Chapter 4 - Olivia Recognized the Signature

By morning, Harbor Point Marina had become a fortress of whispers.
Owners complained about security.
Employees traded rumors.
Bradley’s friends insisted Charles Kent had suffered some kind of paranoid episode.
Someone had already leaked a version of the story to a financial gossip website.
BILLIONAIRE ACCUSES SON-IN-LAW AFTER CHILD STEALS DOCUMENT FROM YACHT.
Leo read the headline on Mateo’s phone.
“I didn’t steal anything.”
“I know.”
“They called me a thief.”
Mateo locked the phone.
“Don’t read it.”
“That doesn’t make it disappear.”
“No.”
Mateo looked exhausted.
“It just stops them from renting space in your head.”
At eleven, Olivia Sterling entered Emma’s conference room with Bradley.
Charles was already there.
So were Susan Hale, Detective Walsh, and two trust attorneys.
Bradley sat beside his wife.
Olivia moved her chair six inches away from him.
Charles placed the recovered page in a clear protective sleeve.
“Is this your husband’s signature?”
Olivia stared at it.
“Yes.”
Bradley leaned back.
“You cannot authenticate a signature by having my wife look at it.”
Susan said, “We also have the notarized original in our document management system.”
Bradley’s face tightened.
Charles looked at Olivia.
“Did you revoke his authority?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“February.”
“Why?”
Olivia hesitated.
Bradley turned toward her.
“You don’t have to answer.”
She looked at him.
“I wasn’t asking your permission.”
Then she faced her father.
“Because Bradley made an investment from one of my accounts without telling me.”
Charles went still.
“How much?”
“Three-point-five million.”
“When?”
“Four years ago.”
Bradley said, “It was a bridge loan.”
Charles ignored him.
“You knew?”
Olivia’s eyes dropped.
“I found out afterward.”
“And you didn’t tell me.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I covered it.”
Charles’s anger shifted.
“You what?”
Olivia swallowed.
“I signed a retroactive authorization.”
Bradley looked almost pleased.
There it was.
His shield.
Olivia had helped him once.
Now anything that came later could be framed as a continuation.
Charles stood.
“You concealed an unauthorized transfer from the family trust?”
“I was trying to protect my marriage.”
“You were protecting him.”
“I thought those were the same thing.”
The sentence silenced the room.
Bradley’s face hardened.
Olivia looked at him.
“They aren’t.”
He leaned toward her.
“Careful.”
Emma saw Olivia flinch.
Not visibly enough for most people.
But enough.
Charles saw it too.
“What does that mean?”
Bradley stood.
“This meeting is over.”
Susan said, “Sit down.”
He laughed.
“You work for Charles.”
“I represent the trust.”
“Same difference.”
“Not legally.”
Olivia reached for the page.
Susan slid it closer without letting her touch the sleeve.
Olivia studied the language.
“I remember this.”
Bradley’s eyes shifted.
Olivia continued.
“You signed it in Susan’s office.”
“I signed a stack of documents.”
“You argued about this one.”
Bradley said nothing.
“You said I was humiliating you.”
Charles whispered, “So he knew.”
Olivia nodded.
Bradley stood.
“You are confused.”
Her eyes went cold.
“No.”
“Olivia.”
“No.”
She stared at him.
“I remember because you refused to use the black pen Susan gave you. You used your own silver fountain pen.”
Susan’s eyes widened slightly.
The original signature was silver-blue ink.
Bradley’s face changed.
For a moment, his control slipped completely.
Then Emma’s phone buzzed.
An emergency message from Harbor Point’s general manager.
She read it twice.
“What?” Mateo asked from beside the wall.
Emma looked at him.
“I’m sorry.”
Mateo already knew.
“Say it.”
“Effective immediately, you are suspended pending investigation of falsified safety certifications and alleged unauthorized access to restricted fuel facilities.”
Leo stood.
“You can’t do that.”
Emma looked furious.
“I didn’t.”
Bradley slowly sat again.
That tiny smile returned.
Charles looked at him.
“You arranged this.”
Bradley spread his hands.
“Maybe the marina finally noticed its maintenance staff has integrity problems.”
Mateo stepped toward him.
Detective Walsh moved between them.
Bradley remained seated.
Protected.
Calm.
Powerful again.
Leo hated him for it.
Then Olivia’s phone lit up on the table.
For a fraction of a second, Leo saw the screen.
A message from a contact saved only as B.
Do not mention Boston.
Olivia grabbed the phone.
Too late.
Leo had seen it.
He looked at her.
She looked back.
And in her eyes, Leo saw the same fear he had seen in Bradley’s.

There was another secret.
And this one belonged to Charles Kent’s daughter.
