Chapter 20 - No Way Back

Julian had not fled the country.

He had gone to the Mercer lake house.

Police learned that from a license-plate reader.

Nathan understood why immediately.

M-12.

Julian knew investigators had found something.

Perhaps Victoria told him through an intermediary.

Perhaps he guessed from the charges being prepared.

He was driving toward the one place connected to Laura's backup.

Ruiz ordered Nathan to remain in the city.

Nathan obeyed.

Barely.

He sat in a police conference room watching updates arrive.

Julian entered the lake-house property at 9:18 a.m.

He stayed seventeen minutes.

Then left.

Officers stopped him five miles away.

Inside his vehicle were no weapons.

No ledger.

No stolen evidence.

His lawyer arrived before questioning began.

Julian claimed he had gone to retrieve personal belongings from a property where he had once been a guest.

Absurd.

But not illegal by itself if he had not entered forcibly.

The lake house security system showed the front door opening with an old access code.

Julian still knew it.

Nathan had given it to him years ago.

Another piece of trust turned into access.

Police searched the survey room again.

Nothing appeared disturbed.

Then Ruiz noticed a camera.

Tiny.

New.

Mounted behind a ceiling vent.

Julian had installed it months earlier.

He had been watching M-12.

Waiting to see who opened it.

That explained how he knew.

The camera transmitted through a cellular connection registered to Calder Security.

Julian had seen detectives open the cabinet.

He knew Laura's evidence survived.

Now every secret had collided.

Prosecutors moved quickly.

Julian was arrested on federal fraud and obstruction charges first.

State charges related to Laura's death followed.

His attorneys requested immediate bond.

Victoria remained free under strict pretrial conditions because of her cooperation, though the child-abuse case continued separately.

Nathan was not charged with Westbridge fraud.

Not yet.

Federal prosecutors informed Reid that the investigation into Nathan's conduct remained open.

That uncertainty mattered.

Nathan could not simply become the hero of the story.

He might still face civil penalties.

Corporate lawsuits.

Regulatory sanctions.

His own decisions remained part of the disaster.

Then Julian made one final move from detention.

Through counsel, he demanded the emergency shareholder meeting proceed.

His allies on the board still supported the Cross Harbor merger.

If approved, it could shift control before regulators froze additional assets.

Claire said, "You need to stop it."

Nathan looked at her.

"I'm not chairman."

"You're still one of the largest shareholders."

"After the margin call."

"Still large enough."

Nathan attended the meeting remotely at first.

Then changed his mind.

He went in person.

The Mercer Systems boardroom was filled with lawyers.

Julian's empty chair sat at one end.

His counsel spoke for him.

Nathan sat opposite.

Reporters waited outside.

Claire attended as a witness, not a director.

The meeting became a war of documents.

Julian's lawyers argued Nathan had directed questionable payments.

Nathan's lawyers produced the second ledger.

The board saw Victoria's transfers.

Cross Harbor transfers.

Calder payments.

Then Nathan did something his advisers had not recommended.

He stood.

"I did not order these crimes."

The room remained silent.

"But I built the culture that let people hide them from me while using my authority."

Mara closed her eyes.

Nathan continued.

"I ignored my wife when she warned me because I valued speed over scrutiny. I signed documents I did not read. I treated ethical objections like delays. I was not entitled to remain chief executive even before this board removed me."

Several directors looked stunned.

Nathan's voice steadied.

"I am asking you to reject the merger not so I can return. I will not return. I am asking you to reject it because the man proposing it stole from this company and helped destroy my family."

Claire looked at him.

The vote began.

Before it finished, the boardroom doors opened.

Detective Ruiz entered with two federal agents.

Behind them walked Victoria.

Nathan had not seen her in person since the foyer.

She looked smaller.

Older.

Her eyes met his.

No apology came.

None would have mattered.

Ruiz addressed the board.

"We have obtained an additional warrant related to evidence believed to have been concealed by Mr. Cross."

Julian's lawyer stood.

"What evidence?"

Victoria answered.

"Laura's original phone."

Everyone looked at her.

Ruiz frowned.

"You surrendered the phone."

Victoria shook her head.

"I surrendered one phone."

Nathan's stomach dropped.

Victoria looked directly at him.

May you like

"Laura had two."

And the second one contained a video made the night before she died.
