Chapter 7 - The Board Turns

Daniel made another mistake.

He went to Harrison Development headquarters.

Rachel told him not to.

He went anyway.

The forty-two-story office tower in Manhattan had his name on the lobby directory.

That morning, his security badge did not open the executive floor.

Daniel stared at the red light.

A guard approached.

“Mr. Harrison…”

“You have got to be kidding.”

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel called the board chair, Evelyn Shaw.

She answered.

“You were told your system access was temporarily suspended.”

“I founded this company.”

“And the company has governance procedures.”

“Lucas is stealing.”

“Then let the audit prove it.”

Daniel looked through the glass doors toward the elevators.

“He’s still inside.”

“So are external auditors.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You trust him?”

“No.”

“Then why am I locked out?”

“Because some questionable payments bear your real signature.”

That silenced him.

Evelyn continued.

“Daniel, you built an organization where people were afraid to interrupt you with details.”

His jaw tightened.

“That’s not fair.”

“It’s completely fair.”

He leaned against the wall.

“You approve twenty-page funding packages in forty seconds. You bragged about it.”

Daniel remembered doing exactly that.

Evelyn’s voice softened.

“You hired smart people, then confused delegation with supervision.”

He had no answer.

“I’m trying to protect the company from Lucas,” she continued. “I also have to protect it from you.”

The call ended.

Daniel stood in his own lobby unable to enter.

Power reversal had a physical shape.

A locked glass door.

Lucas appeared on the other side.

He approached slowly.

The door opened from inside.

“Daniel.”

“You planned this.”

Lucas smiled faintly.

“No. I used what you gave me.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“I trusted you.”

“That was your decision.”

“Did you ever love Vanessa?”

Lucas’s expression flickered.

“Does it matter?”

“To her, probably.”

“You always think everyone’s emotions revolve around you.”

Daniel wanted to hit him.

That knowledge frightened him.

He stepped backward instead.

Lucas noticed.

“Learning restraint?”

Daniel said nothing.

“Good. The bathroom video was ugly.”

“The full one is uglier for Vanessa.”

“Maybe.”

Lucas adjusted his cuff.

“But you still struck her.”

“Yes.”

That answer seemed to disappoint him.

Daniel was no longer defending it.

Lucas continued.

“Do you know why Vanessa chose me?”

Daniel almost laughed.

“You think that hurts?”

“It should.”

“It did yesterday.”

Lucas’s smile faded slightly.

Daniel looked at him.

“Today I’m more interested in where you put Ella’s money.”

Security officers watched nearby.

Lucas leaned closer.

“Prove there was money to steal.”

Then he walked away.

Rachel was furious when Daniel returned home.

“You went.”

“Yes.”

“You confronted him.”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell him anything new?”

“No.”

“Miracle.”

Daniel accepted the insult.

The forensic accountants found something by evening.

Bright Haven had transferred hundreds of thousands of dollars into a company called LBC Advisory.

LBC was owned by Lucas.

Another stream went to VHM Interiors.

Owned by Vanessa.

But nearly three million dollars moved elsewhere.

A Cayman-linked investment vehicle.

Rachel pointed to the transfer dates.

“All occurred after large Harrison Development acquisitions.”

Daniel frowned.

“Corporate transactions.”

“Yes.”

“What does Bright Haven have to do with acquisitions?”

“Maybe nothing.”

Daniel understood.

“Kickbacks.”

“Possibly.”

Lucas had used the family fraud as one channel inside a larger corporate scheme.

If true, the conspiracy predated Vanessa.

Maybe even their marriage.

Rachel opened another file.

“Vanessa and Lucas claimed they met through you.”

“They did.”

“No.”

She showed Daniel an old photograph retrieved from a charity archive.

Five years before Daniel met Vanessa.

A fundraising gala in Miami.

Vanessa stood beside Lucas.

His arm was around her waist.

Daniel stared.

“They knew each other.”

“Long before you.”

A second photograph showed them at another event.

Then another.

Daniel felt strangely calm.

The marriage had not become corrupted.

It may have begun as part of the plan.

Martha entered.

“Sir?”

Daniel looked up.

“Miss Ella found something.”

Ella stood behind her holding Rebecca’s old jewelry box.

Inside, beneath the velvet tray, was a folded piece of paper.

Daniel recognized Rebecca’s handwriting.

For Daniel, if someone ever makes Ella feel like a burden in her own home.

His hands trembled as he unfolded it.

The letter had been written during Rebecca’s final illness.

The last line read:

Promise me you will never love peace so much that you ignore what it costs her.

Daniel sat down.

Vanessa had not simply betrayed Rebecca’s trust documents.

Daniel had betrayed Rebecca’s warning by choosing the easiest explanation every time Ella showed him something was wrong.

And for the first time, defeating Vanessa no longer felt like enough.

He would have to change too.
