Chapter 16 - Grace

Julian came to the hospital the morning after Grace was born.

He did not enter Ava’s room.

The hospital refused.

He stood with his attorney on another floor while an emergency family-court conference took place remotely.

Ava sat in bed wearing a hospital gown with Grace asleep beside her.

Elena appeared on-screen.

So did Julian.

For the first time since the wine cellar, Ava saw his face live.

He looked exhausted.

Emotional.

Almost sympathetic.

“I just want to see my daughter.”

Ava’s chest hurt.

The judge, Honorable Marissa Feld, was careful.

“This court is not conducting a full custody hearing today.”

Julian’s attorney emphasized Ava’s hospital admissions.

Elena produced obstetric records.

Physical pregnancy complications.

Not psychiatric.

Julian’s attorney cited Ava’s statement about disappearing to Newport.

Elena supplied context.

Julian’s attorney cited Serena.

Elena asked for time to investigate Serena’s reversal.

Then Julian spoke.

“Your Honor, I am frightened.”

Ava stared at him.

“I have watched my wife become increasingly paranoid.”

Elena objected.

The judge allowed only limited factual statements.

Julian continued.

“She accused me of stealing property.”

“You did,” Ava said.

The judge immediately addressed her.

“Mrs. Ward, let counsel speak for you.”

Ava swallowed.

“Sorry.”

Julian’s attorney used even that.

“Your Honor, emotions are obviously extremely high.”

Ava nearly laughed.

She was less than twenty-four hours postpartum.

The judge did not grant Julian emergency custody.

But she ordered something Ava hated.

Grace could not be removed from New York pending the emergency hearing.

Julian would receive a brief supervised hospital visit arranged through staff if medically appropriate and if no criminal protective order barred it.

A full temporary-custody hearing was scheduled in forty-eight hours.

Forty-eight.

Everything had become a countdown again.

Then Thomas Keene called from Rhode Island.

Greyport had filed a motion seeking accelerated resolution because Ward Capital’s defaults jeopardized the loan.

Halcyon’s financial case was also moving.

Two hearings.

Two states.

One newborn.

Ava looked at Grace.

“This is what he planned.”

Elena nodded.

“Not exactly. His original plan depended on false psychiatric detention. That failed.”

“But he still got the custody hearing.”

“Yes.”

Ava felt despair.

Elena continued.

“That is not the same as winning it.”

Serena’s reversal became the central problem.

Why would she return to Julian?

Investigators found the answer.

Julian still controlled a trust account holding $3.4 million for Serena under a deferred compensation agreement.

Her lawyers had not disclosed it during cooperation negotiations.

Julian threatened to contest her ownership.

Serena changed sides.

Money again.

Fear again.

But Serena made another mistake.

She used the same encrypted email account that federal investigators were already monitoring pursuant to warrant.

A message from Julian:

File affidavit tonight. Keep it narrow. No custody-plan discussion.

Serena:

And my account?

Julian:

Released when temporary order enters.

Ava stared at the exchange.

“She sold an affidavit for three point four million.”

Elena nodded.

“That makes it potentially devastating impeachment.”

“Will the judge see it?”

“If admissible and properly introduced.”

The final confrontation was no longer optional.

The custody hearing would happen.

Julian would testify.

Serena would testify.

Ava would testify.

The plan constructed before Grace’s birth would finally be placed against the evidence accumulated after it.

That night Julian received a supervised thirty-minute visit.

Ava chose not to attend.

A nurse remained.

Grace slept most of the time.

When Julian held her, Ava watched from a one-way observation window at Elena’s suggestion only because Ava wanted to know whether she could tolerate it.

Julian cried.

That disturbed her.

“He loves her,” Ava whispered.

Margaret stood beside her.

“Maybe.”

“No. He does.”

Margaret looked at her daughter.

“Love does not erase danger.”

Ava nodded.

She had learned that lesson already.

Julian kissed Grace’s forehead.

For one second Ava remembered the man who assembled the crib with her.

Who talked to Ava’s belly.

Who cried at the ultrasound.

Those moments could have been real.

So could the ledger.

So could the wine cellar.

Human beings were not made simpler by loving someone.

The next morning Ava was discharged.

She returned to her Manhattan townhouse with Grace.

Margaret stayed nearby but not inside unless invited.

Ava wanted one night in her own space before court.

At midnight she sat in the nursery holding Grace.

Her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

The black ledger.

Not the one police had.

Another page.

A message followed.

JULIAN KEPT TWO.

Ava’s heart pounded.

WHO IS THIS?

Reply:

SERENA.

Ava stared.

Another message:

THE SECOND LEDGER HAS THE REAL CUSTODY PAYMENTS.

Then:

I’LL GIVE IT TO YOU.

Ava typed:

WHY?

Serena answered:

BECAUSE JULIAN NEVER INTENDED TO RELEASE MY MONEY.

May you like

Then one final line:

HE’S GOING TO LIE UNDER OATH TOMORROW.
