Chapter 16 - The Fire Behind Locker 417

Nathan reached Aldercrest to find flames rising from the east wing.
Firefighters blocked the entrance.
Sarah stood outside wrapped in a blanket.
“You were inside?”
“I smelled smoke.”
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Where did it start?”
“Founder’s corridor.”
Nathan looked toward the windows.
Locker 417.
Charles was destroying the place where Olivia’s evidence had lived.
Police learned Charles’s electronic monitoring unit had stopped transmitting forty minutes earlier.
His attorney claimed equipment malfunction.
No one believed it.
Harper approached.
“We have a vehicle connected to him heading north.”
“Lake Briar?”
“Maybe.”
Nathan looked at the fire.
“What’s left there?”
Sarah answered.
“The blue room.”
Rebecca, arriving behind them, stopped.
Olivia’s hidden statement had been removed.
But the lodge itself still contained structural evidence.
And Charles knew Veronica had told prosecutors about it.
Nathan’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Charles.
“Nathan.”
“Where are you?”
“You’ve made an extraordinary mess.”
“You killed Olivia.”
Silence.
Then Charles said, “Meet me at Lake Briar.”
“Why?”
“Because there is something your wife never told you.”
“My ex-wife.”
“You always correct that when you’re frightened.”
Nathan’s jaw tightened.
“What do you want?”
“Card 417.”
Of course.
“You’re under arrest.”
“I’m under accusation.”
“You burned Aldercrest.”
“Did I?”
“What happens if I don’t come?”
Charles paused.
“Ask your mother.”
Nathan’s blood turned cold.
He looked at Evelyn’s house location on his phone.
No answer when he called.
Again.
Nothing.
Harper immediately dispatched officers.
Nathan’s phone rang again.
Charles.
“Come alone.”
Nathan almost agreed.
Then stopped.
Old Nathan would have run.
New Nathan looked at Harper.
He put the call on speaker.
Charles continued.
“Bring the card.”
Nathan said, “I’ll come.”
Harper shook his head.
Nathan muted the phone.
“I’m not going alone.”
Rebecca nodded.
“Good.”
Twenty minutes later officers reached Evelyn’s house.
Empty.
No forced entry.
Ethan was at school under security.
Evelyn’s car was gone.
Camera footage showed her leaving voluntarily with a man wearing a cap.
The face was obscured.
Charles said he had her.
Nathan believed him.
Police coordinated a controlled response.
Nathan wore a recording device.
Membership Card 417 remained with police.
They created a duplicate.
At Lake Briar, snow had begun falling lightly.
Nathan entered the old lodge alone while tactical officers waited outside visual range.
“Mom?”
No answer.
Then Charles stepped from the blue-room corridor.
No weapon visible.
“Card.”
“Where is she?”
“Safe.”
“Show me.”
Charles smiled.
“You always negotiate emotionally.”
Nathan almost laughed.
“You forged my divorce evidence.”
“Veronica did.”
“You designed it.”
“She needed direction.”
“You stole from Aldercrest.”
“I monetized opportunities your family was too sentimental to use.”
“You kidnapped Olivia.”
Charles’s face tightened.
“She came at me with evidence that would have destroyed everything.”
“So?”
“She threatened eight hundred million dollars in member property value, hundreds of jobs, every Whitmore asset tied to Aldercrest.”
Nathan stared.
“And you still think that explains it.”
“It explains motive.”
“It explains greed.”
Charles stepped closer.
“Give me the card.”
“Why does it matter? Olivia is dead.”
“Because the original credential proves the Bennett succession was never surrendered.”
“So Ethan gets the veto.”
“Yes.”
“And the reversion.”
Charles’s eyes changed.
He knew now.
Nathan saw it.
“You didn’t know.”
Charles said nothing.
“Olivia beat you.”
“Olivia is dead.”
“And you still lost.”
Charles’s control broke.
He grabbed Nathan’s coat.
Nathan did not hit him.
“Where is my mother?”
Charles shoved him backward.
“Your mother isn’t here.”
Nathan froze.
“You lied.”
“Of course.”
The tactical team was already moving.
Charles heard something outside.
He reached inside his jacket.
Nathan reacted, catching his wrist.
A gun fell onto the floor.
They struggled.
Charles drove Nathan against the wall.
“You were always weak.”
Nathan held his wrist.
“Maybe.”
Charles tried reaching for the gun.
Nathan kicked it away.
“But weak men don’t have to stay stupid.”
Police flooded the room.
“Hands!”
Charles froze.
He was arrested.
Again.
This time bail would not be an issue.
Nathan sat against the wall breathing hard.
Harper picked up the duplicate membership card.
Charles saw it.
His face changed.
“Fake.”
Nathan smiled.
“The real one is nowhere near you.”
Charles had risked everything for a piece of plastic he could not control.
As officers led him away, he turned.
“You still don’t know what happened at the quarry.”
Nathan stood.
“Then tell me.”
Charles smiled.
“No.”
Nathan watched him disappear into the snow.
Rebecca entered.
“Evelyn is safe.”
Nathan exhaled.
“Where?”
“Shopping.”
He stared.
“Shopping?”
“Her phone battery died.”
Nathan laughed for the first time in days.
Charles had gambled on Nathan’s fear.
It almost worked.
Then Harper received a call from the fire scene.
Firefighters had opened the wall behind Locker 417.
The blaze exposed something no one knew existed.
A narrow steel safe built into the original 1928 stone.
Inside were Olivia’s final copies of the blackmail files.
And one envelope.
ETHAN — WHEN THE ADULTS FINISH LYING.
Nathan stared at the photograph Harper sent.

The final confrontation with Charles had become unavoidable.
But Olivia had already prepared for what came after.
