Chapter 13 - Under Oath

Ethan wore the same expression in court that he had worn on the train.

Controlled.

Reasonable.

Almost offended by everyone else’s emotion.

Rachel’s trust litigator questioned him.

“Did Daniel Hawthorne sign an amendment removing you as trustee?”

“I saw a draft.”

“That was not my question.”

Ethan hesitated.

“I later learned he had signed something.”

“When?”

“After his death.”

Melissa Grant’s testimony had already contradicted him.

The lawyer continued.

“Did Ms. Grant give you the original?”

“I don’t recall.”

Claire watched his fingers.

He rubbed his thumb against the side of his silver watch.

The same watch Maya had recorded.

A small habit.

Fear disguised as irritation.

“Did you pay Ms. Grant four hundred eighty thousand dollars?”

“For consulting services.”

“What services?”

“Administrative transition.”

“After she left Hawthorne Capital?”

“Yes.”

“Did those services include remaining silent about the trust amendment?”

“No.”

Then prosecutors’ forensic evidence from Ethan’s seized laptop surfaced.

A deleted email to Melissa:

Keep the amendment out of the administrator’s file until I resolve the family issue.

Ethan’s face changed.

Only slightly.

Enough.

The court took a recess.

Claire stood outside near the windows.

Victoria approached with her lawyer.

“You look like Daniel.”

Claire turned.

“When you’re fighting.”

“Please don’t.”

Victoria nodded.

They stood in silence.

Then Victoria said, “I believed Ethan because he said Daniel had changed his mind.”

“About what?”

“The trust.”

“He didn’t.”

“I know that now.”

Claire stared at her.

“Would it have mattered?”

Victoria’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“Before or after you drugged Noah?”

Victoria looked away.

Claire regretted the cruelty only slightly.

She was still angry.

She had a right to anger.

The challenge was not letting anger make decisions for her.

Back inside, the judge questioned Ethan directly.

“Why did you withhold a document signed by the settlor?”

“Legal review.”

“For eighteen months?”

“I was dealing with his unexpected death.”

“Then why was the document not disclosed during probate?”

Ethan had no good answer.

The judge did not immediately declare the amendment effective.

Instead, she found sufficient evidence of fiduciary misconduct to suspend Ethan from all trust authority pending final determination.

North Coast Trust Company was appointed interim co-trustee.

Claire nearly cried.

Ethan had finally lost access to Noah’s trust.

Outside court, reporters surrounded him.

He said nothing.

Then prosecutors approached.

He was served with additional process related to the child-transport and medication investigation.

Claire watched from a distance.

No satisfaction came.

Only exhaustion.

Then the setback arrived.

Hawthorne Capital’s lenders rejected one component of Northstar’s financing.

The company still faced a $110 million gap.

Evelyn called Claire.

“We need an asset sale.”

“What assets?”

“The freight-logistics subsidiary.”

Daniel had built it from nothing.

It employed eight hundred people.

Claire closed her eyes.

“Would jobs survive?”

“Buyer says yes, but no guarantee.”

Claire realized truth had not rescued them from Daniel’s debt.

No villain caused that part.

No conspiracy.

Just business choices.

The company needed money.

She authorized negotiations.

Victoria called it betrayal.

“You’re selling Daniel’s work.”

“I’m paying Daniel’s bills.”

“He would never sell logistics.”

“He also wrote that he’d rather change control than sacrifice Noah.”

“You keep using one letter to rewrite my son.”

Claire’s voice hardened.

“No. I’m finally letting him be complicated.”

Daniel loved the company.

Daniel overleveraged it.

Daniel trusted Ethan.

Daniel discovered the mistake.

Daniel tried to fix it.

All were true.

Claire refused to make him saint or villain.

That night, someone leaked a story claiming Claire planned to dismantle Hawthorne Capital and leave New York with Noah.

The old narrative returned.

Unstable widow.

Selling legacy.

Taking heir away.

Grant Vale denied involvement.

Ethan’s access was restricted.

Claire knew Victoria still had contacts.

When Claire confronted her, Victoria said, “Not me.”

For once Claire believed her.

Then who?

Rachel traced the leak.

It came from Meridian Crest.

Harrison Pike had not won the financing.

So he was attacking the company’s stability to drive down valuation.

A new enemy had stepped into the space Ethan created.

May you like

Power did not disappear.

It changed hands.
