Chapter 2 - The Groom Comes Upstairs

Madeline canceled the transaction first.

Not the wedding.

The transaction.

Her thumb trembled as she rejected the $28 million authorization in Hartwell Collection’s secure banking portal.

A warning appeared.

SECONDARY APPROVAL ALREADY COMPLETED.

Approver:

Evan Reed — Strategic Finance Consultant.

Madeline stared.

Evan had consulting access to analysis.

Not treasury approval.

“Emma.”

“Yes?”

“Keep filming.”

Helen moved beside her.

“What is it?”

“He approved the transfer.”

Helen’s face changed.

“Can he?”

“No.”

Rachel laughed once.

Too quickly.

“Then obviously it’s a system error.”

Madeline looked at her.

“You really need new lines.”

Someone pounded on the bridal-suite door.

“Madeline!”

Evan.

Helen inhaled sharply.

Madeline’s entire body reacted to his voice.

For two years, that voice had meant home.

Late-night phone calls.

Sunday mornings.

Arguments that ended with apologies.

The proposal on a private terrace in Florence.

Now it meant a $28 million transfer she had never authorized.

“Open the door,” Evan called.

Madeline said, “Emma, stand where you can see both of us.”

Emma nodded.

Madeline unlocked the door.

Evan entered wearing a black tuxedo.

His boutonniere was perfectly straight.

For a moment he smiled automatically.

Then he saw Rachel’s face.

The emerald dress.

The torn lace on the floor.

Madeline without her engagement ring.

His smile vanished.

“What happened?”

Madeline held up Rachel’s phone.

“Interesting question.”

Evan looked at Rachel.

It was quick.

Less than a second.

But Madeline saw it.

Fear.

“Why do you have her phone?”

“Why are you calling her?”

“Because she disappeared.”

“During our wedding.”

“She’s helping coordinate.”

“Really?”

Madeline played the voicemail.

Evan’s face changed slowly.

Not guilt.

Calculation.

When it ended, he exhaled.

“You’re misunderstanding this.”

Emma whispered, “There it is again.”

Evan looked at her.

“Turn that off.”

“No,” Madeline said.

“Madeline, this is private.”

“So was our engagement.”

He stepped closer.

“The transfer is legitimate.”

“Northstar?”

“Yes.”

“What is it?”

“An acquisition vehicle.”

“For what acquisition?”

“I was going to explain after the ceremony.”

Madeline almost laughed.

“You were moving twenty-eight million dollars before telling me?”

“It was time-sensitive.”

“With forged authority?”

“Nothing was forged.”

She opened the banking portal.

“You approved it.”

“I had delegated authority.”

“No, you didn’t.”

“Yes, I did.”

“Show me.”

Evan hesitated.

Rachel looked away.

Madeline felt something inside her harden.

“Show me the document.”

Evan lowered his voice.

“Not here.”

“Why?”

“Because three hundred people are downstairs.”

“They’re waiting for me to marry you.”

“Yes.”

“And you’re worried about embarrassment?”

“I’m worried about you blowing up our lives over a misunderstanding.”

Helen stepped forward.

“You are speaking to my daughter as if she caused this.”

Evan looked irritated.

“Helen, please.”

“No.”

Madeline had rarely heard her mother use that tone.

Helen continued.

“You asked me six months ago to trust you with her.”

Evan’s jaw tightened.

“This is business.”

“You made it personal when you used your wedding day to move her company’s money.”

Rachel suddenly said, “It wasn’t supposed to go through today.”

Everyone turned.

Evan’s head snapped toward her.

“Rachel.”

She ignored him.

“It was supposed to queue.”

“What?” Madeline asked.

Rachel looked terrified.

“Nothing.”

Evan stepped toward her.

“Stop talking.”

Madeline saw it.

Not lovers speaking.

Co-conspirators.

Rachel actually shrank from him.

Madeline said, “Emma, did you get that?”

“Every word.”

Evan turned on Madeline.

“You are making this worse.”

Madeline felt a strange chill.

Rachel’s phrase.

The dress was supposed to delay her.

Evan’s voicemail.

Keep her upstairs.

Now this.

She looked at the time.

2:47 p.m.

The ceremony had been scheduled for 2:30.

“When was the transfer supposed to release?”

Evan said nothing.

Madeline checked.

Settlement time:

3:00 p.m.

Thirteen minutes.

She called Hartwell’s controller, Daniel Wexler.

“Freeze all outgoing wires.”

Evan grabbed her wrist.

“Don’t.”

The room exploded.

Emma shouted.

Helen screamed.

Security guards rushed through the doorway.

Madeline stared at Evan’s hand around her wrist.

He released her immediately.

“That was not—”

“Touch me again.”

Her voice was almost calm.

“I dare you.”

Evan stepped back.

Daniel answered.

“Madeline?”

“Freeze every outgoing corporate wire above fifty thousand dollars. Now.”

“Why?”

“Potential fraud.”

Evan swore.

Daniel went silent.

“Madeline?”

“Do it.”

“I’ll call the bank.”

“And revoke Evan Reed’s access to every Hartwell system.”

Evan’s face changed.

“You can’t do that.”

“I just did.”

He looked at Rachel.

Then at Madeline.

“You don’t understand what you’ve stopped.”

“Then explain.”

Silence.

Madeline heard music downstairs.

The string quartet had begun playing the processional for the third time.

Guests were whispering.

Phones were appearing.

Something beautiful was collapsing beneath them.

Madeline looked at the man she had nearly married.

“Is Northstar yours?”

“No.”

Rachel whispered, “Technically.”

Evan spun toward her.

“Shut up.”

Madeline stepped closer.

“Technically what?”

Rachel swallowed.

“Northstar is controlled by a Nevada trust.”

“Whose trust?”

Rachel stared at Evan.

Evan said, “Don’t.”

That one word did it.

May you like

Rachel looked at Madeline.

“His.”
