Chapter 7 - The Dark House

Mark reached the mansion in twelve minutes.

Police arrived in nine.

It still felt too slow.

The estate gates stood open.

That alone was wrong.

Mark had ordered them locked.

Detective Walsh stopped him before he entered.

“Stay behind us.”

“My daughter is inside.”

“And if there’s an armed intruder, running in gets you killed.”

“Elena is inside.”

“We know.”

Officers moved through the front entrance.

The chandelier was dark.

Emergency lights cast dim strips across the marble.

Mark stared at the place where Elena had caught Lily.

The memory hit him like a physical blow.

Then a shout came from the east wing.

“CLEAR!”

Another.

“CLEAR!”

Mark’s phone rang.

Elena.

He answered immediately.

“Where are you?”

Her voice came in a whisper.

“Laundry service passage.”

“Is Lily with you?”

“Yes.”

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

He nearly collapsed.

“Stay there.”

“I heard someone upstairs.”

Police found Elena behind a locked steel service door.

She emerged holding Lily tightly.

The baby was asleep.

Mark took her and pressed his face against her blanket.

“You’re okay.”

Elena’s eyes were furious.

“Someone knew exactly how to shut down this house.”

Walsh approached.

“Not completely.”

She held up a small device.

A wireless jammer had been hidden inside the utility cabinet.

“Professional equipment.”

They searched the mansion.

No intruder remained.

But Victoria’s office had been disturbed.

The police seal was broken.

One evidence photograph showed exactly what was missing.

The original Halcyon loan file.

Rachel arrived shortly afterward.

“They came for the financial documents.”

Walsh shook her head.

“The police already imaged them.”

“They may not have known that.”

Mark looked upstairs.

“Or they wanted something else.”

They checked every room.

In the nursery, nothing appeared missing.

In Mark’s bedroom, drawers had been opened.

Then Elena noticed the family safe.

The biometric panel had scratches.

“They tried to get in.”

Mark opened it.

Passports.

Jewelry.

Property deeds.

Original copies of his father’s estate documents.

And one small sealed packet remained untouched.

Mark removed it.

The label was in his mother’s handwriting.

FOR MARK ONLY — IF I AM RIGHT ABOUT VICTORIA.

His hands went cold.

He had never seen it.

“Where was that?”

Elena whispered.

“Behind the deed file.”

Mark broke the seal.

Inside was a letter.

Mark,

If you are reading this because Victoria has finally given you reason to doubt her, then I failed to convince you while I was alive.

I hope I was wrong.

But if I was right, do not mistake charm for loyalty.

Victoria approached this family before she ever approached you.

Mark stopped reading.

Rachel stared.

“What does that mean?”

He continued.

I learned from Jonathan that Victoria Hale first contacted Ellison Dynamics through Grant Mercer more than a year before you met her at the foundation gala.

Mark remembered the gala.

Victoria had claimed they met by chance.

His mother’s letter continued.

She asked questions about your father’s descendant trust, voting structure, and marital estate planning long before she had any personal reason to care.

Mark felt sick.

Their first meeting.

Their first dinner.

Their entire romance.

Maybe none of it had been accidental.

At the bottom of the letter was a bank name.

First Continental.

Safe-deposit box 814.

Elena inhaled sharply.

“That’s the box.”

“The one you accessed?”

“Yes.”

“What was inside?”

“Your mother’s ledger and copies of correspondence.”

“Anything else?”

“I never opened the rest.”

Mark looked at Walsh.

“We need that box.”

The next morning, under police supervision, they went to First Continental.

Box 814 required Mark’s key and Jonathan Reed’s authorization.

Jonathan was missing.

But Evelyn’s estate records established Mark as successor access holder after death.

The bank’s counsel approved entry.

Inside were three things.

A handwritten ledger.

A photograph.

And a sealed audio recorder.

The photograph showed Victoria.

Grant.

And Helen Cross.

All three were seated at a private table inside the Boston Harbor Club.

The date on the back was three years earlier.

Nearly a year before Mark claimed to have first met Victoria.

The audio recorder contained Evelyn’s voice.

Weak but unmistakable.

“If you’re hearing this, Mark, I need you to understand something I could not prove while I was alive.”

Mark closed his eyes.

His mother continued.

“Victoria did not marry into our family because she loved you.”

A pause.

“She married you because Grant Mercer promised her control of it.”

May you like

Then Evelyn said something that made everyone in the bank vault look at Mark.

“And Helen Cross is the reason Grant believed he could deliver.”
