Chapter 14 - The Man Who Followed Elena

Owen Briggs was found in Costa Rica.

He had been living under his own name.

People who believed powerful families would protect them often became careless.

U.S. authorities detained him when he attempted to board a flight to Panama after receiving notice through his attorney.

Briggs negotiated quickly.

He faced potential kidnapping, obstruction, financial, and conspiracy charges.

He wanted leniency.

In exchange, he offered the timeline.

Elena discovered the trust scheme eleven months before she disappeared.

She copied account records.

Victor ordered Serena to monitor her.

When Elena contacted a banking regulator through outside counsel, Victor panicked.

Serena accessed Elena’s email and learned she was preparing to confront Marcus.

Victor accelerated the plan.

They created withdrawals making it appear Elena moved personal money.

They drafted letters suggesting she intended to leave.

Then Victor confronted her.

“He told her Marcus could be charged with bank fraud because of the guaranty,” Briggs said.

“Was that true?”

“I don’t know.”

“What about Ava?”

“Victor said he would use the guardianship paperwork if Elena went public.”

Briggs admitted driving Elena to the Wyoming ranch.

“Did she go willingly?”

“At the beginning.”

“What does that mean?”

“She agreed to leave Connecticut for a few days so Victor wouldn’t file anything against Marcus.”

“Did she agree to stay for months?”

“No.”

Briggs looked at the table.

“After she demanded to leave, Victor took her phone and passport.”

“Did you restrain her?”

“Twice.”

Marcus heard the statement later.

His jaw tightened.

Briggs continued.

Elena escaped.

At Jackson Hole Airport, Briggs and Serena intercepted her.

“What did Serena tell her?”

“She showed Elena the guardianship affidavit with Marcus’s signature.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“What else?”

“A news article draft Victor had arranged through a friendly reporter. It accused Elena of stealing from Ava’s trust.”

The threat was psychological.

Return home, and Victor would destroy Elena publicly, implicate Marcus financially, and seek control of Ava.

Elena surrendered.

They brought her east.

At Bedford, she began secretly recording.

Then something changed.

“She found proof Marcus’s signature pages had been reused,” Briggs said.

“She realized he probably didn’t knowingly sign the guardianship affidavit.”

“What did she do?”

“She decided to go to him.”

“When?”

“About ten months after she first disappeared.”

Marcus leaned forward.

Briggs gave the date.

It was the day before Ava’s fifth birthday.

Marcus remembered that birthday painfully.

Ava had waited beside the window, convinced Elena might come home.

Elena had apparently been trying.

“What stopped her?”

Briggs looked toward his attorney.

“Victor.”

“How?”

“He found the recordings.”

“What happened?”

“They argued.”

“Where?”

“Bedford.”

“Then?”

“Victor told me to bring the car.”

“Where did you take Elena?”

Briggs hesitated.

The prosecutor leaned forward.

“This is where your cooperation either becomes real or ends.”

Briggs swallowed.

“To the old Calder hangar at Dutchess County Airport.”

Marcus’s heart pounded.

“And then?”

“Victor wanted to move her again.”

“Where?”

“Canada.”

“Did she go?”

“No.”

“What happened?”

Briggs looked sick.

“She fought him.”

Silence filled the room.

“Was Serena there?”

“Yes.”

“Did Victor hurt Elena?”

Briggs closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Marcus stopped the recording.

“I need a minute.”

Naomi said nothing.

When he resumed, Briggs described Elena striking Victor with a flashlight after he grabbed her.

Victor shoved her.

She fell against a metal tow bar.

Her head struck the edge.

She collapsed.

“Was she alive?”

Briggs nodded.

“Yes.”

Marcus covered his mouth.

“What did you do?”

“Serena wanted an ambulance.”

That surprised him.

“Victor said no.”

Briggs’s voice shook.

“He said if Elena woke up, everything was over.”

“What happened next?”

Briggs requested another break.

He knew that answer would determine whether he ever lived outside prison again.

When questioning resumed, he gave prosecutors a location.

An abandoned Calder-owned construction parcel ninety miles north.

Marcus did not hear the rest that day.

Search teams went out before sunrise.

At noon, they found disturbed ground beneath a concrete foundation poured three years earlier.

By evening, human remains had been recovered.

A silver wedding band remained on one hand.
