Chapter 1 - The Candle Behind Glass

“You are NOT taking that in there!”
Victoria Ellison’s fingers were already tangled in Laura’s hair.
Laura cried out as Michael’s older sister yanked her backward from the glass isolation-room door.
“Let go of me!”
In Laura’s left arm, two-year-old Ben startled awake and began crying.
In her right hand, Laura was trying desperately not to drop a tiny vanilla birthday cupcake with one blue candle pushed into the frosting.
A sealed cream envelope was tucked beneath it.
Rain streaked the tall hospital windows. Monitors glowed behind glass. Nurses moved quickly through the polished corridor of St. Catherine Medical Center’s private infectious-disease wing.
Victoria pulled harder.
“Michael doesn’t need this performance.”
“It’s Ben’s birthday!”
“You’re using that child to manipulate him.”
Laura turned just enough to wrench herself partly free.
That was when Victoria slapped her.
Hard.
Ben screamed.
Laura’s head snapped sideways.
For one second, she could not believe what had happened.
Then rage overpowered shock.
“Don’t you touch me in front of my son!”
Behind the isolation glass, Michael saw everything.
He had been hospitalized four days earlier with severe viral myocarditis following an infection that had nearly stopped his heart. He was no longer in immediate danger, but he remained physically weak and under infection precautions while physicians monitored dangerous rhythm changes.
Pale beneath the hospital lighting, Michael slammed his palm against the door.
“VICTORIA!”
His voice came through the intercom.
Weak.
Furious.
A nurse rushed between the women.
“Mrs. Ellison, step back.”
“I am Mrs. Ellison,” Victoria snapped.
The nurse did not blink.
“So is she.”
Laura would remember that.
Victoria pointed at her anyway.
“She is upsetting a cardiac patient.”
Laura’s hands trembled.
But she lifted the cream envelope.
“This came from Michael’s lawyer.”
For one split second Victoria’s expression changed.
Michael saw it.
“What’s in the envelope?” he demanded.
Victoria lunged.
Laura pulled back.
“Give me that!”
The nurse blocked her.
Laura tore open the envelope.
Inside was a notarized legal document.
Her eyes moved over the first page.
Then stopped.
“Michael changed the emergency guardian nomination.”
Victoria went white.
The document concerned Ben.
Michael and Laura’s estate plan had previously named Victoria as standby guardian if both parents became unavailable at the same time.
More importantly, Victoria had also been named temporary voting trustee over whatever Ellison Biomed shares Ben inherited from Michael.
That was gone.
Michael had replaced Victoria with an independent professional trustee and nominated Laura’s older brother, David Mercer, as Ben’s emergency guardian if Laura herself could not serve.
Victoria stepped forward.
“That document is invalid.”
Michael’s voice came through the intercom.
“No.”
His breathing was visibly harder now.
“I changed it because I found out what you did.”
Silence swallowed the corridor.
Ben quieted just enough to notice his father behind the glass.
“Daddy.”
Michael’s face broke.
Laura brought Ben toward the window.
The little boy pressed his palm against the glass.
Michael matched it from the other side.
Laura placed the cupcake on the narrow ledge outside his door.
The blue candle shook.
Michael gave the faintest smile.
Then, from behind the glass, he leaned forward and pretended to blow it out.
Ben copied him.
For one heartbreaking second, everyone forgot Victoria.
Then Nurse Elena Ramirez looked down at her tablet.
Her expression tightened.
“Laura.”
Laura turned.
“What?”
“Someone accessed Michael’s medical authorization this morning.”
Michael’s eyes sharpened.
Victoria backed up one step.
Elena opened the access log.
“It wasn’t hospital staff.”
Laura looked directly at Victoria.
Michael lifted one trembling hand behind the glass.
“Laura.”
His voice had changed.
Urgent now.
“Check Ben’s birthday card.”
Laura frowned.
The handmade card was tucked beneath Ben’s little raincoat.
She had almost forgotten it.
Blue construction paper.
A crooked paper balloon.
BEN IS 2 written across the front in Laura’s handwriting because Ben could only draw circles.
Michael had insisted she bring it.
Laura opened the card.
Nothing.
Then she remembered his words.
Check it.
She ran one finger beneath the folded backing.
Something had been taped inside.
A tiny brass key fell into her palm.
With it came a narrow strip of paper.
Three lines in Michael’s handwriting.
VAULT 314.
CODE: BEN’S BIRTHDAY.
IF VICTORIA ACTIVATES MY MEDICAL PROXY, OPEN IT BEFORE THE BOARD MEETS.
Laura slowly looked up.
Victoria’s face had lost every trace of color.
“What board meeting?”
Victoria did not answer.
Michael did.
“Tomorrow morning.”
Laura stared through the glass.
“What are they voting on?”
Michael looked toward his sister.
Then back at Laura.
May you like
“My incapacity.”
And suddenly the slap in the hallway was no longer the most frightening thing Victoria had done.
