Chapter 11 - Bianca’s Price

Julian’s security team found no one.
That was worse.
It meant the person photographing Mara knew when to leave.
Mara moved again, this time to Helen’s guest apartment.
She hated every second of it.
Grant was shrinking her life.
Her own apartment was unsafe.
Her job was gone.
Her name appeared beside words like thief, mistress and blackmailer.
Her pregnancy, something private and frightening and increasingly precious, had become a headline.
At 2:00 a.m., Mara found Bianca awake in Helen’s kitchen.
They were both temporarily staying there because Bianca refused Julian’s properties too.
Bianca stared at a mug of tea.
“I used to have six bedrooms.”
Mara opened the refrigerator.
“Congratulations.”
“I’m not complaining.”
“You sound like you are.”
Bianca smiled weakly.
“I’m observing how useless six bedrooms become when none belong to you.”
Mara sat.
For several minutes neither spoke.
Then Mara asked, “Why did my mother trust you at all?”
Bianca looked down.
“Because I confessed something to her before I ever confessed it to Grant.”
“The foundation money?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“A hundred and twelve thousand.”
Mara stared.
Bianca’s shame deepened.
“I was chairing a charity gala. I reimbursed personal expenses through event accounts. Dresses. Travel. A watch.”
“A watch?”
“I told myself I would repay it.”
“People steal using very elegant vocabulary.”
“I know.”
“Did you repay it?”
“Every dollar, after Rosa discovered it.”
Mara leaned back.
“She could have exposed you.”
“She threatened to.”
“What stopped her?”
“I repaid the money, resigned from financial oversight and gave her access to my records.”
“So she gave you a second chance.”
“Yes.”
“And then you helped Grant steal millions.”
Bianca’s eyes filled.
“That is the part I cannot forgive myself for.”
Mara’s voice sharpened.
“Don’t turn guilt into self-pity.”
Bianca nodded.
“You really are her daughter.”
Mara hated how much that mattered.
Bianca reached for her phone.
“There’s something I haven’t shown you.”
Mara laughed softly.
“Of course.”
“Because it makes me look worse.”
“That narrows nothing.”
Bianca opened a message thread with Grant from the day before the cemetery confrontation.
Grant: She visits Rosa tomorrow.
Bianca: I’m not digging through a grave.
Grant: Nobody asked you to. Find out if she has the key.
Bianca: How?
Grant: Use whatever she is hiding.
Then Bianca’s message:
I found a pregnancy test in her locker. Positive.
Grant:
Whose?
Bianca:
I don’t know.
Grant:
Find out. If she has Mercer or another investor behind her, we change strategy.
Mara stared at the screen.
“So you knew the affair accusation might be false.”
Bianca did not defend herself.
“I suspected Grant because I had seen him meet you.”
“But the confrontation was partly performance.”
“Yes.”
“The slap?”
“No.”
“Why should I believe that?”
“You shouldn’t.”
Mara looked again at the messages.
One after Bianca arrived at the cemetery:
Bianca: She’s here.
Then:
Bianca: Mercer just arrived.**
Grant:
JULIAN MERCER?
Bianca:
Yes.
Grant:
Leave. Now. Do not say anything about Briar Lane.
Mara’s stomach turned.
“The minute Julian arrived, Grant panicked.”
“Yes.”
“Because he knew Julian would audit.”
“Yes.”
Mara looked at Bianca.
“You said, ‘If he finds out.’”
Bianca nodded.
“I meant the fraud.”
“You let me think there was some secret about Julian.”
“I was terrified.”
“You were manipulating me.”
“Yes.”
That admission destroyed the small amount of trust they had built.
Mara stood.
“We’re done.”
“Mara—”
“No.”
“I gave you the messages.”
“After lying repeatedly.”
“I’m trying now.”
“You always try after someone corners you.”
The words cut deeply.
Bianca whispered, “That’s true.”
Mara walked away.
By morning, Bianca had disappeared.
She left no note.
No call.
Her phone went directly to voicemail.
Mara immediately suspected Grant.
Julian suspected Bianca had gone back voluntarily.
Both possibilities were ugly.
At noon, Grant’s attorney sent Helen a sworn declaration signed by Bianca.
It stated that Mara had threatened to expose fabricated allegations unless Grant paid her $2 million.
It stated Julian was using Mara to force Whitmore Development into surrendering partnership assets.
It stated Rosa Ellis had accepted payment to approve the trust sale.
Mara read it twice.
Then looked at Helen.
“She went back.”
Helen’s expression was grim.
“Yes.”
Julian swore under his breath.
Mara felt something inside her harden.
Bianca had cried.
Confessed.
Shared messages.
Claimed she wanted to change.
Then the moment fear became expensive, she had returned to Grant.
Helen kept reading.
“There’s more.”
At the bottom, Bianca claimed the cemetery confrontation began because Mara admitted Grant was the father of her baby.
Mara laughed in disbelief.
“She reversed everything.”
Julian’s face was cold.
“This is designed to make Grant’s earlier payments look like support or hush money related to an affair.”
“And my fraud claims look like revenge.”
“Yes.”
Mara stared at Bianca’s signature.
Another signature.
Another weapon.
Helen looked closer.
“Wait.”
“What?”
“She signed this electronically at 4:12 this morning.”
“So?”
Helen turned her laptop.
“The certificate includes geolocation metadata from the signing service.”
Mara read the location.
It was not Grant’s penthouse.
It was the Whitmore Development executive office.
At 4:12 a.m.
Julian frowned.
“Why would Grant take her there overnight?”
Mara thought of Bianca’s warning.
He built evidence against everyone.
Then a second email arrived from Bianca’s account.
No text.
Just an audio file.
Mara pressed play.
Bianca whispered:
“If you hear this, I signed what Grant wanted. Don’t believe it. I’m buying time.”
Then Grant’s voice sounded in the background.
“Bianca?”
The recording ended.
Bianca had betrayed them.
May you like
Or she had gone back inside the trap deliberately.
Mara no longer knew which possibility frightened her more.
