Chapter 15 - Richard’s Choice

Richard admitted it.

“After the first week, I chose not to return.”

Daniel stood.

“What?”

Eleanor stared too.

“You told me Adrian kept you there.”

“He did initially.”

“For how long?”

“Six days.”

“And after?”

Richard looked ashamed.

“I realized if I returned immediately, Adrian would destroy the archives and deny everything.”

“So you stayed at Pelican Station.”

“Yes.”

“Voluntarily.”

“For a period.”

Laura’s anger rose.

“How long?”

“Five weeks.”

Daniel stared.

“You let me believe you were dead for five weeks by choice?”

“I believed Eleanor would tell you I was alive.”

Everyone looked at her.

Eleanor said quietly, “I did not.”

Richard’s face tightened.

“I know.”

Daniel laughed in disbelief.

“So you trusted the woman hiding your disappearance to tell me?”

“I sent messages.”

“Through whom?”

“Adrian.”

Daniel nearly shouted.

“Dad!”

Richard held up a hand.

“I made an unforgivable miscalculation.”

Laura asked, “What happened after five weeks?”

“Samuel and I prepared to leave.”

“Then Adrian physically prevented you?”

“Yes.”

From then onward, confinement was no longer voluntary.

This mattered legally.

Adrian’s lawyers would use Richard’s first five weeks to muddy the kidnapping narrative.

But not erase later coercion.

Emotionally, it was devastating.

Richard chose secrecy too.

Again.

He thought evidence mattered more than the pain caused by letting Daniel mourn him.

Daniel left the room.

Laura found him on deck.

He was crying.

Not dramatically.

Quietly.

“My father watched me bury him.”

Laura sat beside him.

“He thought he was building a case.”

“He knew Mom told me he was dead.”

“Afterward.”

“He could have found a way.”

“Yes.”

Daniel wiped his face.

“Every person I loved chose strategy over me.”

Laura looked at him.

“Not every person.”

He turned.

“I cheated before our wedding and hid it from you.”

“Yes.”

“I chose strategy too.”

“Yes.”

He laughed bitterly.

“You’re really bad at comfort.”

“I’m trying a new thing called truth.”

He smiled despite himself.

Then his face sobered.

“Why are you still here?”

Laura looked at the sea.

“Because staying today does not mean promising forever.”

He nodded.

That was enough.

Hale Maritime’s special committee completed its preliminary report.

Daniel had not knowingly participated in offshore fraud.

But he failed to exercise adequate oversight.

He relied excessively on Adrian and Richard.

His comments about “regulatory disruption” showed awareness of Blue Harbor’s sensitivity without inquiry.

The board extended his suspension for six months.

Daniel accepted publicly.

The announcement hurt the company less than expected.

Employees responded to accountability.

Some investors did too.

Richard resigned from all formal roles permanently.

He agreed to testify.

Samuel’s old case was reopened and then substantially dismissed after evidence confirmed the eleven-million accusation was fabricated.

His unauthorized four-million transfer remained under review, but because the money was preserved and returned, prosecutors considered a negotiated resolution.

Laura’s firm cleared her conflict review.

She returned to work.

Not triumphantly.

Some clients did not come back.

She accepted that.

Then her marriage suffered another blow.

A woman named Caroline Pierce contacted Laura.

Conrad? Wrong name, no Conrad. Adrian Vale's prior assistant maybe. Let's use Megan Vale? Need no random unless helpful. Maybe Adrian's estranged daughter, Caroline Vale, 31, contacts. She has messages showing Daniel knew affair? That may be too much. We need serious setback chapters 13-16, Chapter16 final confrontation unavoidable. Let's use something bigger: Daniel learns Laura had consulted divorce attorney months before anniversary due Eleanor tension and didn't tell him. That's not equal but shows Laura also kept plans. Could be protagonist mistake. But user asked betrayal, not cheap. Let's do Laura had been preparing to leave marriage after Daniel minimized her concerns, and Richard knew because she asked him about trust? Hmm.

Catherine receives subpoena revealing Laura met a divorce lawyer eight weeks before anniversary.

Daniel sees. His face changes.

“You were leaving me.”

Laura looks down.

“I was considering it.”

“You never told me.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because every time I raised your mother, you defended her.”

“So you prepared legal exit papers.”

“I asked questions.”

“Were there drafts?”

“Yes.”

Daniel laughs bitterly.

“Truth.”

Laura feels ashamed.

“I was afraid you’d move family assets if you knew.”

Daniel is hurt.

“Did you think I would cheat you financially?”

“I thought Eleanor might.”

“And you didn’t trust me to stop her.”

“No.”

That truth lands.

Laura had demanded truth while preparing in secret too. Not equivalent to his affair, but meaningful.

Daniel steps away.

“We were already breaking before the anniversary.”

Laura says, “Yes.”

Power reversal emotional.

Then Captain Reyes reports a call from prosecutors: Adrian’s plea agreement requires a live evidentiary hearing where all principal actors testify because he disputes Eleanor’s role and Richard’s confinement. Also the board schedules a special shareholder meeting tied to control. Perhaps Chapter 16 final confrontation unavoidable. Let's write.
