Chapter 4 - The Man Who Knew the Cameras

Detective Blake did not dismiss the threat.
He took Claire’s phone, requested carrier records, and assigned a patrol unit to the Hale estate overnight.
Richard hired additional private security.
Claire trusted none of them.
Lucas Pike had hired most of the estate guards.
And Lucas was still missing.
At 2:00 a.m., Claire found Emma awake.
The little girl sat beside the window with Rosie.
“Can’t sleep?”
Emma shook her head.
“Did Mommy know the roof would fall?”
“No.”
“Then why did she send you?”
Claire sat beside her.
“Because she loved you enough to make plans for things she was afraid might happen.”
Emma considered that.
“Daddy says Mommy worried too much.”
Claire’s chest tightened.
“Your mother was very smart.”
“Daddy loved her.”
“I know.”
Emma stared at Rosie.
“Then why did he make her cry?”
Claire went still.
“When?”
“Before she died.”
“What happened?”
“I was supposed to be sleeping.”
Emma’s fingers worked anxiously through the doll’s yarn hair.
“Mommy said, ‘How long?’ Daddy said, ‘It didn’t mean anything.’ Then Mommy threw his phone.”
Claire felt dread rising.
“Did she say who they were talking about?”
Emma whispered, “Vanessa.”
The betrayal landed with brutal clarity.
Daniel and Vanessa.
Claire did not sleep.
At breakfast she confronted him in the library.
“Were you having an affair with Vanessa?”
Daniel’s coffee cup stopped halfway to his mouth.
That was answer enough.
“Oh my God.”
“Claire—”
“How long?”
“It was over before Olivia died.”
“How long?”
“Four months.”
Claire stared at him with disgust.
“My best friend thought Vanessa was stealing from her family while her husband was sleeping with her.”
“I made a mistake.”
“A mistake is missing an anniversary.”
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“I ended it.”
“Did Olivia know?”
“Yes.”
“Did Richard?”
“No.”
A sound came from the doorway.
Richard stood there.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Richard walked inside.
“How long?”
“Dad—”
“Don’t call me that.”
Daniel stood.
Richard struck him.
The slap echoed through the library.
Claire had never seen Richard hit anyone.
Daniel did not retaliate.
Richard’s voice shook.
“My daughter was terrified. You knew she was terrified. And you were sleeping with my wife?”
“It was over.”
“You let me bury Olivia without knowing.”
“I was ashamed.”
“No. You were protecting yourself.”
Richard looked ready to strike him again.
Claire stepped between them.
“This doesn’t explain the canopy.”
“No,” Richard said. “But it explains why Vanessa believed she could control him.”
Daniel flinched.
Claire noticed.
“What does she have on you besides the affair?”
“Nothing.”
Richard laughed without humor.
“Wrong answer.”
Daniel walked away.
Richard followed.
“Daniel.”
Nothing.
“Daniel!”
Finally he turned.
“I borrowed money.”
Claire stared.
“How much?”
“Six and a half million.”
Richard’s face emptied.
“From whom?”
“A private lender.”
“Name.”
“Northstar Holdings.”
Richard gripped the back of a chair.
Claire had never heard of it.
Richard clearly had.
“Northstar bought distressed Hale debt after the 2023 Memphis project.”
Daniel nodded.
“What did you pledge?”
Silence.
Richard’s voice became almost inaudible.
“What did you pledge?”
“My contingent rights.”
“To what?”
Daniel looked at Claire.
“Olivia’s shares.”
Richard lunged.
Claire caught his arm.
“You pledged shares you don’t own?”
“Only if Emma dies before twenty-five.”
The room fell silent.
Claire felt sick.
Olivia’s Hale Meridian shares were held in trust for Emma.
If Emma died before the trust terminated, the remainder passed to Daniel under Olivia’s older estate plan.
Daniel had borrowed against that contingent interest.
Richard whispered, “Who controls Northstar?”
“I don’t know.”
“Find out.”
Maya arrived an hour later with corporate records.
Northstar Holdings LLC had been formed in Delaware.
Its manager was another LLC.
That entity traced to a Nashville attorney.
Nathan Cole.
Vanessa’s lawyer.
Richard stared at the documents.
“She owns Daniel’s debt.”
Maya nodded.
“If Northstar acquired his loan.”
Daniel went pale.
“She told me the lender was independent.”
“You believed your mistress?” Richard asked.
“I didn’t know she had anything to do with it.”
Claire saw the conspiracy taking shape.
If Emma died, Daniel inherited Olivia’s shares.
Northstar could enforce against Daniel’s interest.
Vanessa could gain control of a block worth tens of millions.
Money.
Power.
And Emma in the middle.
Detective Blake entered carrying a tablet.
“We found Lucas Pike’s SUV.”
“Where?” Claire asked.
“Long-term parking at Nashville International Airport.”
“Did he fly out?”
“No.”
Blake turned the tablet.
A security image showed Lucas leaving the garage on foot.
Then getting into a dark sedan.
“Whose car?”
“We ran the plate.”
Blake looked at Richard.
“It belongs to Grant Mercer.”
Richard’s nephew.
Hale Meridian’s chief financial officer.
And the man Olivia had suspected of moving money.
Richard whispered, “Grant.”
Blake nodded.
“Your family just got a lot more complicated.”
Then Claire’s phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
One photograph.
Emma sleeping in her bedroom.
Taken less than five minutes earlier.
