Chapter 16 - The Night Before the Championship

Alexander wanted Olivia withdrawn from the event immediately.
She refused.
“Juniper might have been drugged.”
“Trace contamination.”
“You don’t know that.”
“Neither do you.”
He stared.
“Exactly.”
Olivia paced the veterinary office.
“If I disappear tomorrow, whoever did this wins.”
Alexander’s voice rose.
“This is a horse, Olivia. Not a social-media argument.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
She stopped.
His fear was not controlling this time.
It was reasonable.
Juniper’s health came first.
Dr. Keene repeated that the level detected was extremely low and not clinically dangerous, but competition rules required investigation.
Olivia would not ride unless the second sample cleared.
That was nonnegotiable.
She accepted it.
Reluctantly.
Security reviewed barn cameras.
The locker aisle had been crowded all day.
No obvious intruder.
Then Paige noticed something.
“The note paper.”
“What?”
“It’s from the old administration office.”
Westbridge used distinctive cream memo sheets before rebranding two years earlier.
Most had been discarded.
A box remained in archive storage.
Access logs showed three people entered archives that week.
Camille.
Caroline Mercer.
And Malcolm.
But Malcolm was under court restrictions and had only entered with investigators.
Camille had retrieved payroll records.
Caroline had reviewed finance documents.
Neither looked likely.
Then a fourth access appeared through an old master key.
No electronic record.
The physical door had scratches.
Someone knew the academy.
Olivia thought of former staff.
Former students.
Donor families.
Too many.
At 11:30 p.m., Liam received a text.
Unknown number.
Want proof who dosed Juniper? Barn Six. Come alone.
He showed Olivia immediately.
Good.
No secrets.
They called security.
Instead of going alone, officers set a controlled approach.
Barn Six was dark.
Inside, they found no person.
Only a phone placed on a hay bale.
The screen played a recorded video.
Harper Bell appeared.
She was crying.
The video looked recent.
“I know who did it.”
Olivia stared.
Harper continued.
“My father told me not to say anything.”
Then the recording ended.
Olivia’s heart tightened.
Police contacted Harper’s attorney.
Harper was safe at home.
She admitted recording the video earlier that day.
Why?
“Someone messaged me and said they had proof I drugged Juniper unless I made a confession video.”
Olivia frowned.
“Did you drug her?”
“No.”
“Why record anything?”
“I panicked.”
The anonymous sender told Harper to say she knew who did it.
Not confess personally.
Then instructed her to upload the clip to a link.
It had been used to bait Olivia to Barn Six.
For what?
Security searched.
Behind a stall door, they found a small bag containing prohibited medication and a piece of Olivia’s riding glove.
Another frame attempt.
But because Olivia did not come alone, the setup failed.
Who knew Liam would show her the message?
Someone assumed old patterns.
Secrets.
Isolation.
Fear.
The opposite of what Westbridge students had begun learning.
Investigators traced the anonymous messaging account through a mistake.
One login occurred without VPN protection.
IP address:
Vale Capital guest network.
Victoria was under strict legal scrutiny and likely not personally operating anything.
But her company still housed loyal employees.
Police identified a junior communications executive named Brent Mason.
He had worked directly for Victoria.
When questioned, he panicked.
He admitted targeting Olivia.
Why?
“Mrs. Vale never told me to.”
“Then why?”
“I wanted to help.”
“Help how?”
“Her case. Her reputation.”
He had convinced himself framing Olivia would show the Reeds were hypocrites and weaken witnesses.
He also feared Vale Capital would collapse.
No direct order.
No grand conspiracy.
Just a subordinate imitating the culture above him.
Olivia found that almost more frightening.
Victoria had created people who acted without instruction because they knew what outcome she wanted.
Brent admitted contaminating Juniper’s supplement container using medication obtained from a private barn.
The amount was deliberately small.
“I didn’t want to hurt the horse.”
Olivia stared when investigators told her.
That sentence again.
Small harm rationalized.
Enough to create suspicion.
Not enough, supposedly, to count.
Brent was arrested.
Juniper’s second sample was clean after the contaminated feed was removed, but event rules still barred Olivia from competing due the initial positive.
She was devastated.
“I did everything right.”
Dr. Keene nodded.
“Yes.”
“And I still lose.”
“Yes.”
Olivia looked at him.
“That’s terrible.”
“It is.”
For once, no reversal repaired the consequence.
Truth did not restore tomorrow’s ride.
That lesson hurt.
The championship morning arrived under bright Texas sun.
Olivia dressed anyway.
Plain navy hoodie.
Faded jeans.
Old boots.
The same style she wore the day of the bucket.
Liam found her near the warm-up ring.
“You’re not riding.”
“I know.”
“Why dressed?”
“I’m still part of the team.”
Sienna approached.
She looked nervous.
“I changed my mind.”
“About what?”
“I’m riding.”
Olivia stared.
Sienna had withdrawn from competition.
“Why?”
“Westbridge needs entries.”
“That’s not enough.”
“No.”
Sienna looked toward Monarch.
“I also need to learn whether I can enter an arena without making winning the only thing that matters.”
Olivia smiled faintly.
“Good luck.”
Sienna nodded.
Then Victoria Vale arrived.
Despite pending charges and board restrictions, she was legally permitted to attend the public event.
Security watched her closely.
She walked directly toward Sienna.
“You are not riding.”
Sienna froze.
Victoria continued.
“You will come with me.”
“No.”
“Do not embarrass me again.”
Thousands of spectators filled the grounds.
Media watched.
The final confrontation had arrived in daylight.
No private office.
No hidden phone.
No closed boardroom.
Victoria reached for Sienna.
Olivia stepped between them.
Victoria stared.
“Move.”
Olivia answered:
“No.”
Alexander approached from one side.
Police investigators from another.
And Sienna, shaking behind Olivia, finally said:
“Mom, tell them about the check to Malcolm.”
Victoria’s face changed.
May you like
Every camera turned toward her.
