Chapter 15 - Fifty Thousand Dollars for One Piece of Paper

Daniel Kessler lived in a retirement community outside Naples.

Nathan, Grace, Jordan, and Maya flew down together.

The journey was uncomfortable.

Nathan worked.

Grace stared out the window.

Neither mentioned how strange it felt to travel together after years of silence.

Daniel met them in a small house crowded with file boxes.

“I didn’t sell it,” he said immediately.

Nathan released a breath.

“But I considered it.”

Grace asked, “Why?”

Daniel shrugged.

“I’m seventy-six. Fifty thousand dollars is fifty thousand dollars.”

At least he was honest.

He retrieved a sealed envelope from a safe.

Inside was a photocopy of the complete six-page amendment.

Signature included.

Arthur Cole.

Samuel Greene.

Two witnesses.

Not the original.

But powerful corroboration.

Jordan examined it.

“This may be enough with testimony.”

Daniel nodded.

“I also kept this.”

A fax confirmation.

The document had been sent to Conrad Hale’s office five days after execution.

Nathan stared.

“Conrad received it.”

“Yes.”

That destroyed Conrad’s claim that he learned about Article Seven only during current litigation.

Grace whispered, “He knew for years.”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“There’s another thing.”

He pulled out a note.

Arthur’s handwriting.

If Nathan has a child, Conrad cannot be permitted to control the descendant block. Hales will use it to rescue their own balance sheet.

Nathan read the sentence.

His father had seen the entire structure.

Just not how far people would go.

Back in New York, Jordan prepared an emergency filing.

Then Claire called.

Not Grace.

Nathan.

Her voice shook.

“She knows I talked to you.”

“Victoria?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“She fired me.”

“You should get a lawyer.”

“I have one.”

“Will you testify?”

Claire was silent.

“Claire.”

“No.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

“Why?”

“Because Conrad’s lawyers offered me immunity from the civil claims if I stay out of it.”

“That’s not immunity.”

“I know.”

“What else?”

She began crying.

“They know about my brother.”

Nathan pressed his fingers against his forehead.

“Claire, listen to me. You’re already involved.”

“I’m sorry.”

She hung up.

Hours later, Claire signed an affidavit stating she had never personally witnessed Victoria order fraudulent payments or interfere with Grace’s communications.

It was technically true.

And devastating.

Grace read it.

“She recanted without lying.”

Maya nodded.

“She is protecting herself.”

Nathan said, “Victoria will use it to say everything Claire told us was gossip.”

Jordan’s phone buzzed.

“Worse.”

He turned a tablet around.

A short video had been leaked online.

Nathan slapping Victoria.

No footage before it.

No strap visible.

No Grace.

No Lily.

Just Nathan striking his wife.

Millions of views within hours.

Grace watched the comments scroll.

Monster.

Rich man thinks he owns women.

Arrest him.

Nathan turned the tablet face down.

“I did that.”

Grace looked at him.

“Yes.”

“I can’t complain that they showed the truth.”

“They showed a piece.”

“But the piece is true.”

That night, lenders began calling Cole Meridian.

One suspended a financing commitment pending “reputational review.”

The board scheduled another vote.

Nathan’s temporary leave might become permanent.

Conrad’s merger proposal returned.

Grace found Nathan alone in the conference room.

“You’re losing the company.”

“Yes.”

“How much does that matter to you?”

Nathan thought about it.

“Less than it did two weeks ago.”

“Don’t lie.”

He smiled sadly.

“It matters enormously.”

“Good.”

He looked surprised.

Grace continued.

“You don’t become better by pretending you stopped wanting power.”

Nathan studied her.

“What do I do with it?”

“That’s the question.”

His phone rang.

Miguel.

Nathan answered.

The former security chief sounded furious.

“They terminated me.”

“Who?”

“Elliott.”

“Why?”

“For preserving unauthorized footage.”

Nathan cursed.

Miguel continued.

“But before they locked me out, I found something.”

“What?”

“The original penthouse camera server was wiped after the attack.”

Nathan looked at Grace.

“Can you prove who did it?”

“No.”

A pause.

“But the deletion request came from Victoria’s blue phone.”
