Chapter 4 - The First Courtroom

Vanessa filed first.

Daniel should not have been surprised.

He was anyway.

Her petition requested temporary access to the marital home, preservation of financial assets, and protection from what she described as Daniel’s “escalating intimidation.”

She did not ask for custody of Caleb or Mia.

She was their stepmother.

Their mother, Emily Mercer, had died six years earlier from cancer.

Vanessa had married Daniel three years after Emily’s death.

Instead Vanessa framed herself as a concerned caregiver who had attempted to address Caleb’s “behavioral deterioration.”

Daniel felt sick reading it.

She described the watch incident as a misunderstanding.

According to Vanessa, she had found the watch and placed it in her coat for safekeeping.

Caleb then became hysterical.

Daniel arrived, accepted Mia’s “edited recording,” and threatened Vanessa.

The slap was described as a “single corrective touch.”

The water became an attempt to help Caleb calm down.

Rachel read the affidavit.

“She threw a glass of water in his face and turned it into hydration?”

Lauren said, “Sarcasm won’t help.”

“It helps me.”

Daniel’s own emergency family filing asked the court to prevent Vanessa from contacting the children directly while the investigation continued and to give him exclusive temporary occupancy of Blackwood Lodge.

The hearing took place in Eagle County.

Vanessa entered wearing navy blue.

No burgundy coat.

No arrogance.

She looked fragile.

Daniel hated how effective it was.

Her lawyer played a clip.

Daniel shouting during an argument six months earlier.

“Stop undermining me in front of my children!”

The clip ended.

Daniel whispered to Lauren, “She had just told Caleb his mother would be ashamed of him.”

“Was that recorded?”

“No.”

“Then do not interrupt.”

Mia’s video changed the hearing.

The judge watched Vanessa plant Arthur’s watch in her coat.

He listened to Vanessa pressure Caleb to confess.

He listened to the reference to sending him “somewhere stricter.”

Then he heard the unknown male voice.

Vanessa’s attorney objected to assuming it was Victor.

Lauren agreed that identity had not yet been formally authenticated.

She did not need to overreach.

The judge looked at Vanessa.

“Did you strike Caleb?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“I touched his face during an emotional moment.”

“Did you throw water?”

“He was escalating.”

“Did you tell him to confess to taking the watch?”

“I believed he had.”

The judge looked at the video still showing Vanessa placing the watch in her own coat.

“Why?”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“I found it earlier.”

“And did not tell him?”

“I was trying to teach him honesty.”

Daniel stared at her.

The judge did too.

Temporary orders followed.

Daniel received exclusive occupancy of Blackwood Lodge.

Vanessa could retrieve personal belongings under supervision.

No direct contact with Caleb or Mia pending further order.

The court made no final findings.

Outside, Daniel expected relief.

Instead Victor Lang stood in the hallway.

Daniel stopped.

Victor looked exactly as he had at Arthur’s funeral.

Silver hair.

Expensive charcoal suit.

A face Daniel had trusted since childhood.

“You shouldn’t be here,” Daniel said.

Victor remained calm.

“Vanessa asked me to testify regarding Caleb’s school issues.”

Daniel stared.

“You’re the man on Mia’s recording.”

Victor smiled slightly.

“Prove it.”

Mia stepped closer to Daniel.

Victor looked at her phone.

“There are serious privacy questions surrounding secret recordings.”

Mia’s face tightened.

Daniel stepped between them.

“Don’t speak to her.”

Victor’s eyes moved to him.

“You are becoming exactly as volatile as the documents describe.”

Daniel almost moved forward.

Almost.

Then Mia quietly grabbed his sleeve.

The same way Caleb had at the lodge.

Daniel stopped.

Victor noticed.

His smile disappeared.

Daniel said, “You wanted me angry.”

Victor said nothing.

“You needed Caleb frightened, Mia discredited, and me reactive.”

Still nothing.

Daniel leaned closer.

“You’re going to have to find a new plan.”

Victor walked away.

Back at Rachel’s house that evening, Marcus called.

“We confirmed something.”

“What?”

“The second beneficial owner of North Ridge.”

Daniel stood.

“Who?”

Marcus paused.

“Vanessa.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“How much?”

“Forty percent.”

“And Eleanor?”

“Fifty.”

“That’s ninety.”

“The remaining ten is held through Lang Advisory.”

Victor.

Perfect symmetry.

North Ridge itself was owned fifty percent by the replacement fiduciary, forty by Daniel’s wife, and ten by Victor.

Together, they planned to control the children’s fifty percent of Blackwood Lodge Holdings long enough to sell the lodge to themselves.

Daniel sat down.

Then Marcus added, “There’s another problem.”

“Of course there is.”

“Blackwood Lodge has a loan covenant.”

“I know.”

“Victor’s ten-percent interest gives him certain minority protections.”

“What kind?”

Marcus pulled up the operating agreement.

An extraordinary refinancing required seventy-five-percent approval.

Daniel effectively controlled ninety through his own and the children’s units.

But if he lost custodianship of the children’s fifty, he would control only forty.

Victor could block refinancing.

“Why does that matter now?”

“Because the lodge’s $12 million mortgage matures in six weeks.”

Daniel froze.

He had assumed renewal was routine.

Marcus continued.

“Victor has already notified the bank that he objects to extension.”

The scheme had a deadline.

May you like

They were not simply trying to gain control someday.

They were manufacturing a loan crisis now.
