Chapter 3 - The Man Behind the Money

Mark showed the message to Detective Dana Walsh before he showed anyone else.
Her face changed immediately.
“Do not respond.”
“I want to know who sent it.”
“So do I.”
“They threatened my daughter.”
“Yes, which is why you are not going home tonight.”
Mark looked through the glass of Lily’s hospital room.
Elena sat beside the crib while Lily slept under observation.
“You think someone else was involved.”
“I think your wife attempted to kill a six-month-old baby while eighteen and a half million dollars were tied to that child’s trust interest.”
“My wife is not entitled to Lily’s shares.”
“Then why did a lender accept them as collateral?”
Mark had no answer.
Walsh continued.
“Either Halcyon Capital was lied to, or someone with authority inside your company made the collateral look legitimate.”
Grant.
Mark hated how quickly the name came to him.
He called Ellison Dynamics’ general counsel, Rachel Kim.
It was nearly midnight.
Rachel answered on the second ring.
“Mark?”
“I need you at St. Matthew’s.”
“What happened?”
“Victoria was arrested.”
A pause.
“For what?”
“Attempted murder.”
Rachel did not speak for several seconds.
“I’m coming.”
When Rachel arrived, Mark showed her the trust papers.
She studied the signatures.
“This authorization is fake.”
“My signature?”
“Not just yours.”
She pointed lower.
“See this?”
JONATHAN REED, TRUST PROTECTOR.
Mark nodded.
Jonathan Reed had served as independent protector of the Ellison Family Trust for nine years.
Rachel zoomed in with her phone.
“Jonathan stopped using this signature block in 2023.”
“How do you know?”
“I drafted the updated trust administration protocol.”
Mark looked at her.
“So someone used an old document.”
“Yes.”
“Someone with access.”
Rachel’s expression was grim.
“Someone with very high-level access.”
Mark immediately called Grant again.
This time the call connected.
“Mark.”
Grant sounded tired.
Too calm.
“Where are you?”
“Home.”
“Victoria was arrested.”
“I heard.”
“How?”
Grant paused.
“The board grapevine.”
“At midnight?”
“News travels.”
Mark looked at Rachel.
She mouthed, Don’t accuse him yet.
Mark kept his voice neutral.
“I found a Halcyon loan agreement.”
Silence.
Then Grant said, “What kind of agreement?”
“You tell me.”
“Mark, I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“You visited my house while I was in Chicago.”
Another silence.
“Elena told you that?”
“Yes.”
Grant laughed softly.
“Elena notices everything.”
“What were you doing there?”
“Victoria asked me to review charity finances.”
“At eleven at night?”
“I don’t remember the time.”
“Interesting.”
“Mark, your baby was almost killed tonight. You’re angry. Don’t start inventing conspiracies.”
The sentence hit him.
Mark had not told Grant that Lily survived.
He had only said Victoria was arrested.
“How do you know what happened to Lily?”
Grant did not answer.
Mark’s voice went flat.
“How do you know?”
The call disconnected.
Rachel whispered, “That was your answer.”
Detective Walsh immediately began the process of obtaining emergency preservation orders for Grant’s phone and relevant company communications.
But Grant Mercer was not waiting.
At 1:17 a.m., Ellison Dynamics’ cybersecurity director called Mark.
“Sir, we have a serious problem.”
“What?”
“Someone accessed the executive document vault.”
“Who?”
“Grant Mercer’s credentials.”
Mark stood.
“When?”
“Eleven minutes ago.”
“What did he take?”
“We’re still determining that.”
“Lock him out.”
“We did.”
“Remote wipe his company devices.”
“He disabled management controls.”
Rachel cursed quietly.
Then another call arrived.
Board chairman Samuel Pike.
Mark answered.
“Samuel?”
“Mark, are you at the hospital?”
“Yes.”
“Grant just sent an emergency notice to the board.”
Mark’s stomach tightened.
“What notice?”
“He says you’re experiencing a psychological breakdown after an incident involving your daughter.”
Mark almost laughed.
“What?”
“He claims you assaulted Victoria.”
“I never touched her.”
“He says you are accusing senior executives of crimes without evidence.”
Mark looked at Rachel.
Grant was moving faster than they were.
Samuel continued.
“There’s more.”
“Say it.”
“Grant attached documents claiming you misappropriated twelve million dollars from the employee pension reserve.”
Mark went silent.
“That’s impossible.”
“I know what he’s alleging.”
“I never touched pension money.”
“Then someone created a very convincing paper trail.”
Rachel’s face changed.
“Ask him whose authorization is on the transfers.”
Mark did.
Samuel answered quietly.
“Yours.”
By sunrise, Lily was medically cleared.
But Mark’s life had changed completely.
His wife was in custody.
His CFO had disappeared.
His board had scheduled an emergency meeting.
And financial records now appeared to show that Mark himself had stolen millions from his employees.
As Elena helped fasten Lily into the infant carrier, Mark received one final message.
It came from Grant’s private number.
You should have let Victoria finish.
Then a photograph appeared.
Mark stared at it.
It showed Elena leaving a downtown bank six weeks earlier.
In her hand was an envelope.

Across the photograph, Grant had typed five words.
