Chapter 15 - Love Without Truth

Ashford Hall became a secured scene.

Police searched the estate grounds.

Paul Mercer’s vehicle was found near the east service entrance.

He was gone.

Michael was gone.

But a hidden server room beneath Richard’s study showed fresh access.

Someone had tried to decrypt a drive.

Three failed attempts.

Conrad’s settlement ledger.

Michael had hidden a copy inside Ashford Hall before being moved.

Sophie entered the passphrase.

LOVE WITHOUT TRUTH IS JUST ANOTHER CONTRACT

The drive opened.

Maya looked at Elena.

“You remembered.”

“I wish I hadn’t needed to.”

The ledger was devastating.

For nineteen years Conrad had tracked confidential settlements.

Pension claims.

Employee retaliation agreements.

Political donations.

Property disputes.

Payments to Victoria.

Payments approved by Richard.

Private-investigator invoices.

Blackmail material.

Bribes disguised as consulting.

Not every payment was criminal.

Enough were.

The archive also contained recordings.

Conrad had secretly recorded clients and allies.

Victoria’s voice appeared dozens of times.

Richard’s too.

Michael’s.

Gabriel’s.

Then Sophie found a folder dated the week Michael disappeared.

Inside:

Victoria: “I want Elena removed from the codicil before Michael goes public.”

Conrad: “Then make Michael’s absence look voluntary.”

Victoria: “He will never abandon her convincingly.”

Conrad: “We only need documents.”

Victoria: “Do not hurt him.”

Conrad: “You said the same thing about Marlowe twenty years ago.”

Silence.

Then Victoria:

“And you ignored me then too.”

Elena looked at Victoria.

Victoria’s face had emptied.

“What happened twenty years ago?”

Gabriel asked.

Victoria stared at the screen.

“Conrad arranged the car.”

Elena’s body went cold.

“He forced Dad’s car into the river?”

“No.”

Victoria shook her head.

“He found Gabriel’s abandoned car after Gabriel escaped. Conrad sent it through the bridge barrier to make disappearance look like death.”

Gabriel closed his eyes.

His story had been true.

Conrad created the final illusion.

“You knew?”

Elena asked.

“Later.”

“And did nothing.”

“Yes.”

The prosecutor would have questions.

Many.

The archive became enough to charge Conrad with additional offenses.

It also supported Gabriel’s claims.

But Michael remained missing.

Then the estate’s old alarm system triggered beneath the chapel.

A door sensor.

Reyes looked at the map.

“The sealed room.”

Everyone moved.

Elena stayed behind the police line.

This time willingly.

Officers descended.

The room was empty.

A laptop sat on the cot.

Live video call.

Mercer appeared.

Behind him stood Michael.

Alive.

Elena stepped toward the screen.

“Michael.”

His face changed.

“Elena.”

She almost collapsed.

Mercer held no visible weapon.

But his hand remained inside his jacket.

Reyes took control.

“Paul Mercer, this is Detective Daniel Reyes. Release Michael and tell us your location.”

Mercer laughed.

“You have the ledger?”

Elena looked at Michael.

He shook his head.

Do not trade it.

Mercer said, “Destroy it.”

Sophie whispered, “There are already forensic copies.”

Mercer could not know.

Elena stepped closer to the camera.

“Paul.”

He looked at her.

“You worked for Richard thirty-two years.”

“So?”

“You know how this family operates.”

“Better than you.”

“Then you know they never protect the people who do the dirty work.”

Mercer’s expression shifted.

“Conrad is in custody.”

No response.

“Victoria is cooperating.”

Victoria glared at her.

Partly true.

“Richard is dead.”

Elena continued.

“You are the only person still risking everything for secrets that no longer belong to anyone.”

Mercer’s jaw tightened.

Michael watched him.

Elena said, “Bring Michael home and get your own lawyer.”

Mercer laughed.

“You think I trust prosecutors?”

“No.”

“Then why would I surrender?”

“Because Conrad will blame you.”

That landed.

Victoria stepped into view.

“Paul.”

Mercer’s face changed.

“Mrs. Ashford.”

Victoria’s voice was cold.

“Conrad always called you useful.”

Mercer swallowed.

“He called you loyal when you were in the room.”

Silence.

“And disposable when you left.”

Elena looked at Victoria.

For once, manipulation was being used against someone who had earned caution.

Mercer’s confidence broke.

“Where are you?”

Reyes asked.

Mercer looked behind him.

Michael suddenly moved.

He grabbed Mercer’s wrist.

The camera fell.

A struggle sounded.

Elena screamed Michael’s name.

Then the feed went black.

Reyes shouted orders.

A technician traced the connection.

“Cell tower triangulation. Hudson corridor.”

“How close?”

“Five miles.”

Another signal appeared.

Michael’s smartwatch.

Offline for weeks.

Now connected.

Location:

Ashford family cemetery.

Beneath Richard’s mausoleum.

Again.

Reyes ran.

This time Elena did not follow.

She stood gripping Michael’s ring.

Waiting.

Choosing trust over panic.

Twenty-two minutes later, Reyes called.

“We have Michael.”

Elena stopped breathing.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“And Mercer?”

“In custody.”

“Michael?”

A pause.

Then another voice came onto the phone.

“Elena?”

She collapsed into a chair.

Michael.

She began crying.

“I’m here.”

“I know.”

“Are you hurt?”

“Not badly.”

Silence.

Then Michael said the words she needed more than any declaration of love.

“I’m sorry I lied to you.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“So am I.”

He sounded confused.

May you like

“For what?”

“For thinking finding you would solve everything.”
