Chapter 14 - The Woman at the School Gate

Vanessa did not move immediately.

Her job started in six weeks.

Before leaving, she made one mistake.

Or perhaps one necessary choice badly executed.

She went to Ethan’s school.

Not onto campus.

She stood outside the fence at dismissal.

Ethan saw her first.

His body stopped.

Miles nearly walked into him.

“What?”

Ethan pointed.

Vanessa stood across the street holding nothing.

No flowers.

No letter.

No gift.

Just herself.

Ethan’s breathing changed.

Mrs. Alvarez noticed.

“Ethan?”

He stepped backward.

Vanessa saw.

Immediately, she raised both hands and moved farther away.

She did not cross.

Daniel arrived twelve minutes later after the school called him.

He found Vanessa standing near her car.

“What are you doing?”

“I know.”

Her face was pale.

“I know this was wrong.”

“Why are you here?”

“I wanted to see him once before I left.”

“You could have asked.”

“I knew he might say no.”

“That was the point.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Daniel’s anger rose.

“You cannot keep treating his boundaries as obstacles to your feelings.”

“I know.”

“Stop saying you know after you do the opposite.”

That landed.

Vanessa nodded.

“You’re right.”

Daniel expected explanation.

None came.

She got into her car.

Then Ethan called from behind him.

“Wait.”

Daniel turned.

Ethan stood beside Mrs. Alvarez.

He looked terrified.

Vanessa stepped out again but did not move closer.

Ethan approached until twenty feet separated them.

Daniel stayed near.

Vanessa said, “I’m sorry.”

Ethan crossed his arms.

“You said that already.”

“Yes.”

“Why did you come?”

“To see you.”

“I didn’t say you could.”

“I know.”

“That means you’re still doing it.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Daniel watched her accept the blow.

Ethan looked confused.

He had expected defense.

“You’re moving?”

“Yes.”

“Because of me?”

“No.”

“Because of Dad?”

“No.”

She paused.

“Because staying near this family makes it too easy for me to keep wanting things from you that you don’t owe me.”

Ethan stared.

“That sounds weird.”

“It probably is.”

“When are you leaving?”

“Next month.”

Silence.

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“I’ll go.”

Then Ethan asked:

“Did you ever like me?”

The question stopped everyone.

Vanessa’s face broke.

“Yes.”

“You hated Mom.”

“I was jealous of her.”

“She was dead.”

“I know.”

“That’s stupid.”

“Yes.”

“Did you throw away my project because it had her picture?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“Yes.”

Daniel had not known that detail.

The project was about planets.

Ethan had glued a small photograph of Claire and himself at a science museum onto one corner.

Vanessa had thrown it away.

Ethan’s eyes filled.

“She took me there.”

“I know.”

“Why didn’t you just tell Dad you hated the picture?”

“Because saying it out loud would have made me hear how ugly it was.”

The honesty silenced him.

Vanessa took a breath.

“I am sorry I came here.”

Ethan wiped his face.

“Don’t do it again.”

“I won’t.”

“And don’t write me.”

“I won’t.”

“If I want to talk, I’ll tell Dad.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa nodded.

Then she got into the car.

She drove away.

Ethan watched until it disappeared.

Daniel approached.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Want to go home?”

“No.”

“What do you want?”

Ethan thought.

“Milkshake.”

Daniel smiled.

“That I can do.”

In the car, Ethan said:

“She still doesn’t listen the first time.”

“No.”

“But she listened the second.”

“Yes.”

“Does that count?”

Daniel considered.

“It counts as listening the second time.”

Ethan nodded.

Precise.

No exaggeration.

No rewriting.

That became the family’s new way.

Vanessa had violated a boundary.

Then respected it after being corrected.

Both facts could exist.

At home, Ethan took her letter from the drawer.

He added one sentence on the back.

YOU CAME TO SCHOOL WITHOUT ASKING. I TOLD YOU NOT TO AGAIN.

Then beneath it:

YOU LISTENED.

He did not send it.

It was not for Vanessa.

It was for himself.

A record.

But not the kind he had once needed.

Not proof against a lie.

May you like

A way of remembering reality as it actually happened.
