Chapter 13 - The Signatures

The federal interview lasted three hours.

Michael’s attorneys allowed him to answer limited questions.

Every fraudulent wire carried some combination of his credentials, IP access, or electronic approval.

Daniel had built the scheme brilliantly.

Not perfectly.

Brilliantly.

Michael’s carelessness had supplied the gaps.

He reused passwords.

He sometimes approved transactions from home.

He allowed Vanessa access to his office.

He trusted Daniel with emergency payment authority.

The investigators did not need to prove Michael created the fraud to suspect he tolerated it.

When he left the federal building, reporters waited outside.

Someone had leaked the meeting.

“Mr. Reed, did you steal from your niece?”

“Did you authorize Blue Alder?”

“Was your sister investigating fraud before her death?”

Michael said nothing.

At home, Sophie watched the news despite Grace trying to turn it off.

A reporter said:

Sources confirm federal authorities are examining whether Reed participated in a multimillion-dollar wire fraud scheme.

Sophie looked at Michael.

“Did you steal?”

He sat beside her.

“I took money from your trust when I wasn’t supposed to.”

Her face changed.

Michael continued before fear could become imagination.

“I put all of it back with extra money.”

“But you took it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To save the company.”

“Was it yours?”

“No.”

Sophie looked down.

“Then why did you?”

Because adults could dress theft in good intentions.

Michael swallowed.

“Because I thought being scared gave me permission to break a rule.”

“Did it?”

“No.”

Sophie nodded slowly.

That hurt more than a judge.

Priya arrived after dinner with a breakthrough.

She had compared authorization timestamps to Daniel’s travel schedule.

Three transfers bearing Michael’s signature had occurred while Michael was airborne on Reed aircraft without internet access.

“That helps,” Rachel said.

“More than helps.”

Priya opened another file.

“The e-signature certificate was reset eleven minutes before the first fraudulent transfer.”

“By whom?”

“Administrative request from Daniel’s CFO account.”

Michael stared.

“Can he explain it?”

“He’ll say you asked him.”

“Can we prove I didn’t?”

“Maybe.”

Priya showed a security ticket.

The reset request had been approved through a backup email.

Vanessa’s personal email.

Michael sat back.

For the first time, they had a technical chain connecting Daniel and Vanessa to forged authorizations.

But Priya was not smiling.

“There’s a problem.”

“What?”

“Your legitimate transfer from Sophie’s trust used the same reset certificate.”

Michael’s stomach sank.

Daniel had processed Michael’s illegal bridge loan.

Then reused the credentials.

That meant Michael’s own wrongdoing had given Daniel camouflage.

Rachel looked at him.

“Did Daniel suggest using the trust?”

Michael remembered.

The executive conference room.

A cash-flow crisis.

Daniel saying, Laura’s trust is liquid. Six weeks. No one gets hurt.

“Yes.”

Priya whispered, “He set you up early.”

Michael closed his eyes.

Or Daniel had simply recognized weakness and exploited it.

Either way, Michael had stepped willingly into the trap.

That night Vanessa called.

Her voice shook.

“He knows I talked to you.”

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“He sent me a recording.”

“Of what?”

“Me.”

Michael waited.

Vanessa began crying.

“I said something about Laura.”

“What?”

Silence.

“Vanessa.”

She forced out the words.

“I told Daniel that if Laura disappeared, maybe we could finally breathe.”

Michael went cold.

“When?”

“The night before she died.”

His grip tightened on the phone.

“Did you know what he was going to do?”

“No.”

“Did you?”

“No!”

She was sobbing now.

“I meant I wanted her to leave us alone. I wanted her to stop threatening me.”

Michael stared into the dark kitchen.

“Daniel recorded you.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To own me.”

Michael thought of the hotel invoices.

The midnight hangar.

The forged signatures.

Every secret Daniel discovered became collateral.

“He has done this to all of us,” Michael said.

Vanessa stopped crying.

“No.”

Her voice changed.

“He did something worse to Laura.”

Michael’s heart pounded.

“What?”

“I found a message.”

“Where?”

“In his old phone backup.”

“What message?”

May you like

Vanessa whispered:

“‘Brake problem handled.’”
