Chapter 1 - The Word That Broke the Room

The leather strap came down across Grace Mercer’s back while she used her own body to shield a terrified four-year-old girl.

WHACK.

Grace pitched forward on the marble floor.

Pain exploded between her shoulder blades, but she did not let go of Lily.

Instead, she curled tighter around the little girl, turning her back toward Victoria Cole so the next blow would land on her instead.

“Stop!” Lily screamed.

Victoria did not stop.

She stood above them in a white designer dress, her face twisted into something Grace had never seen so clearly before—rage stripped of manners, money, and beauty.

The dark leather strap rose again.

Lily trembled violently against Grace’s chest.

“Mrs. Cole, please,” Grace whispered. “She’s four.”

“You should have thought of that before you brought her into my home.”

“This is not about her.”

“It became about her the moment you walked through that door.”

Victoria swung her arm back.

BANG!

The penthouse door flew open.

Nathan Cole stood in the doorway.

For one frozen second, the billionaire chief executive seemed incapable of understanding what he was seeing.

Grace knelt on the marble.

Lily was curled against her.

Victoria stood behind them with a leather strap raised above her shoulder.

Nathan’s briefcase slipped from his hand.

“What the hell—”

Victoria’s face changed instantly.

The rage vanished.

“Nathan—”

“GET AWAY FROM THEM!”

He crossed the room in seconds.

Victoria tried to lower her arm, but Nathan stepped between her and Grace, knocked the strap aside, and slapped Victoria across the face.

The sound cracked through the penthouse.

Victoria stumbled and fell beside the sofa.

The strap skidded away.

Nathan did not strike her again.

He turned immediately.

Lily was sobbing.

Grace loosened her arms.

The child lifted her face.

When she saw Nathan, she scrambled to her feet and ran.

Nathan dropped to his knees automatically.

Lily threw herself into his arms.

He caught her.

“I’ve got you,” he murmured.

Her tiny fists closed around the lapels of his suit.

Nathan held the back of her head, staring over her shoulder at Grace.

Grace’s lower lip trembled.

Then Lily pulled back.

Her tear-soaked eyes met Nathan’s.

“Daddy…”

Nathan stopped breathing.

The room seemed to go silent around him.

His arms tightened around the little girl.

“What did you say?”

Grace closed her eyes.

Victoria slowly pushed herself up from the floor.

“Don’t,” she said.

Nathan looked at her.

Victoria’s cheek was already reddening.

“Don’t what?”

“She’s confused.”

Grace opened her eyes.

“No.”

Nathan’s gaze swung toward her.

Grace’s voice shook.

“She isn’t.”

Nathan stared.

Lily buried her face against him again.

Nathan looked down at the child, then back at Grace.

He had known Grace before.

Five years earlier, she had worked in compliance at Cole Meridian, the private real-estate empire founded by his father. For three months, during the ugliest separation of his relationship with Victoria, Nathan and Grace had become something neither of them had planned.

Then his father suffered a stroke.

Nathan went back to Victoria.

Grace disappeared from the company less than a month later.

Two years ago, Nathan had been surprised when Victoria told him she had hired Grace through a household staffing agency.

“She needed work,” Victoria had said.

Nathan had believed it was generosity.

Now a four-year-old girl was clinging to him and calling him Daddy.

Nathan’s voice dropped.

“How old is she?”

Grace swallowed.

“Four.”

Victoria laughed once.

It sounded brittle.

“Really, Nathan? You’re going to believe this?”

Nathan stood with Lily in his arms.

He looked at Grace.

“Is she mine?”

Grace could not make herself answer.

That silence did it.

Nathan’s face drained of color.

Victoria stepped forward.

“This is exactly what she wanted.”

Grace flinched.

Nathan noticed.

“What does that mean?”

“It means she’s been planning this.”

“Planning what?”

Victoria pointed at Grace.

“Destroying us.”

Grace’s fear hardened into anger.

“You were hitting a child.”

“She was stealing from my office!”

“She picked up your phone.”

“She knew exactly what she was doing.”

“She is four!”

Nathan looked down.

Lily’s breathing had become quick and shallow.

“Enough.”

He carried her toward the sofa, but Lily panicked when he tried to put her down.

“No!”

“All right.” He held her closer. “I’m not putting you down.”

Grace tried to stand.

Pain seized her back.

Nathan saw her knees buckle.

“Grace.”

“I’m fine.”

“You’re not.”

He pulled out his phone.

Victoria’s expression changed.

“Who are you calling?”

“911.”

Her eyes widened.

“Nathan.”

“You assaulted them.”

“You assaulted me.”

Nathan froze.

Victoria touched her cheek.

“You hit me.”

His jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

Grace stared at him.

He did not deny it.

Victoria gave a tiny, humorless smile.

“So call the police.”

Nathan did.

When he ended the call, the temperature in the room seemed to drop.

Victoria walked toward the windows.

Below them, Manhattan glittered indifferently.

“You have no idea what you’ve done,” she said.

Nathan looked at her reflection in the glass.

“No, Victoria. I think I’m finally beginning to understand what you’ve done.”

She turned.

For the first time, fear entered her eyes.

Then she looked at Grace.

“Tell him.”

Grace went still.

“Tell me what?” Nathan demanded.

Victoria smiled.

Not kindly.

“Ask Grace why I hired her.”

Grace’s face changed.

Nathan saw it.

Fear.

Guilt.

And something worse.

Recognition.

The elevator bell sounded outside.

Police were coming.

Victoria straightened her white dress.

May you like

Then she delivered the sentence that would haunt Nathan for weeks.

“Ask her why she agreed to come back.”
