Chapter 8 - The Blue Room

Lake Briar Lodge had belonged to Nathan’s grandfather.

As a child, Nathan spent summers there.

The east bedroom had pale blue wallpaper covered in tiny silver birds.

After a pipe burst when Nathan was fourteen, his father closed the wing and later converted most of it into storage.

Nathan had not thought about the blue room in twenty-seven years.

Police searched the lodge first.

Nothing.

Nathan arrived with Rebecca and Detective Harper in the afternoon.

Charles had already retained criminal counsel and refused questioning.

The board insisted there was “no credible evidence” connecting him to Olivia’s disappearance.

Nathan wanted to scream.

Instead he looked.

The old blue room no longer existed.

But part of the original wall remained behind shelving.

Nathan remembered a childhood detail.

His father kept hunting rifles in a concealed cabinet behind the silver-bird wallpaper.

“Move this.”

Two officers shifted the shelving.

Behind it was plaster.

A thermal scanner showed a hollow space.

Police opened the wall.

Inside was a shallow cavity.

A waterproof document tube.

Nathan stared.

Olivia had known about the hiding place.

He had once shown it to her during their honeymoon.

Harper opened the tube with gloves.

Inside were copies of Aldercrest bank records.

A notarized statement.

And a small digital recorder.

The statement was signed by Olivia.

If you are reading this, I have reason to believe Charles Rainer and Veronica Shaw are conspiring to force the sale of Aldercrest land through fraud.

Veronica Shaw.

Not Whitmore.

The document predated Nathan’s marriage to her.

Olivia detailed the fabricated hotel photograph.

Hidden payments.

The forged Bennett approval.

Charles’s manipulation of Nathan.

Then Nathan reached the final paragraph.

I have not told Nathan where I put this because he still believes Charles is incapable of betraying him.

If Nathan finds it later, I hope the pain of being wrong finally makes him careful.

He stopped reading.

Rebecca waited.

Nathan continued.

I do not want him punished.

I want Ethan protected.

Nathan sat on the dusty floor.

Even while preparing evidence against people around him, Olivia had worried about what truth would do to Nathan.

Rebecca pressed PLAY on the recorder.

Olivia’s voice filled the ruined room.

“December seventh. Charles came to my apartment tonight.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

“He offered me three million dollars to sign away the Bennett founder right.”

Pause.

“I told him no.”

Another file.

“December twelfth. Veronica followed Ethan’s school bus.”

Nathan’s eyes opened.

“What?”

Olivia continued.

“She wants me to believe Ethan could become collateral.”

Rebecca looked at Harper.

“That’s coercion.”

Next recording.

“January third. I found the Briarcrest loan. Nathan’s signature is false.”

Nathan stared.

Olivia had known.

Another:

“I still haven’t told Nathan because every time I mention Charles, he becomes defensive. I hate him for that. I also hate myself because I still want him to believe me.”

Nathan lowered his head.

The last file was dated the night she vanished.

12:31 a.m.

“I’m going to Aldercrest.”

Her voice was steady.

“If I can get the old server, I can prove everything.”

A pause.

“If Ethan hears this someday, I need him to know I did not leave him.”

Nathan’s breath broke.

“I would never leave him.”

Silence.

“And Nathan…”

Another pause.

“I loved you. That was never the same thing as trusting you.”

The recording ended.

For nearly a minute nobody spoke.

Then Harper’s phone rang.

He listened.

“What?”

He turned toward Nathan.

“We got a warrant for Charles’s financial records.”

“And?”

“Briarcrest Holdings purchased property twelve days after Olivia disappeared.”

Nathan stood.

“Where?”

Harper showed him a map.

Lake Briar.

A small abandoned boathouse on the opposite side of the water.

Rebecca stared.

“Using money stolen through Aldercrest?”

“Yes.”

Nathan looked toward the dark lake beyond the window.

Charles had bought a property after Olivia disappeared.

A property no one knew he owned.

Police reached the boathouse before sunset.

Inside they found cleaning chemicals.

A destroyed phone.

And an old medical bag.

Harper opened it.

The prescribing physician’s name had been scratched away.

But one pharmacy label remained.

DR. ADRIAN KELLER.

Nathan knew the name.

Keller was Aldercrest’s club physician.

And one of Charles Rainer’s closest friends.

Harper called his office.

Closed.

His home.

No answer.

His mobile.

Disconnected.

Then Sarah called Nathan.

Her voice was shaking.

“Someone just entered Aldercrest.”

“Who?”

“Dr. Keller.”

Nathan froze.

“You’re not supposed to be there.”

“I came for my things.”

“Leave.”

“I’m trying.”

“What is Keller doing?”

“He went toward the founder’s corridor.”

Nathan looked at Harper.

“Sarah, get outside now.”

A door slammed through the phone.

Sarah whispered, “He saw me.”

Then the line went dead.
