Chapter 8 - The Secret Claire Had Kept

Richard’s lawyers released Daniel’s phone records.

At 8:14 p.m. on the night Daniel died, Claire had called him.

The call lasted eleven minutes.

At 8:31, she sent a text.

DON’T COME HOME UNTIL YOU DECIDE WHO YOUR FAMILY IS.

Claire stared at the message displayed on television.

She remembered it.

She had never told investigators because no one asked about their marriage beyond routine questions.

Daniel and Claire had fought that night.

A real fight.

An ugly one.

She had believed Daniel was having an affair.

Victoria had shown her hotel receipts.

Messages.

A photograph of Daniel entering an apartment building with Nora Ellis.

Claire now understood the apartment.

Mia had been there.

At the time, she believed her husband was betraying her while she grieved their daughter.

Daniel refused to explain.

He kept saying:

Trust me until tomorrow.

Claire could not.

She told him not to come home.

Hours later he died.

For nine years, Claire blamed herself.

Richard knew.

He had been the person who came to her house after police notified her.

He had held her while she confessed the argument.

Now he weaponized it.

The press was vicious.

DID CLAIRE BENNETT SEND HUSBAND INTO DEADLY STORM?

Rebecca sat across from her.

“You did nothing legally wrong.”

“I told him not to come home.”

“You did not sabotage his car.”

“I sent him away.”

“No.”

Rebecca’s voice sharpened.

“You had an argument. He chose where to drive. Someone else apparently tampered with the vehicle.”

Claire covered her face.

Mia heard about it anyway.

Children always did.

She asked that evening.

“Were you mad at Dad when he died?”

Claire considered lying.

Then looked at her daughter.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I thought he was lying to me.”

“He was.”

Claire blinked.

Mia continued.

“He didn’t tell you about me.”

“That’s true.”

“So you were both mad.”

“Yes.”

“Does that mean you killed him?”

Claire stared.

“No.”

“Then why does TV say it?”

Claire almost laughed.

“Because TV needs better hobbies.”

Mia smiled.

The shame did not disappear.

But it changed shape.

Claire could regret her words without accepting responsibility for Daniel’s death.

That was new.

The forensic audit continued.

VBG Strategic Services payments traced into three destinations.

Victoria’s private investment account.

A trust for Richard’s nephew.

And an offshore company in the Cayman Islands called Marrow Bay Holdings.

Marrow Bay held options to acquire Bennett Meridian shares after a “qualifying governance event.”

The qualifying event was Claire signing Richard’s agreement.

Richard and Victoria had built a hidden ownership vehicle.

If Claire had signed, Marrow Bay could have acquired another fourteen percent of the company at a deeply discounted valuation.

Combined with Richard’s eight percent and Victoria’s seventeen percent, they would have controlled thirty-nine percent directly.

With the governance trust, they would have controlled far more.

Claire’s inheritance would have funded her own displacement.

Marcus stared at the structure.

“This took years.”

“How many?”

“At least seven.”

Claire felt sick.

Richard had begun dating her six years ago.

Their romance started after the financial architecture already existed.

“Was our relationship part of it?”

Marcus did not answer.

He did not need to.

Then investigators traced the threatening school photograph.

It had not been sent from Richard’s phone.

He had told the truth about that.

The message originated from a prepaid device purchased by Adrian Glass.

Victoria’s adviser.

Claire stared.

“Victoria threatened Mia.”

“Likely.”

“Richard didn’t.”

“Not through this message.”

That distinction mattered.

Even now.

Claire had publicly blamed Richard for something he apparently had not done.

Rebecca made her issue a correction.

Claire hated it.

She did it anyway.

I previously stated that Richard Cole sent a threatening photograph of my daughter. Forensic information now indicates the message originated from a device purchased by another individual. I retract that specific allegation.

The correction weakened Claire publicly.

It strengthened her credibility legally.

She began understanding the difference.

Later that day Neil Ransom’s attorney contacted prosecutors again.

Neil would cooperate.

He admitted modifying Daniel’s stability-control module.

He claimed Richard had ordered it.

Claire stopped breathing when Rebecca told her.

“What exactly did Richard say?”

“We don’t know yet.”

“Did he say kill Daniel?”

“Claire.”

“I need to know.”

Rebecca sighed.

“According to the proffer summary, Richard told Neil he wanted Daniel’s vehicle to ‘lose control convincingly’ on a mountain road.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Murder.

Or something very close.

“Was Victoria involved?”

“Neil never met her.”

Claire looked toward the Bennett seal photograph.

Richard had carried Victoria’s seal.

Victoria funded his networks.

One final connection remained missing.

Then Harrison received a package.

No return address.

Inside was the original document shown in Daniel’s video.

It bore Victoria’s embossed seal.

And Richard’s signature.

The title:

EMERGENCY SUCCESSION RESOLUTION.

It declared Daniel Mercer mentally unstable, barred him from accessing company records, and authorized Richard to take control of his internal investigation files.

At the bottom was another signature.

Samuel Harrison’s.

Claire stared at him.

“You signed this.”

Harrison looked like he might be sick.

“Yes.”

“Before Daniel died?”

“Yes.”

“You helped them isolate him.”

“Yes.”

Claire stepped backward.

Every ally was compromised.

Every person asking for forgiveness had participated somewhere.

Harrison whispered, “There is something else.”

Claire laughed without humor.

“Of course there is.”

He looked at her.

“Daniel came to see me after I signed it.”

“And?”

“He said if anything happened to him, you should never trust anyone whose name appeared on that page.”

Claire looked down.

Richard Cole.

Victoria Bennett.

Samuel Harrison.

Three names.

One conspiracy.

And the man helping Claire now had been part of it.
