Chapter 9 - Daniel’s Hidden Archive

The threat against Oscar changed the case.

Police took his statement.

The district attorney’s economic crimes bureau began reviewing the Northstar records.

Andrew responded by accusing Margaret of orchestrating a “campaign of harassment against WTD leadership.”

Publicly, he looked composed.

Privately, cracks were appearing.

Margaret knew because Andrew had started calling her.

Three times in one day.

She answered the fourth.

“You’re destroying Daniel’s company,” he said.

“Daniel’s company survived Daniel’s death.”

Silence.

Margaret continued, “Interesting choice of words, isn’t it?”

“You think you’re clever.”

“No. I think I was blind.”

“Same thing with you.”

Andrew hung up.

That afternoon Evelyn found a lawful path to Daniel’s archived server.

It was not owned by WTD.

The equipment had been purchased personally by Daniel through a consulting LLC before his death.

The warehouse had incorrectly listed WTD as owner.

Daniel’s estate was the legal owner.

And Emma was his heir.

With permission from the temporary guardian appointed by Family Court, the device was released for forensic imaging.

A cybersecurity expert named Priya Nand spent six hours recovering files.

At 8:40 p.m. she called Margaret and Evelyn into the lab.

“I found a directory called NORTHSTAR.”

Margaret stared at the monitor.

Inside were invoices, photographs of empty warehouses, emails, and a spreadsheet comparing actual equipment purchases with inflated bills.

Sixteen-point-one million dollars.

Exactly what Samuel’s ledger had suggested.

Then Priya opened an audio file.

Daniel’s voice filled the room.

May 12.

If you’re listening to this, it means I finally took Mom’s advice and backed up something important.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Daniel laughed softly in the recording.

Actually, that’s a lie. Mom’s advice was to confront people immediately and loudly.

Margaret almost laughed through her tears.

Then Daniel’s voice became serious.

Andrew says Northstar is legitimate. It isn’t. Sam is nervous. Vale is involved. I think money is moving into an acquisition fund Andrew controls.

Evelyn glanced at Margaret.

Daniel continued.

There is also something wrong with the maintenance records on my car.

Margaret stopped breathing.

Priya increased the volume.

Someone authorized service using my credentials while I was in Boston. The garage says it was requested through executive operations.

Andrew runs executive operations.

A pause.

I’m meeting him tomorrow.

Margaret whispered, “The day before the crash.”

Daniel’s recording continued.

Laura knows I’m worried, but I haven’t told her enough. Emma is two. I keep thinking about how ridiculous it is to be afraid when your daughter still calls spaghetti “getti.”

Margaret’s tears fell silently.

If anything happens to me, look at Northstar. Look at Vale. And make sure Mom doesn’t blame Laura.

The recording ended.

Margaret stared at the black screen.

For five years she had done exactly what Daniel feared.

Blamed Laura.

Priya spoke gently.

“There’s more.”

Another folder contained scans of handwritten notes.

One entry mentioned a planned special board vote.

Andrew wanted WTD to acquire three terminal properties from a private seller for $42 million.

Daniel discovered the properties had been purchased six months earlier for $19 million by a company linked to Andrew.

A hidden profit of twenty-three million dollars.

Daniel planned to expose the deal.

The board meeting had been scheduled for the morning after his death.

Evelyn sat back.

“Motive.”

Margaret’s voice was quiet.

“Money.”

“And control.”

Priya opened one final file.

An email draft Daniel never sent.

Mom—

You keep protecting Andrew because you think he’s the weaker son.

He isn’t weak.

He’s angry.

There’s a difference.

Margaret stopped reading.

That wound went deeper than the others.

Andrew had struggled as a teenager.

Daniel excelled effortlessly.

Margaret had compensated.

She excused Andrew’s failures.

Gave him second chances.

Loaned him money.

Promoted him after mistakes.

When Daniel complained, Margaret accused him of jealousy.

She had thought she was balancing love.

Perhaps she had been rewarding resentment.

Evelyn’s phone rang.

She answered and listened.

Her expression hardened.

“What?”

“The district attorney went to serve Thomas Vale with a grand-jury subpoena.”

“And?”

“He’s gone.”

“Gone where?”

“His apartment is empty. Phone off. Car abandoned at LaGuardia.”

Margaret looked at Daniel’s frozen email on the screen.

Then Priya spoke.

“There’s another file you should see.”

She opened a photograph Daniel had taken five years earlier.

Andrew and Thomas Vale stood beside Daniel’s black Mercedes in the underground WTD garage.

The timestamp was twelve hours before the crash.
