Chapter 1 - The Watch on the Floor

Seven-year-old Caleb Mercer was crying beside the stone fireplace when Vanessa slapped him across the face.
“Say you stole it.”
“I DIDN’T!”
His voice broke against the high timber ceiling of Blackwood Lodge.
Outside, a violent Colorado snowstorm buried the private mountain road beneath blowing white sheets. Inside, firelight flickered over polished wood, leather furniture, and the enormous Christmas-week lodge Daniel Mercer’s father had spent thirty years building.
Vanessa did not care that Caleb was trembling.
She lifted a glass of cold water.
Mia moved before she realized she was moving.
The fourteen-year-old took one step from the shadow beside the staircase.
Then stopped.
If Vanessa saw the black smartphone hidden low against Mia’s gray hoodie, she would take it.
So Mia stayed still.
And recorded.
Vanessa threw the water.
Caleb gasped as it struck his face and soaked the collar of his sweater.
“Your father will believe me before he believes a thief,” Vanessa said.
Caleb wiped his eyes.
“I didn’t take Grandpa’s watch.”
Vanessa held up the empty brown leather case.
The vintage Patek Philippe had belonged to Arthur Mercer, Daniel’s late father.
It had been appraised for more than $180,000.
Its financial value mattered.
Its emotional value mattered more.
Arthur had worn it every day for forty-two years.
Then the front door opened.
Wind exploded into the foyer.
“Dad!”
Daniel Mercer stepped inside carrying snow on his shoulders.
He stopped.
His seven-year-old son was soaked and crying.
His fourteen-year-old daughter stood between Caleb and Vanessa.
Vanessa held Arthur’s empty watch case.
“What happened?”
Vanessa answered instantly.
“Caleb stole your father’s watch.”
Caleb shook his head desperately.
“She’s making me say I did!”
Daniel looked at his wife.
Vanessa lifted the case.
“It disappeared this afternoon.”
Then Mia stepped forward.
“No.”
Vanessa snapped toward her.
“Stay out of this.”
Mia did not move.
“I saw you hide it.”
For the first time, Vanessa’s confidence cracked.
Daniel saw it.
Vanessa crossed quickly toward the burgundy winter coat hanging beside the study door.
She yanked it from the hook.
Something slipped from an inside pocket.
CLINK.
The gold watch struck the polished floor.
Nobody moved.
Caleb stared.
Daniel slowly bent and picked it up.
Arthur’s initials—A.M.—were still engraved on the back.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“It was in your coat.”
“I was keeping it safe.”
Mia raised her phone.
“No.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Mia. Give me that phone.”
Daniel immediately stepped between them.
“Play it.”
Mia pressed the screen.
The video showed Vanessa removing the watch from its display case earlier that afternoon.
Then placing it inside her burgundy coat.
Her recorded voice followed.
“Once Caleb admits it, Daniel will finally agree he needs somewhere stricter.”
Daniel looked up.
“Somewhere stricter?”
Caleb quietly grabbed his sleeve.
Another voice came through the phone.
A man.
“And Mia?”
Vanessa’s recorded answer made the room go cold.
“She won’t be a problem after Caleb is gone.”
Mia slowly lowered the phone.
Daniel turned toward Vanessa.
“You were planning to remove both my children.”
Vanessa looked toward Daniel’s private study.
Only for a second.
But he saw it.
“Rewind,” Daniel said.
Mia replayed the video.
This time Daniel noticed Vanessa lifting the padding inside Arthur’s empty watch case and slipping something beneath it.
He took the case.
Pulled out the lining.
A tiny silver key fell into his palm.
Vanessa panicked.
“Put that back.”
Daniel looked toward his study.
“What does it open?”
She said nothing.
He walked to the wall safe hidden behind an old ski photograph.
The silver key fit.
CLICK.
Inside were files Daniel had never placed there.
Caleb Mercer.
Residential-school placement.
Psychological intake forms.
Temporary guardianship petition.
Mia Mercer.
A separate file.
Petition requesting emergency change of residence.
Statements describing Mia as “defiant, manipulative, and potentially dangerous to her younger sibling.”
Legal forms were already dated.
Some for the following Monday.
Daniel stared at Vanessa.
“You had this ready before the watch disappeared.”
Vanessa stood frozen.
Caleb moved closer to Daniel.
Mia gripped her phone.
Daniel reached deeper into the safe.
Under the documents lay an old photograph.
Vanessa stood outside Blackwood Lodge months earlier beside a man in a dark coat.
His face was partly turned away.
Caleb whispered, “Dad… who is he?”
Vanessa lost control.
“Don’t turn that photo over.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?”
Behind him, Mia’s recording continued.
The unknown man’s voice said:
“Once both children are gone, the lodge becomes ours.”
Daniel froze.
Vanessa’s face collapsed.
He turned the photograph over.
A name was written across the back.
VICTOR LANG — OCTOBER 14
Daniel’s blood turned cold.
Victor Lang was not a stranger.
He had been Arthur Mercer’s lawyer.
His business partner.
The ten-percent owner of Blackwood Lodge Holdings.
And after Arthur’s death, Daniel had trusted him more than almost anyone alive.
Vanessa whispered, “Daniel…”
He lifted his eyes.
“What did Victor promise you?”
She said nothing.
Daniel looked toward Mia.
“Save that recording somewhere she can’t reach.”
“I already uploaded it.”
For the first time that evening, Daniel almost smiled.
Then the lodge phone rang.
Vanessa looked at it.
Fear appeared in her eyes.
Daniel answered.
Victor Lang’s voice came through.
“Daniel, thank God. I heard there’s trouble at the lodge.”
Daniel stared directly at Vanessa.
“You heard fast.”
Silence.
Then Victor said, “What happened?”
Daniel looked at Arthur’s watch in one hand.
The silver key in the other.
And the photograph linking his wife to the man who controlled part of his family’s property.
May you like
“You tell me, Victor.”
The line went dead.
