Chapter 17 - The Boardroom Trap

The boardroom doors locked automatically at six.

Sophia knew Julian noticed.

Two federal agents waited in the reception area.

Detective Quinn stood one floor below with warrants not yet executed.

Tessa sat beside Sophia.

Natalie Greer had entered through a private elevator under a cooperation agreement.

Victor saw her and swore.

Julian remained calm.

“This meeting is adjourned.”

Sophia said, “Sit down.”

He laughed.

“You don’t run this board anymore.”

Tessa slid the restraining order across the table.

“Neither do you.”

The independent directors looked frightened.

Sophia turned to them.

“For five years, fifteen percentage points of my shares were voted under an agreement I signed while my son was missing.”

Victor stood.

“This is privileged family history, not board business.”

Sophia looked at him.

“You used corporate money to finance it.”

That silenced the room.

Tessa displayed Northline transfers.

Eighteen-point-four million dollars.

Shell vendors.

Payments to Cal Rourke.

Three hundred thousand to Patrick Dane.

One hundred thousand to Nora Bell.

Julian shook his head.

“Victor handled Northline.”

Victor stared at him.

“What?”

Julian continued.

“I approved strategic budgets. Victor controlled disbursements.”

Victor’s face reddened.

“You created the company.”

“Prove it.”

Sophia watched the alliance fracture.

Good.

Victor pointed at Julian.

“You told us Leo would be gone forty-eight hours.”

The room froze.

Julian’s face became blank.

Tessa did not move.

Sophia’s heart pounded.

Victor seemed to realize what he had said.

Too late.

One of the directors whispered, “What did you just say?”

Julian turned on Victor.

“Stop talking.”

Victor laughed wildly.

“No. You stop. Five years I covered for you.”

Sophia said softly, “Covered what?”

Julian stared at her.

Victor answered.

“Julian said we needed leverage.”

“Victor.”

“You said Sophia would sign if she was scared.”

Julian slammed his hand on the table.

“Shut up!”

The outburst echoed.

Victor’s breathing was heavy.

Sophia said, “Did you know Leo might not be returned?”

Victor looked at her.

His anger collapsed.

“At first? No.”

Sophia’s voice shook.

“And later?”

Victor looked away.

Julian intervened.

“He is panicking. This is nonsense.”

Natalie spoke.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

She stood slowly.

“I heard them arguing two days after the kidnapping.”

Victor shut his eyes.

Natalie continued.

“Victor wanted Leo returned. Julian said Sophia hadn’t signed.”

Julian laughed.

“You are an admitted fraud participant bargaining for immunity.”

“Yes.”

Natalie met his eyes.

“And I’m still telling the truth.”

Sophia placed a tablet on the table.

The recovered security footage began playing.

Nora.

Leo.

Patrick.

Victor.

Then Julian.

Nobody spoke.

The timestamp glowed beneath them.

2:16:44 PM.

Julian watched his younger self enter the corridor.

His mask finally cracked.

He looked at Sophia.

“You don’t understand what that shows.”

“It shows you were there.”

“I lived in that house.”

“You told police you were at headquarters.”

“That was five years ago.”

“We have your calendar.”

Julian looked toward the doors.

Sophia said, “They’re not locked to keep you in.”

That was technically true.

Fire code would allow exit.

“They’re locked to keep reporters out.”

Victor sat down slowly.

He looked destroyed.

Sophia faced him.

“Why?”

Victor’s eyes filled with something she had never seen in him.

Shame.

“Father gave you everything.”

“He gave you twenty-eight percent of a billion-dollar company.”

“He gave you the deciding vote.”

“So you took my son?”

“I didn’t think—”

“No. Finish that sentence.”

Victor covered his face.

“I didn’t think Julian would let it go that far.”

Sophia laughed in disbelief.

“He was two.”

Victor whispered, “I know.”

“No. You knew five years ago.”

Outside the boardroom, Quinn received confirmation.

The warrants were active.

Inside, Julian stood.

“This performance is finished.”

Sophia watched him button his jacket.

“You’re right.”

The doors opened.

Detective Quinn entered with two federal agents.

“Julian Hart.”

For the first time, Julian looked afraid.

Quinn continued.

“We have a warrant for your arrest.”

Victor stood.

Another agent moved toward him.

“And Victor Laurent.”

Victor did not resist.

Julian did.

Not physically.

With words.

“You’re making a catastrophic mistake.”

Quinn replied, “You can explain that to counsel.”

Julian turned toward Sophia as an agent instructed him to place his hands where they could be seen.

“You think this makes you innocent?”

Sophia stared.

“Innocent of what?”

“Choosing the company over him.”

Sophia’s breath caught.

Julian smiled.

“That’s what Nora believed. That’s what Leo will eventually believe too.”

Then he was taken away.

Victor followed.

The boardroom fell silent.

Sophia looked at the frozen video.

Two-year-old Leo in Nora’s arms.

Her brother behind them.

Her husband approaching.

The conspiracy had finally entered daylight.

But Julian’s last words found the wound he knew best.

Because Sophia still had to answer the one question evidence could not erase.

When Leo learned everything she had signed, would he believe she had fought for him?

Or would he believe she had chosen power?
