Chapter 1 - Behind the Bars

Emily Carter Whitmore was eight months pregnant when her husband locked her inside a dog kennel.
Not metaphorically.
Not as a threat.
Damon Whitmore slammed the heavy cedar door shut, snapped the metal latch into place, and turned the key.
Emily stood barefoot behind the bars on the stone patio of Lake Briar House, one hand gripping the cedar frame and the other wrapped protectively beneath her swollen belly.
“Damon, let me out!”
He slipped the key into his pocket.
“No.”
Thirty-six-year-old Damon did not look drunk, enraged, or out of control.
That frightened Emily more.
He looked deliberate.
Beside him, Lacey Monroe lifted a crystal wineglass to her lips.
She was wearing Emily’s white silk robe.
Emily’s robe.
At Emily’s house.
And less than an hour earlier, Emily had discovered Lacey’s suitcase open across the bed in the master bedroom.
Her bedroom.
The room where Emily’s maternity clothes still hung in the closet and the framed ultrasound of her unborn daughter stood on Damon’s nightstand.
Lacey took a sip.
“The dogs never complained.”
Emily stared at her.
The humiliation hurt.
But underneath it was something colder.
This was planned.
“What did you do to my room?”
Lacey smiled.
“You left.”
“I went to my father’s for two nights.”
“You still left.”
Emily looked at Damon.
“I left because you told me you needed space.”
“I needed you to calm down.”
“You moved your mistress into our bedroom.”
Lacey’s smile vanished.
Damon said, “Stop.”
Emily struck the kennel bars.
“LET ME OUT!”
“Not until you agree to listen.”
“To what?”
“The future.”
Emily almost laughed.
“My future doesn’t involve discussing finances from inside a cage.”
Damon stepped closer.
“You’re proving my point.”
“What point?”
“That you’ve become unstable.”
There it was.
The word.
Unstable.
He had used it three times during the last month.
When Emily refused to let him borrow against the lakeside estate.
When she changed the password to her investment account.
When she told him Lacey was too involved in their marriage.
Unstable.
Lacey leaned against the patio table.
“You should think about Ava.”
Emily’s blood ran cold.
“Do not say my daughter’s name.”
“You’re thirty-four weeks pregnant and screaming.”
“Because I’m locked in a kennel!”
Headlights swept across the lake-facing windows.
All three adults froze.
A car rolled into the circular drive.
Emily knew it instantly.
Her father’s dark blue Volvo.
She grabbed the bars.
“DAD!”
Damon swore.
Lacey put down her wine.
Robert Carter stepped onto the patio carrying an overnight bag.
He was sixty-two, gray-haired, broad-shouldered, and still wearing the rumpled sport coat from the conference he had driven in from.
He stopped.
His bag fell from his hand.
His pregnant daughter was locked inside the cedar kennel Damon had commissioned years earlier for two hunting dogs they no longer owned.
Lacey stood in Emily’s robe.
Damon stood beside the lock.
“Emily?”
Her fingers tightened.
“Dad…”
That one word carried everything.
Robert looked at Damon.
Then Lacey.
Then the bars.
“Open it.”
Damon straightened.
“Robert, you don’t understand what she—”
“Open it.”
“She became aggressive.”
Robert took one step forward.
“Now.”
Damon hesitated.
Big mistake.
Robert seized Damon’s wrist.
The key fell from his pocket.
Robert snatched it from the stone, unlocked the kennel, and opened the door.
Emily stepped out so quickly she nearly stumbled.
Robert caught her.
“You okay?”
“I don’t know.”
He pulled her behind him.
Lacey rolled her eyes.
“She’s being dramatic.”
Emily looked at her.
“He gave her my bedroom.”
Robert’s face changed.
Damon said, “This isn’t about Lacey.”
“Then what is it about?” Robert demanded.
Emily’s eyes shifted toward the patio table.
A black folder sat beside Lacey’s wineglass.
Her full name was printed on the cover.
EMILY CARTER WHITMORE.
She had seen that folder before.
Three days earlier Damon had refused to let her touch it.
Fear moved aside.
Something colder took its place.
“Dad.”
Robert looked back.
“Open that.”
Damon froze.
“That’s private.”
Robert reached for it.
Damon moved.
Robert turned on him.
“Take one more step.”
Damon stopped.
Robert opened the folder.
The first document was a property-transfer agreement.
Lake Briar House.
Eight acres.
Private dock.
Guest cottage.
Current appraised value: $8.4 million.
Owner:
Emily Carter Whitmore.
Proposed transferee:
Whitmore Lake Holdings LLC.
Managing member:
Damon Whitmore.
Robert looked up.
“What is this?”
Emily took the page.
Her signature appeared at the bottom.
She felt her stomach turn.
“I never signed that.”
Damon’s jaw tightened.
“It was prepared for discussion.”
“With my forged signature?”
Robert kept reading.
A second document authorized Damon to manage specified investment accounts after the birth of Emily’s first child.
A third referenced a proposed emergency custody petition.
Robert’s face changed.
“Custody?”
Lacey stopped smiling.
Emily took the page.
The petition had not been filed.
It could not be filed for an unborn child.
But it had been drafted.
It alleged that after delivery Emily might become “psychologically unstable, financially irrational, and unsafe as the child’s primary caregiver.”
Emily whispered, “You wrote this before she’s even born.”
Damon said nothing.
Then Robert found the sealed envelope.
Across the front:
AFTER DELIVERY.
Lacey’s wineglass shook in her hand.
“Damon.”
Robert tore it open.
The first page was titled:
POST-DISCHARGE CARE PLAN — AVA GRACE WHITMORE.
Emily saw her daughter’s chosen name.
Below it:
Primary Residential Parent: Damon Whitmore.
Temporary Live-In Caregiver: Lacey Monroe.
Emily stopped breathing.
“Why is her name next to my child?”
Nobody answered.
Robert pulled out the next sheet.
A draft affidavit from Lacey.
It claimed she had been staying at Lake Briar House because Emily had become erratic, paranoid, and threatening.
It claimed Damon had asked Lacey to help maintain a “stable home environment” for the baby.
It described incidents that had never happened.
Then Robert found a handwritten timeline.
DELIVERY.
OBSERVE BEHAVIOR.
DOCUMENT AGITATION.
FILE TEMPORARY MOTION.
SECURE HOUSE.
ACTIVATE FINANCIAL AUTHORIZATION.
Robert looked at Damon.
“What were you planning after my daughter gave birth?”
Damon went pale.
Emily felt Ava move beneath her ribs.
And suddenly she understood.
The kennel was not the end of a fight.
It was rehearsal.
A woman behind bars.
A witness calling her unstable.
A husband controlling the door.
Documents already written to explain what everyone would supposedly see.
Emily looked straight into Damon’s eyes.
“You weren’t trying to break me.”
He said nothing.
“You were waiting for the baby.”
Lacey lunged toward Robert.
“Don’t read anything else!”
Robert pulled the remaining pages away.
At the bottom of the envelope was a financing term sheet.
Borrower:
Whitmore Development Group.
Required additional collateral:
Lake Briar House and associated Emily Carter investment assets.
Amount:
$5,600,000.
Closing deadline:
Fourteen days after anticipated delivery.
Robert raised his eyes.
“What did you do?”
Outside, a siren began approaching along the lakeshore road.
Emily had never called police.
Robert had.
Before opening the kennel.
May you like
And as Damon turned toward the sound, Emily saw fear replace control for the first time.
The man who had locked her behind bars suddenly wanted an exit.
