Chapter 2 - The Man in the Hall

The sleeper door opened three inches.

Claire shoved it closed.

A hand struck the other side.

“Claire.”

She froze.

She knew the voice.

Ethan Cole.

Her late husband’s closest friend.

For twelve years, Ethan had been almost family.

He had stood beside Claire at Daniel Hawthorne’s funeral eighteen months earlier.

He had carried Noah out of the church when the boy began crying.

He was also general counsel of Hawthorne Capital.

And one of the men Claire trusted with every important legal document involving her son.

“Claire, open the door.”

She stared at Victoria.

Victoria looked away.

“You knew?”

“Open it,” Ethan repeated.

Claire turned the lock.

“No.”

His tone changed.

“We need to talk.”

“You were supposed to leave this train with Noah?”

Silence.

That answered enough.

Maya whispered, “I’m calling train security.”

Victoria grabbed her wrist.

“No.”

Claire shoved Victoria away from Maya.

“What is wrong with you?”

Victoria lowered her voice.

“If security stops this train, everything becomes public.”

“My son was almost drugged.”

“It wasn’t poison.”

Claire stared.

Victoria immediately realized how much she had admitted.

“What was it?”

No answer.

Maya touched the call button on the wall.

Ethan struck the door.

“Claire, stop escalating this.”

Claire laughed in disbelief.

“Escalating?”

Noah pressed his face against her side.

She forced herself to lower her voice.

“What was in the packet?”

Victoria whispered, “A sedating medication.”

Maya looked horrified.

“For a seven-year-old?”

“It was a small amount.”

Claire’s hands curled.

She remembered striking Victoria in the dining car and forced herself to stay still.

Another act of rage would only frighten Noah more.

“You put something in my child’s drink.”

Victoria’s eyes flickered.

“To make him sleepy.”

“So he wouldn’t fight when Ethan took him?”

Victoria closed her eyes.

Outside, Ethan said, “Victoria, open the door.”

Claire looked at her.

“He’s giving you orders.”

“He’s trying to protect the family.”

“From me?”

“From what happens tomorrow.”

Claire frowned.

Tomorrow.

They were traveling to New York because Hawthorne Capital had an emergency shareholder meeting scheduled the next afternoon.

Daniel’s death had left the company’s voting structure complicated.

Claire personally owned six percent.

Noah’s testamentary trust held eighteen percent of the Class B voting shares Daniel had inherited from his father.

Until Noah turned twenty-five, the trust was managed by three trustees: Claire, an independent trust company, and Ethan.

Victoria had no direct voting control.

Unless she became Noah’s legal guardian under certain trust provisions.

Claire suddenly looked at the documents again.

“You’re trying to control his shares.”

Victoria said nothing.

Claire felt cold.

“What happens at tomorrow’s board meeting?”

Ethan answered through the door.

“Open this door and I’ll explain.”

“No.”

The train emerged from the tunnel.

Dim gray light returned through the windows.

Maya reached the onboard security supervisor.

Within minutes, two private rail security officers were in the corridor.

Ethan stepped back.

He looked immaculate in his charcoal suit.

Heavy silver watch.

Claire noticed it.

The same watch on the hand in Maya’s video.

She opened the door only after security stood between them.

Ethan looked at Noah.

“Buddy, you okay?”

Noah immediately hid behind Claire.

Ethan’s face changed.

Claire saw it.

A calculation.

Not concern.

“You stay away from him.”

“Claire, Victoria panicked.”

“She put medication in his juice.”

“I didn’t authorize that.”

Victoria snapped, “You handed me the packet.”

Ethan turned toward her.

The room went silent.

Victoria realized what she had said.

Maya lifted the phone.

“I have that too.”

Ethan stared at her.

His professional calm thinned.

“Those recordings involve privileged family legal discussions.”

Maya almost laughed.

“I’m a train attendant. I wasn’t part of your legal discussion.”

Claire looked at him.

“What did you want me to sign?”

Ethan glanced toward the leather case.

“You weren’t supposed to see those yet.”

“Then explain them.”

He stepped into the compartment.

Security followed.

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Hawthorne Capital is facing a hostile debt restructuring.”

“What does that have to do with Noah?”

“Everything.”

He pointed toward the trust documents.

“Daniel’s shares are the difference between our family keeping control and losing the company.”

“Then ask me to vote.”

“I did.”

“No, you told me tomorrow’s meeting was routine.”

“Because you’ve made it clear you want to sell.”

“I want an independent valuation.”

“You want to dismantle Daniel’s company.”

Claire stiffened.

“That company was killing him before he died.”

Victoria said, “How dare you.”

Claire turned.

“No. How dare you use my dead husband to justify drugging his child.”

Noah began crying again.

Claire immediately crouched.

“I’m sorry.”

He whispered, “Are they taking me?”

“No.”

She held his face gently.

“No one is taking you anywhere.”

Ethan watched them.

Then he said something that made Claire look up.

“You may not have the authority to promise that.”

Claire stood slowly.

“What did you say?”

Ethan opened his briefcase.

He removed a sealed envelope.

“This was filed this morning in Westchester County Family Court.”

Rachel Kim’s name was not on it.

Claire had no lawyer present.

She opened the envelope.

It was a verified petition seeking emergency temporary guardianship of Noah.

Petitioner:

Victoria Hawthorne.

The allegations claimed Claire had become volatile, financially reckless and physically aggressive.

Attached was a photograph.

Claire striking Victoria in the dining car.

Taken less than an hour earlier.

Claire stared at Ethan.

“You filed this before I hit her.”

“Yes.”

“Then how is that photograph attached?”

Ethan did not answer.

Maya stepped closer.

“This train has satellite internet.”

Claire understood.

They had updated the court filing from onboard.

The confrontation had become evidence almost immediately.

Her anger had been expected.

Maybe even provoked.

Claire looked toward the hidden packet.

Then toward Victoria.

“You wanted me to lose control.”

Victoria’s silence confirmed it.

Ethan straightened his cuffs.

“The emergency hearing is tomorrow morning.”

Claire felt the train move beneath her.

May you like

They were still hours from New York.

And someone had already started a legal process designed to take Noah before she could even reach the city.
