Chapter 14 - The House Without Witnesses

Police located Lucas’s car in Connecticut.
Empty.
No obvious sign of violence.
No accident.
Rachel was careful.
“Do not turn this into a mystery novel. He may simply be hiding.”
Daniel almost smiled.
“I wasn’t.”
“You were.”
Investigators froze accounts connected to the attempted transfer.
Meanwhile, Vanessa requested supervised access to the Harrison estate to collect belongings.
The court approved.
Martha went with the inventory officer.
While Vanessa packed, Martha noticed her repeatedly looking toward the old study.
“You’re waiting for something,” Martha said.
Vanessa stiffened.
“You’ve become very confident.”
“I became tired of being afraid.”
Vanessa laughed without humor.
“You think Daniel sees you as family now?”
“I don’t need him to.”
That answer landed.
Vanessa looked away.
Then a drawer slammed upstairs.
Martha followed.
Vanessa stood beside Rebecca’s old desk.
In her hand was a tiny flash drive.
The inventory officer stepped forward.
“That item needs to be logged.”
Vanessa froze.
“What is it?” Martha asked.
“Nothing.”
The officer held out his hand.
Vanessa surrendered it.
Police examined it later.
The drive contained photographs of Daniel’s passport, signatures, financial-account screens and trust documents.
Vanessa claimed Lucas created it.
Metadata showed some files were photographed from her phone.
Rachel confronted her.
“You were building your own leverage.”
Vanessa did not deny it.
“Lucas taught me never to trust anyone.”
“Including him.”
“Especially him.”
Among the files was a photograph of a storage locker receipt.
Different from the safe-deposit box.
Investigators searched the location.
They found boxes containing hard-copy invoices, fake psychological assessments for Ella and a laptop.
The laptop belonged to Lucas.
It included draft documents for a new family trust amendment.
Daniel’s electronic signature had been inserted.
Not yet submitted.
Vanessa’s signature was already real.
Under the proposed terms, Vanessa and Lucas would serve as trust advisers with power to recommend distributions.
If Daniel died or became incapacitated, Vanessa would receive temporary authority over the residence and household-care funds.
It was not a miraculous inheritance.
It was a carefully designed administrative foothold.
Small enough to appear reasonable.
Powerful enough to exploit.
Rachel pointed to one clause.
“If Ella were placed in residential treatment, household-care expenses could still be paid.”
Daniel understood.
“Even though she wasn’t living at home.”
“Yes.”
“Meaning Vanessa could remain in the house using Ella’s trust to support certain expenses.”
“Potentially, if the amendment had been executed and approved.”
Daniel’s stomach turned.
Ella was not simply being removed because she witnessed the affair.
Her absence made the financial structure cleaner.
That evening Vanessa asked to meet again.
Rachel attended.
Vanessa looked worse each time Daniel saw her.
“Lucas contacted me.”
Everyone became still.
“When?”
“How?”
“Encrypted app.”
“What did he want?”
“The password to an old cloud archive.”
“Did you give it?”
“No.”
“Why does he need it?”
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“It contains the complete house-camera backup.”
Daniel stared.
“The deleted footage?”
“Yes.”
“Why do you have the password?”
“Because Lucas gave it to me.”
Rachel asked, “What’s on the backup that frightens him?”
Vanessa’s hands shook.
“I don’t know.”
“Then why is he risking contact?”
“Because something is there.”
Investigators arranged for Vanessa to respond under supervision.
She told Lucas she would trade the password for money and a way out.
His answer came quickly.
Tomorrow. 10 p.m. Harrison house. Come alone.
Rachel shook her head.
“He knows the property is restricted.”
Vanessa whispered, “That is why he chose it. He thinks nobody is living there.”
Daniel felt the tension settle into certainty.
The final confrontation was approaching.
Not because anyone wanted it.
May you like
Because all the lies had narrowed the remaining choices to one place.
The house where they began.
