Chapter 7 - What Serena Failed to Stop

Serena finally agreed to a recorded interview.
Not with Marcus.
With federal investigators.
Her attorney released only fragments through discovery.
The important admission was simple.
Yes, Serena had been at the Wyoming ranch.
Yes, Elena had stayed there.
No, Serena claimed Elena was not a prisoner.
“She could have left,” Serena said.
An investigator asked, “Then why was there an exterior lock?”
“For security.”
“Why was Elena’s passport in a hidden safe?”
“Victor controlled travel documents.”
“Why?”
Serena looked toward her attorney.
“He believed Elena was unstable.”
“Was she under a court-ordered guardianship?”
“No.”
“Was she facing criminal charges?”
“No.”
“Then what legal authority did Victor Calder have to hold her passport?”
Serena did not answer.
The investigator continued.
“Did Elena attempt to leave?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Several times.”
“Did you stop her?”
Serena’s attorney objected.
The agent waited.
Serena finally said, “Once.”
Marcus heard the recording in Naomi’s office.
His hands tightened.
The investigator asked how.
“I told her Marcus would be arrested if she went public.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Was that true?”
“I believed it might be.”
“Based on what?”
“His signature on the guaranty. Bank certifications. Victor said prosecutors would treat him as part of the fraud.”
“And Ava?”
Serena looked down.
“Victor controlled the trust.”
“That does not answer my question.”
Serena’s voice became quieter.
“He said if Marcus was indicted, he would petition for temporary guardianship of Ava.”
Marcus stood abruptly.
Naomi paused the audio.
“She knew.”
“She threatened Elena with taking Ava.”
“Yes.”
Marcus walked toward the window.
For three years Serena had helped him pack Ava’s lunches.
Attend school conferences.
Choose birthday cakes.
She had stepped into the exact maternal space Elena had been terrorized into leaving.
Naomi resumed.
The investigator asked:
“Did Elena escape?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“She took a ranch vehicle.”
“Did you pursue her?”
“No.”
“Did Victor?”
“He sent Owen Briggs.”
“Did Briggs find her?”
“I don’t know.”
The investigator placed a photograph in front of Serena.
She stopped breathing.
“What is that?”
The public transcript did not show the image.
But Naomi had obtained its description.
Airport surveillance.
Jackson Hole.
Elena entered a terminal fourteen hours after escaping the ranch.
She wore borrowed clothes.
She purchased a commercial ticket to New York using cash.
“She was coming home,” Marcus whispered.
Grace wiped her eyes.
Further airport footage showed Elena leaving the terminal before boarding.
Why?
A man approached her.
Owen Briggs.
They spoke for four minutes.
Elena appeared angry.
Then another person entered the frame.
Serena.
Marcus stared at the still photograph.
“You said you didn’t pursue her.”
Serena had lied.
The footage showed Serena standing between Elena and the security checkpoint.
Then Elena walked away with Briggs.
Not dragged.
Not restrained.
But defeated.
Naomi said, “We need to know what they told her.”
Grace looked at Marcus.
“Probably you.”
That evening, Ava found Marcus sorting old documents.
“Are you going to marry Serena?”
He looked up.
“No.”
“Ever?”
“No.”
Ava considered that.
“Good.”
Marcus almost smiled.
Then Ava asked, “Did Mom hate Grandpa?”
“I think she was afraid of him.”
“Are you afraid of him?”
Marcus wanted to say no.
Instead he answered honestly.
“Yes.”
Ava nodded as though that made more sense.
“What are you afraid he’ll do?”
“Take the company. Hurt people who work there. Make everyone think I’m part of what he did.”
“And me?”
Marcus’s throat tightened.
“Yes. I’m afraid he’ll hurt you.”
Ava looked toward the silver wing pin resting on the desk.
“He already did.”
Marcus stared at her.
She was right.
Victor had not needed to touch Ava personally.
He had spent three years constructing lies around her childhood.
The next morning, Grace received an anonymous courier envelope.
Inside was an old crew headset memory card.
No note.
The card contained a cockpit intercom recording from the Kestrel flight.
The pilots had apparently copied it before their equipment was replaced.
Elena’s voice could be heard near the rear cabin.
So could Victor’s.
And then Serena’s.
Marcus frowned.
“Serena said she wasn’t onboard.”
Grace listened again.
The intercom picked up Serena saying:
“She cannot go back to Marcus until he signs the trust amendment.”
Victor answered:
“Then make sure she understands that.”
Serena had not merely coordinated the flight.
May you like
She had traveled on it secretly.
And the official manifest had been altered to erase her.
