Chapter 6 - The Woman Behind the Foundation

Vivian Whitmore arrived at Bennett Alpine headquarters wearing ivory wool and pearls.
She looked less like a frightened mother whose son faced criminal charges than a woman attending a merger.
Claire confronted her in the boardroom.
Rebecca remained beside Claire.
Two independent directors stayed as witnesses.
Vivian set down her handbag.
“This spectacle is unnecessary.”
“My daughter was placed in a trash bin.”
“And Marissa has been arrested.”
“Nathan paid her.”
“Allegedly.”
Claire pushed copies of the burner-phone messages across the table.
Vivian did not touch them.
Claire continued.
“You helped file a forged trust amendment.”
Vivian’s expression remained composed.
“Be careful.”
“Is that a threat?”
“It is legal advice.”
“You’re not my lawyer.”
“Thank God.”
The cruelty was effortless.
Claire remembered trying for six years to win this woman’s approval.
Holiday dinners.
Charity committees.
Baby shower invitations.
All wasted.
Claire said, “Why?”
Vivian finally looked directly at her.
“Because Elias Bennett spent years treating my son like hired help.”
“Nathan was stealing.”
“You don’t know when that began.”
“Do you?”
Vivian’s silence answered enough.
Claire leaned forward.
“The foundation’s nine percent. Was that part of the plan?”
Vivian smiled faintly.
“Your father understood power. So do I.”
“You intend to vote me out.”
“I intend to protect a company from a woman who allowed her husband to steal millions under her nose.”
That cut because it was true.
Vivian knew it.
“You think the board will follow you?” Claire asked.
“I think investors prefer competence to sentiment.”
Rebecca interrupted.
“Vivian, did you direct Lorna Pike to notarize Claire’s forged signature?”
“No.”
“Did Nathan?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did you know he was meeting Dr. Avery?”
Vivian’s composure flickered.
Claire saw it.
“Ah.”
Vivian stood.
“This meeting is over.”
Claire blocked the door.
“Not yet.”
“Move.”
“No.”
For several seconds, neither woman yielded.
Then Vivian spoke softly.
“You want revenge because you’re frightened.”
“I want the truth.”
“No. You want someone else to blame because you finally understand your father was right about your husband.”
Claire’s face burned.
Vivian moved closer.
“But if you tear Nathan apart publicly, understand what happens next. Bennett Alpine collapses. Lenders panic. Employees lose jobs. Your father’s legacy becomes a criminal headline.”
“You mean your son becomes one.”
Vivian’s eyes hardened.
“You don’t know what your father did to build that legacy.”
Claire froze.
“What does that mean?”
Vivian smiled.
“Ask Rebecca about Silver Creek.”
Then she left.
Claire turned.
Rebecca had gone pale.
“What is Silver Creek?”
Rebecca hesitated.
That hesitation hurt more than Vivian’s words.
“Rebecca.”
“An old land acquisition.”
“What kind?”
“Complicated.”
“You’ve known me since I was twelve. Don’t lie now.”
Rebecca sat.
“Fourteen years ago, Bennett Alpine acquired eight hundred acres near Silver Creek. Your father planned a resort.”
“And?”
“A local family claimed Elias pressured them into selling.”
“Did he?”
“He used every legal advantage he had.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
Rebecca sighed.
“The family lost their ranch after a loan default. Bennett Alpine bought the debt from the bank and foreclosed.”
Claire felt uneasy.
“Who owned the ranch?”
Rebecca looked at her.
“The Coles.”
Claire stopped.
“Marissa Cole?”
“Her parents.”
The room seemed to tilt.
Marissa had not wandered into Claire’s life by chance.
Her family had lost property to Elias Bennett.
Claire whispered, “Nathan knew.”
“I suspect so.”
“He hired her.”
“Yes.”
The conspiracy suddenly had another motive.
Money.
Revenge.
Nathan’s ambition.
Marissa’s resentment.
Perhaps Vivian’s hatred.
Three people who wanted something from the Bennett family.
Three people Claire had welcomed into her home.
That night Detective Reyes called.
“We got a warrant for Nathan’s cloud storage.”
“What did you find?”
“A folder labeled Silver Creek.”
Claire sat up.
“Documents?”
“And audio.”
“Audio of what?”
“A conversation between Nathan and Marissa from eight months ago.”
Reyes played twelve seconds.
Nathan’s voice:
Claire believes her father was a saint.
Marissa answered:
Then when this is over, she loses the company and the illusion.
Nathan laughed.
May you like
No. First she signs what we need.
Then she loses everything.
