Chapter 14 - The Father Who Made It Worse

Daniel wanted Vanessa arrested immediately.

AUSA Lin refused to discuss timing.

“We charge when the evidence package is ready.”

“You have messages.”

“Yes.”

“Money transfers.”

“Yes.”

“The necklace video.”

“State matter, primarily.”

“Witness intimidation.”

“Under investigation.”

“What are you waiting for?”

“A case that survives your anger.”

Daniel hated her.

Temporarily.

He knew she was right.

His inability to tolerate delay had already caused damage.

Sophie’s viral humiliation had become international tabloid material largely because Daniel posted the footage.

At Hawthorne, students now treated her either as a celebrity victim or someone fragile.

Both made her miserable.

She began eating lunch in Ms. Carter’s office.

Daniel learned this from Caroline.

Not Sophie.

That hurt.

He asked permission before visiting school.

Hawthorne allowed it after he signed a media and confidentiality agreement.

He found Sophie in Ms. Carter’s office eating soup.

“Can I sit?”

She shrugged.

He sat.

For a minute neither spoke.

Then Daniel said:

“I made the cafeteria bigger.”

Sophie looked at him.

“I thought defending you publicly would undo what Vanessa did publicly.”

“It didn’t.”

“No.”

“It made everyone watch it again.”

“Yes.”

Daniel swallowed.

“I’m sorry.”

Sophie stirred her soup.

“You keep saying sorry.”

“I know.”

“When does that fix things?”

“It doesn’t.”

She looked up.

“That’s a bad answer.”

“It’s the only true one.”

He explained that apologies were obligations, not repairs.

Repair took behavior.

Time.

Listening.

Sophie considered.

“Ms. Carter says that too.”

Daniel smiled.

“I’m starting to think Ms. Carter should run my company.”

From the doorway Ms. Carter said, “Absolutely not.”

Sophie laughed.

A small victory.

Then the school administrator became serious.

“There is an issue.”

She showed Daniel updated forensic analysis of Hawthorne’s hallway video.

The timestamp had indeed been offset by seven minutes due to maintenance.

Vanessa’s lawyers were using that fact.

But the image itself had not been manipulated.

More importantly, visitor-access records showed Vanessa’s badge opening the locker corridor door at the exact corrected time.

Her phone location matched.

The student witness matched.

The video was solid.

Daniel exhaled.

“Then we’re done.”

Ms. Carter shook her head.

“Legally perhaps. Socially, people believe whatever version reaches them first.”

Sophie stared at her soup.

That was the injury cameras could not reverse.

Then Ms. Carter added:

“We found another recording.”

A camera outside the faculty entrance.

It showed Vanessa entering Hawthorne thirty-four minutes before she claimed she arrived because the school called.

Daniel frowned.

“What call?”

“There was no call.”

The school never summoned her.

Vanessa had lied about why she was there.

She arrived intentionally.

Waited.

Located Sophie’s backpack.

Planted the necklace.

Then entered the cafeteria at the busiest possible moment.

The humiliation was staged from beginning to end.

Ms. Carter had also found Vanessa’s visitor application.

Purpose of visit:

Drop off Sophie’s forgotten medication.

Sophie took no medication.

Vanessa invented a reason to access campus.

Daniel forwarded everything through counsel.

That afternoon he made another mistake—not explosive, but costly.

He drove to Vanessa’s apartment.

He did not enter.

He stood across the street.

For ten minutes.

He wanted to confront her.

Security cameras captured him.

Vanessa saw him from the window.

Her attorney immediately filed for an emergency protective order claiming Daniel was stalking and intimidating her.

Daniel stared at Evelyn in disbelief.

“I never left the sidewalk.”

“Why were you there?”

“I wanted answers.”

“You have lawyers.”

“I wanted to look at her.”

Evelyn slammed her pen down.

“Stop behaving like your emotions create exceptions.”

Daniel went silent.

The court issued a temporary no-contact order pending hearing.

It did not affect Sophie.

But tabloids reported:

WHITMORE CEO ORDERED TO STAY AWAY FROM ESTRANGED WIFE.

The board restricted Daniel’s public role further.

Henry used it to argue instability.

Sophie saw the headline.

Her message to Daniel contained only five words.

Why would you go there?

He called.

She did not answer.

His mistake cost him more trust.

That night Daniel sat alone at Oakridge.

Then the alarm sounded.

Rachel’s study window had been broken.

Security arrived within minutes.

Nothing obvious was missing.

Except one thing.

Rachel’s original wooden jewelry box.

The place Sophie had found the red flash drive.

Whoever entered no longer needed the drive.

They wanted something else Rachel had hidden.

And on the study floor beneath the broken window, police found a cuff link.

Silver.

Engraved with the initials H.S.

May you like

Henry Sloan.
