Chapter 16 - Nathan's Signature

The board removed Nathan permanently.
Claire delivered the news in person.
They met in a conference room that no longer belonged to him.
The vote was eleven to two.
Claire voted yes.
Nathan did not ask who voted no.
It did not matter.
"You'll retain your shares," she said.
"Whatever survives."
"The company needs distance."
Nathan looked at the Mercer Systems logo behind her.
"You mean from me."
"Yes."
He appreciated the honesty.
Claire folded her hands.
"Federal investigators are asking whether you created a culture that enabled the fraud."
"I did."
Her expression tightened.
"Stop saying that."
"Why?"
"Because responsibility isn't the same as criminal guilt."
"I know."
"Then stop volunteering language that sounds like guilt."
Nathan leaned back.
"Laura warned me. I ignored her. People used my signature because they knew I wouldn't read. Julian stole, Victoria helped, maybe people bribed officials, and I was the man at the top demanding speed."
Claire looked away.
"You sound like her."
"Maybe I should have listened when she was alive."
The words hurt both of them.
Claire stood.
"There's something I haven't told you."
Nathan almost smiled.
"Of course there is."
"Not here."
"Why?"
"Because I don't trust this building."
They drove separately to a church parking lot.
Claire remained in her car.
Nathan sat beside her.
She removed a folded sheet of paper from inside her coat.
An email.
Printed three years earlier.
From Laura.
To Claire.
Subject: IF YOU IGNORE THIS, YOU BECOME PART OF IT.
Nathan read.
Laura described shell companies.
Julian.
Victoria.
Calder Security.
At the bottom, Laura wrote:
I moved a full copy out of the company. Nathan knows the old survey system. If I cannot reach him, tell him M-12.
Nathan looked at Claire.
"You had this."
Claire was crying.
"I printed it."
"You knew M-12."
"I didn't know what it meant."
"You never told me."
"I thought Laura was angry."
"After she died?"
Claire's voice broke.
"After she died, Julian told me if the allegations came out, the company would collapse, the stock offering would be investigated, and you might go to prison."
"So you chose silence."
"I chose you."
"No."
Nathan folded the email.
"You chose the version of me you could protect without asking me."
Claire wiped her face.
"I was afraid."
"So was Victoria."
Claire looked at him sharply.
"I'm not Victoria."
"No. But fear keeps getting used as a permission slip in this family."
She flinched.
Nathan immediately regretted the cruelty.
But he did not withdraw the truth.
Claire whispered, "I forwarded Laura's email to Julian."
Nathan felt the last remaining piece move into place.
"When?"
"The afternoon before she died."
He stared.
"You warned him she had evidence."
"I asked him to explain."
"You told him about M-12?"
"No. I removed that line when I forwarded it."
Nathan believed her.
Then realized belief had become dangerous.
"Show me."
Claire produced the forwarded version.
M-12 was omitted.
That mattered.
Julian had known Laura copied records.
But not where.
Victoria had known Emily held the key.
Different pieces.
Different people.
One secret.
Nathan handed the papers to Samuel Reid and Detective Ruiz that evening.
Claire agreed to cooperate.
She would likely lose her board position.
Possibly face civil liability.
She accepted both.
For the first time, Nathan saw his sister without the armor of family legacy.
She looked older.
Smaller.
Human.
At nine that night, federal agents froze several Westbridge-linked accounts.
Julian held a press conference.
He accused Nathan of orchestrating a campaign to shift blame for his own misconduct.
Then he released another recording.
Nathan's voice.
"I don't want to know how you get it done. Just make Westbridge happen."
The clip went everywhere.
Nathan's lawyer called.
"Do not watch television."
Nathan was already watching.
Julian looked into the cameras.
"Nathan Mercer built the system. I followed his directives."
Emily appeared in the doorway.
"Dad?"
Nathan switched off the screen.
She looked frightened.
"Are police going to take you?"
He crouched.
"I don't know."
Her face crumpled.
Nathan held her.
For once, he did not promise safety he could not guarantee.
Instead, he said, "Whatever happens, I will tell the truth."
Emily whispered, "Even if it makes you look bad?"
May you like
Nathan closed his eyes.
"Especially then."
