money.”

“Using temporary liquidity.”

“You stole.”

Nathan slammed the glass down.

“I was trying to prevent exposure that would destroy me.”

Laura stared at him.

“Destroy you?”

His face twisted.

“You still don’t understand.”

“Then explain.”

For the first time, Nathan did.

Three years earlier, he had started trading through Harrow.

At first, he made money.

Two million.

Then four.

He had planned to build enough wealth outside Laura’s family so that he would never again feel like a dependent husband.

Then the trades turned.

He borrowed.

Doubled down.

Used personal guarantees.

When lenders demanded more collateral, he moved money.

Small amounts first.

Then larger.

He disguised them as consulting expenses through Whitmore vendors.

Vanessa discovered the scheme when she was conducting a restructuring review.

Laura looked at him.

“That’s how the affair started?”

Nathan closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Vanessa had confronted him.

Then offered help.

She had contacts at Calder Ridge.

If Calder acquired Whitmore Aviation, Nathan would receive a retention package and transaction bonus large enough to cover most of Harrow’s losses.

Laura’s refusal to sell threatened everything.

“So you decided to remove me.”

Nathan shook his head.

“At first, I tried to persuade you.”

“You hired investigators.”

“After you rejected the second offer.”

“You photographed me at grief counseling.”

“I needed leverage.”

Laura almost struck him.

She stopped herself.

Nathan watched her fist close.

“You see how easy this is?”

She opened her hand.

“No. I see how carefully you learned to provoke me.”

He looked away.

“What does Vanessa get?” Laura asked.

“Money.”

“How much?”

“Three million success fee from Calder Ridge.”

“And you?”

“If the transaction closed, eight million cash, plus equity in the merged company.”

Laura calculated.

Not enough to cover twenty-two million.

“You’d still be underwater.”

Nathan said nothing.

“What else?”

He stared at the floor.

Laura understood.

“The guardianship.”

His face tightened.

“If I controlled your trust temporarily, I could approve the sale and restructure debts.”

“You mean hide them.”

“I could fix them.”

“With my company.”

“With our life.”

“My father’s company was never your emergency fund.”

His resentment returned.

“Your father made sure I knew that.”

Laura heard something beneath it.

An old wound.

“He didn’t trust you.”

“He treated me like hired help.”

“He gave you the CFO job.”

“He gave me a title because I married you.”

“That’s not true.”

“You want the truth? Fine. Every room I entered, people looked past me for your approval. Every house we lived in belonged to your trust. Every vacation came from your family office. Every time I bought you something expensive, I knew the money I earned came from a company with your name on the building.”

Laura stared at him.

“And instead of leaving, you decided to steal enough to feel like a man?”

Nathan flinched.

Maya looked away.

Laura instantly regretted saying it.

Not because it was false.

Because cruelty made her sound like him.

Nathan smiled sadly.

“There she is.”

Laura lowered her voice.

“No. I won’t let you use my worst sentence to erase your choices.”

Nathan looked at her for a long moment.

Then said, “You want to know what the two million escrow payment from Emma’s account was for?”

Laura’s heart tightened.

“Yes.”

“The apartment.”

“Vanessa’s?”

“Yes.”

“Why would you buy her an apartment?”

“Because she was blackmailing me.”

Laura stared.

Nathan continued.

“She had copies of Harrow’s records. She threatened to go to you unless I gave her property, money, and a role in the Calder deal.”

“The affair?”

Nathan looked ashamed.

“That came later.”

Laura did not know whether that made it better or worse.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because by then I had already committed crimes.”

The word hung between them.

Crimes.

Not mistakes.

Not financing decisions.

Nathan finally admitted what Laura had been afraid to say.

Maya spoke.

“Then why the guardianship petition?”

Nathan looked toward her.

“Vanessa’s idea.”

Laura frowned.

“You signed it.”

“I did.”

“You hired Bell.”

“Yes.”

“You paid him.”

“Yes.”

“Then don’t hide behind her.”

Nathan swallowed.

“You’re right.”

Laura was not prepared for the answer.

He walked toward the door.

“Where are you going?”

“To the guest room.”

“I’m calling the bank about Emma’s account.”

“I already restored the collateral.”

Laura stared.

“How?”

Nathan stopped.

“Yesterday.”

“With what money?”

He did not answer.

Laura stepped toward him.

“Nathan.”

He looked over his shoulder.

“You think Harrow is the worst thing I did.”

Her skin prickled.

“What did you use to repay Emma’s account?”

Nathan’s expression emptied.

“Ask Olivia about Project Falcon.”

Then he left.

Laura immediately called Olivia.

When Laura said the words, Olivia went silent.

“What is Project Falcon?”

“Laura…”

“What is it?”

Olivia exhaled.

“A confidential aircraft-sale program.”

“How many aircraft?”

“Six.”

“Owned by whom?”

“The company.”

Laura’s heart began pounding.

“Were they sold?”

“Not yet.”

“Then how did Nathan get money?”

Olivia was silent.

Laura understood before she answered.

Deposits.

Buyer deposits on company aircraft.

“How much?”

“Five million dollars.”

Laura closed her eyes.

Nathan had taken money from Emma to cover his private losses.

Then taken corporate transaction deposits to repay Emma.

May you like

He was moving stolen money from one hole to another.

And somewhere in the middle of it all, Calder Ridge was waiting to buy the company cheaply enough to bury the evidence.
