Chapter 3 - The Yacht Goes Dark

Emergency lighting flooded the corridor in red.
Captain Reyes moved immediately.
“Stay here.”
Daniel grabbed his arm.
“No.”
“Daniel, if the bridge systems have been compromised, I need crew focused.”
“I’m coming.”
Reyes looked at Laura.
“Lock the study.”
Laura did.
Eleanor stood beside the safe.
For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.
“Adrian was never supposed to touch the navigation system.”
Daniel turned.
“Never supposed to?”
Eleanor realized the admission.
Laura did too.
“You gave him remote access.”
“No.”
“You just said—”
“I allowed him access to company systems. Not navigation.”
Daniel stared.
“What did you do with him?”
Eleanor’s chin rose.
“Watch your tone.”
Laura laughed in disbelief.
“You slapped me twice, lied about your husband’s death, and apparently helped your CFO take over your yacht. I think we’re beyond tone.”
Eleanor’s eyes sharpened.
Daniel said, “Laura.”
Not rebuke.
Warning.
Eleanor had spent decades weaponizing reactions.
Laura understood.
She stepped back.
The lights returned after ninety seconds.
Reyes called from the bridge.
“Daniel. Come up.”
Laura went too.
The bridge team had restored local steering.
Remote access was disabled.
The Aurelia slowed.
Reyes pointed to the network log.
The reroute command had come from an authenticated Hale Maritime executive account.
ADRIAN.VALE.
Daniel called him again.
This time Adrian answered.
“Daniel.”
“Did you reroute my yacht?”
A pause.
“You found the safe.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“That’s your answer?”
“I’m trying to prevent you from making a mistake.”
“Where is my father?”
“You need to come back to Palm Beach.”
“Why?”
“The board meets tomorrow.”
“My father is alive.”
Another pause.
Adrian’s voice softened.
“Daniel, your father suffered a serious psychological crisis.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
Laura saw it.
“He became obsessed with old accusations. Samuel Bennett manipulated him.”
Laura stepped closer to the phone.
“My father was framed.”
Adrian laughed.
“Laura, your father disappeared with millions.”
“Richard says otherwise.”
“Richard wrote many things when he was unwell.”
The same phrase Eleanor used.
Laura looked at her.
Scripted.
Daniel heard it too.
“Did you and Mom coordinate the story about Dad’s mental health?”
Adrian answered too quickly.
“No.”
Daniel’s expression went cold.
“You’re a terrible liar when you’re scared.”
“I am not scared.”
“Then meet us at Pelican Station.”
Silence.
Adrian said, “Do not go there.”
“Why?”
“Because Samuel is dangerous.”
Laura closed her eyes.
There it was.
The old weapon.
Her father’s reputation.
Daniel said, “You rerouted us there.”
“I wanted Reyes to understand where this was heading and turn back.”
“That makes no sense.”
“It will.”
Adrian hung up.
Captain Reyes studied the navigation history.
“The remote route was not only a course change.”
“What else?”
“It uploaded a destination package.”
He opened it.
A file appeared in the ship’s navigation notes.
One sentence.
BRING THE SAFE DOCUMENTS OR RICHARD DOES NOT LEAVE THE ISLAND.
Laura stopped breathing.
Daniel stared at Eleanor.
“Dad is being held there?”
“No.”
“Then explain that.”
“I can’t.”
“You said he was waiting.”
“He was waiting.”
“For five months?”
Eleanor’s shoulders lowered.
“He chose to go there at first.”
“At first.”
“Yes.”
The truth came out in fragments.
Richard and Samuel met at Pelican Station to review evidence.
Richard planned to return and confront the board.
Adrian discovered the meeting.
Eleanor begged Richard not to expose the offshore system publicly.
“He refused,” Eleanor said.
“So you declared him dead?”
“Not immediately.”
“What did you do?”
“We told him to stay on the cay while we negotiated.”
Laura stared.
“You told a grown man he couldn’t come home?”
“We controlled the transport.”
Daniel’s voice became low.
“You stranded him.”
“It wasn’t supposed to last.”
“How long?”
“Three days.”
“It has been five months.”
Eleanor looked away.
Daniel nearly lost control.
Laura caught his hand.
He looked at her.
“Don’t.”
He breathed.
Then asked, “Who kept him there after three days?”
Eleanor whispered, “Adrian.”
Captain Reyes’s jaw tightened.
“You told the crew Mr. Hale had drowned.”
“I was trying to prevent a scandal.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“That sentence should be on the family crest.”
Laura returned to the safe documents.
Among the photographs was one showing Richard and Samuel beside a metal case.
On the back:
ORIGINAL LEDGER — P.S.
Pelican Station.
“The original evidence is there,” Laura said.
“That’s why Adrian wants the safe documents too.”
Daniel frowned.
“Why?”
“To know what Richard copied.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“You don’t understand Adrian.”
“Then explain him.”
“He has kept this company alive for twenty-eight years.”
Daniel stared.
“So did Dad.”
“Your father inherited power. Adrian built systems.”
“And you?”
Eleanor said nothing.
Laura looked at her.
“You’re protecting Adrian.”
Eleanor’s face changed.
Just enough.
Daniel saw it.
His voice became quiet.
“How long?”
Eleanor froze.
Laura understood before she spoke.
Daniel did too.
“How long have you been sleeping with him?”
“Daniel.”
“How long?”
Eleanor’s silence became confession.
Daniel backed away.
His father’s disappearance.
The offshore money.
The board proxy.
Now an affair.
Laura reached for him.
He pulled away from everyone.
Reyes spoke softly.
“Daniel.”
Daniel looked at the black ocean beyond the bridge windows.
“Keep course for Pelican Station.”
Eleanor snapped, “No.”
He turned.
“It’s my yacht.”
“Technically, the vessel is held by Hale Marine Assets LLC.”
Daniel stared.
Eleanor realized another mistake.
“And who controls that?”
Laura asked.
Eleanor said nothing.
Daniel’s phone chimed again.
A banking alert.
Hale Maritime’s general counsel had filed emergency notice freezing Daniel’s executive access pending tomorrow’s board meeting.
Adrian had moved first.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“You helped him take my father.”
“No.”
“You helped him take his company.”
“I protected the company.”
“And now?”
Eleanor looked toward the coordinates glowing on the navigation screen.
“Now Adrian is protecting himself.”
Reyes zoomed in on the weather display.
A tropical squall line was closing around Pelican Station.
“We can reach the cay in four hours.”
Laura looked at Daniel.
He seemed shattered.
But then his eyes settled on the photograph of Richard and Samuel.
“Four hours.”
He turned to Reyes.
“No one communicates our route to shore.”
Reyes nodded.
Then a deck officer called from the aft security station.
“Captain, we have an unauthorized launch deployment.”
Reyes grabbed the intercom.
“What launch?”
“The starboard tender.”
Daniel looked toward Eleanor.
“Who’s on it?”
The answer came seconds later.
“One passenger.”
Security footage appeared.
Eleanor’s pearl-gray coat.
Her handbag.
Her profile.
But Eleanor was standing right beside them.
Laura frowned.
“Then who is that?”
Reyes enlarged the image.
The woman turned toward the camera.
May you like
It was Eleanor’s personal assistant, Celeste Ward.
And she was carrying the black document pouch from Richard’s study safe.
