Chapter 14 - The Man Who Signed

Richard requested another meeting.

This time Mara brought Naomi.

No lake house.

No private bargains.

They met in a glass conference room where every word was taken down by a court reporter.

Richard looked offended.

Mara didn’t care.

“You said Celeste’s buyer file was in the hidden compartment.”

“It was.”

“It’s gone.”

“Then she moved it.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

Naomi placed a document in front of him.

“This email was recovered from the family-office backup.”

Richard read it.

Proceed tonight. She’ll fold when she sees the suitcase.

His face collapsed.

Mara watched him.

“Say it.”

Richard looked at her.

“Say what?”

“That you knew.”

“I’ve told you—”

“Not privately. Not in half-confessions. Say exactly what you did.”

The court reporter waited.

Richard’s attorney whispered, “Do not answer.”

Richard stared at the email.

Then he spoke.

“I authorized the academy transport as leverage to obtain Mara’s resignation.”

Mara closed her eyes.

Even prepared, the words hurt.

“Did you intend Elise to reach Connecticut?”

Richard swallowed.

“I believed Mara would sign before departure.”

“That was not my question.”

His attorney objected.

Mara ignored him.

“Did you authorize transport?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know I had not consented?”

“Yes.”

“Did you possess a court order?”

“No.”

“Did you tell Elise I didn’t want her?”

Richard’s face broke.

“I told her you needed rest.”

“That isn’t what she heard.”

“I know.”

Mara leaned back.

For the first time, the truth was preserved somewhere Richard could not rewrite it later.

Naomi asked about the painting.

Richard invoked the Fifth Amendment.

She asked about Aster House.

The Fifth.

Museum transfers.

The Fifth.

Forgery of medical evidence.

“I did not forge the affidavit.”

“Did you give Celeste access to Mara’s old records?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know she intended to use them in guardianship litigation?”

“Yes.”

Mara stared at him.

Richard finally looked away.

The deposition lasted four hours.

By the end, Mara had gained evidence and lost the last excuse she had ever made for her father.

That evening Elise asked, “Is Grandpa going to jail?”

Mara did not know how to answer.

“He may have consequences.”

“What kind?”

“Adult ones.”

“Does he still love me?”

Mara sat beside her.

“Yes.”

“How do you know?”

“Because people can love you and still do terrible things.”

Elise frowned.

“That’s stupid.”

Mara laughed through tears.

“Yes.”

The financial team called at midnight.

They had traced Aster Cultural Management.

Its beneficial owner was the same irrevocable trust that controlled Aster House.

Celeste.

The merger was blatant self-dealing.

Naomi filed the evidence before dawn.

At 8:15 a.m., a judge temporarily enjoined the management contract pending the board’s full disclosure review.

Celeste’s Friday takeover was stopped.

For three hours, Mara felt she had won.

Then police arrived at Helen’s apartment.

Not to search.

To arrest.

A prosecutor had revived an investigation into falsified museum records connected with the replica painting.

Helen called Mara from processing.

“I’m all right.”

“This is Celeste.”

“No,” Helen said.

“That doesn’t mean the evidence is false.”

Mara fell silent.

Helen continued.

“I altered records. I told you.”

“You were pressured.”

“I still did it.”

Another consequence.

Another person finally refusing to hide from one.

Then Helen said something strange.

“Remember the sealed custody file?”

“Of course.”

“I didn’t find it by accident.”

Mara stood.

“What?”

“Someone sent me the accession number anonymously.”

“When?”

“The morning of the vault fight.”

“Who?”

“I never knew.”

After the call, Naomi obtained the original anonymous message.

One line.

Check GRB-1936-044 before seven tonight.

The message came from a prepaid number.

But the museum’s internal Wi-Fi log showed where it had been sent.

Richard’s private office.

Mara stared at the location.

May you like

Her father had helped set the trap.

But someone inside his office had also tried to save Elise.
