Chapter 14 - Leo’s Mistake Became Evidence

Mateo found Leo sitting on the apartment stairs that evening.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Good answer.”

Leo looked up.

“Mr. Kent lost?”

“For today.”

“That means Bradley wins.”

“No.”

“It keeps happening.”

Mateo sat beside him.

“That’s what power looks like when you watch it close up.”

“What?”

“Not winning forever. Making everyone else survive one more day.”

Leo thought about that.

“I hate him.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

Leo stared.

Mateo rarely admitted hatred.

“Does that make you bad?”

“No.”

“What you do with it decides that.”

Leo’s phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time from Emma.

DO NOT POST ANYTHING ELSE.

Leo sighed.

Mateo raised an eyebrow.

“She knows you.”

At Harbor Point, Emma met Susan and Agent Brooks in a borrowed conference room off-site.

Forensic analysis of the server had recovered deleted metadata.

Someone had used Emma’s credentials.

But the remote connection originated from the Aurelia’s onboard network.

More specifically, from a device assigned to Jonah Vale.

“Enough to arrest him?” Emma asked.

“Not yet,” Brooks said. “Enough to interview.”

Jonah’s attorney refused.

Then the public video Leo had posted produced an unexpected break.

An amateur sailing enthusiast contacted Emma.

He had been filming the marina sunset that evening from across the channel.

His footage captured Charles’s yacht from a different angle.

Federal agents obtained the original file.

There it was.

Greg approaching the briefcase.

But twenty seconds before he threw it overboard, someone stood beside him.

Bradley.

The audio was too distant.

The image was not.

Bradley leaned toward Greg.

Pointed at the case.

Walked away.

Greg picked it up.

Threw it into the water.

Emma stared at the screen.

“Leo’s post made the witness realize what he had.”

Brooks nodded.

“Your boy made a bad evidence decision that accidentally generated better evidence.”

Mateo smiled.

“I am never telling him that.”

“Good.”

The witness also had footage of Jonah leaving the yacht with the sealed tube two days later.

That strengthened the warrant application for the Aurelia.

By midnight, federal agents had judicial authorization to search specific onboard storage areas and electronic devices connected to suspected obstruction and fraud.

Bradley’s lawyers fought immediately.

They lost.

At 5:10 a.m., agents boarded the Aurelia.

The master safe was empty.

The watertight tube was not found.

But hidden inside a navigation-chart compartment was a backup phone.

Messages linked Bradley directly to Greg.

One read:

CASE GOES WATER. KID WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THERE.

Another:

GET C2 FROM HALE. DESTROY IT.

Another:

IF MATEO TALKS, USE THE OLD FILE.

Then the darkest:

THE BOY IS MAKING NOISE. PUT HIS FATHER SOMEWHERE NOBODY BELIEVES HIM.

Agent Brooks read the message twice.

Mateo felt his stomach twist.

“What does that mean?”

“We don’t know.”

Leo whispered, “They were going to frame you again.”

Nobody contradicted him.

Bradley’s attorneys claimed the phone could have been planted.

The device was being forensically analyzed.

The acquisition vote remained scheduled for nine.

At 8:12, Harbor Point’s board assembled.

At 8:31, federal prosecutors asked them to delay any sale involving Harbor Crown.

At 8:42, Bradley’s attorney argued there was no court order preventing the transaction.

At 8:55, the board refused to postpone.

Emma stood outside the meeting room with Mateo.

Charles arrived without his CEO security detail.

Just Susan.

He looked smaller without the machinery of power around him.

But calmer.

At 8:58, Olivia stepped from the elevator.

She carried a red legal folder.

“What’s that?” Charles asked.

“Divorce papers.”

“You filed already.”

“These are different.”

She looked through the glass at Bradley.

“I froze every marital account I could legally reach.”

Bradley saw her.

His face changed.

Then Agent Brooks’s phone rang.

She answered.

Listened.

“Where?”

Her expression hardened.

She looked at Charles.

“Greg Pritchard wants to cooperate now.”

“When?”

“Immediately.”

“Why?”

Brooks ended the call.

“Because someone tried to arrange his transfer into a detention unit holding three men he testified against in a previous state case.”

Mateo went cold.

Bradley’s message echoed:

Put his father somewhere nobody believes him.

This was no longer financial intimidation.

Someone was manipulating custody, evidence, and institutional power.

May you like

Agent Brooks turned toward the boardroom.

“We’re done waiting.”
