Chapter 8 - Thirty Hard Drives

The storage unit transformed the case.
Not immediately.
The police needed warrants.
Chain of custody mattered.
Privacy mattered.
Everything Rachel wanted to happen instantly moved at the speed of law.
Three days felt like three years.
Meanwhile, the Hale board war intensified.
Northbridge's records showed millions transferred through consulting agreements, maintenance contracts, and inflated renovation invoices.
Naomi found something worse.
“Someone forged your approval.”
Rachel stared at the electronic signature on a 2024 vendor authorization.
It looked perfect.
Because it was hers.
Copied from an older document.
“Can we prove that?”
“The metadata shows the signature image was imported.”
Rachel leaned back.
“By whom?”
“User credentials belong to Julian's office.”
Rachel's chest tightened.
Julian denied personally applying it.
“I delegated document processing.”
“To whom?”
“My executive assistant.”
“Who?”
He hesitated.
Rachel already knew.
“Clara?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
“Derek Voss.”
Clara's son had worked at Hale Development.
Rachel almost laughed.
“When?”
“For seven months.”
“Why didn't I know?”
“You weren't in daily operations.”
There it was again.
The absence everyone had used against her.
She had believed stepping back to raise Sophie was a choice she could safely make because people she loved were protecting what her father built.
Instead, they had filled the space she left.
Derek had been hired as a document specialist.
He had access to signatures.
Invoices.
Vendor setup.
Email routing.
And Julian had approved him.
“Did you know he was Clara's son?”
Julian said, “Yes.”
Rachel looked away.
“Of course.”
He slammed his hand on the table.
“Stop.”
She turned.
“You want me to stop?”
“I hired him because my mother asked. I did not hire a criminal conspiracy.”
“You never ask questions when your mother asks for something.”
“That isn't fair.”
“It is exactly fair.”
Julian's face tightened.
“You think I haven't figured out what she did?”
“What did she do?”
“She used me.”
Rachel said nothing.
Julian looked suddenly older.
“My whole life, she told me the Mercers had been humiliated by men like your father. She said our family built half of Westchester before his company existed.”
“Your mother's resentment isn't a defense.”
“I know.”
“She convinced you taking control of Hale was restoration.”
Julian didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
Rachel whispered, “You were trying to avenge your family through my marriage.”
“No.”
“Weren't you?”
“I loved you.”
“Past tense?”
His eyes filled with something painful.
“I still do.”
Rachel almost hated him more for saying it.
Love was easier to survive when it was absent.
Love mixed with betrayal was poison.
The storage-unit warrants produced a breakthrough.
Detective Bell asked Rachel and Laura to come to the precinct.
He placed printed stills on the table.
Clara.
Inside Rachel's kitchen.
Inside Sophie's playroom.
Inside the pantry.
Some footage showed Clara placing cameras.
Some showed Derek installing them.
And one showed Eleanor Mercer entering the house while Rachel and Julian were away.
Rachel stared at her mother-in-law.
“What is she carrying?”
Bell enlarged the image.
A blue folder.
Timestamp: eleven months earlier.
Rachel remembered that week.
She and Julian had taken Sophie to Disney World.
Clara had stayed behind.
Bell continued.
“We found footage of Mrs. Mercer accessing the study.”
“My study?”
“Your husband's.”
Another clip.
Eleanor opened Julian's safe.
Removed papers.
Photographed them.
Returned them.
Rachel looked at Julian, who had been asked to attend separately.
His face drained.
“She was spying on me too.”
Rachel turned.
For the first time, Julian looked like what Rachel had felt for days.
Violated.
Bell said, “We also found files that appear to be original camera footage.”
Rachel could barely breathe.
“Sophie?”
“Yes.”
He hesitated.
“Some are disturbing.”
Rachel's fingers curled into her palms.
“Did Clara hurt her?”
Bell looked at her.
“We have video of Ms. Voss slapping Sophie on three different dates.”
Rachel closed her eyes.
“And the pantry?”
“Multiple incidents.”
Rachel covered her mouth.
Bell waited.
“There's more.”
Of course there was.
“There are audio recordings of Clara instructing Sophie to say specific things.”
“What things?”
“That Mommy screams. Mommy sleeps all day. Mommy drinks. Daddy is afraid of Mommy.”
Julian stood abruptly.
Bell said, “Sit down.”
Julian obeyed.
Rachel looked at him.
“You gave her permission to document me.”
He couldn't meet her eyes.
“And she trained our daughter to fear me.”
“I didn't know.”
“No. You just created the opportunity.”
Bell then placed another photograph on the table.
Clara beside Eleanor.
They were meeting in a restaurant.
The photo came from Clara's own files.
On the back, someone had written:
PHASE 2 AFTER MONDAY.
Rachel asked, “What was Phase Two?”
Bell shook his head.
“We don't know.”
Julian whispered, “The refinancing.”
Rachel turned.
He continued.
“Monday was the refinancing vote.”
“What happens after?”
He looked terrified.
“My mother would control Northbridge's payoff.”
“How much?”
“Under the proposed refinancing, Hale would pay Northbridge twelve million dollars to retire bridge obligations.”
Rachel stared.
“So Eleanor gets twelve million.”
“Yes.”
“And then?”
Julian rubbed his face.
“The board would be asked to approve a new executive structure.”
Rachel's voice turned cold.
“Removing me.”
“As chair.”
“And replacing me with you.”
“Yes.”
Rachel stood.
“This was a coup.”
Julian said nothing.
Rachel walked toward the door.
Bell stopped her.
“One more thing.”
She turned.
He slid a transcript across the table.
A conversation from Clara's storage drive.
Eleanor's voice:
Rachel needs to be frightened, not destroyed.
Clara:
And the girl?
Eleanor:
Children are leverage. Nothing more.
Rachel's blood went cold.
Bell pointed to the next line.
Clara:
What if Rachel still won't sign?
Eleanor:
Then we make sure Sophie becomes Julian's problem instead of hers.
Rachel looked up.
“What does that mean?”
Bell said, “We don't know.”
But Julian did.
She saw it.
“Tell me.”
His voice was barely audible.
“My mother asked me two months ago whether our postnuptial agreement had a custody provision.”
Rachel stared.
A new horror unfolded.
“You discussed taking Sophie from me.”
“I said no.”
“But you discussed it.”
“She asked.”
“And you answered.”
Rachel stepped away from him.
Julian whispered, “Rachel.”
“No.”
She left.
That night, Sophie completed her forensic interview.
The specialist emerged after nearly ninety minutes.
Rachel stood.
“How did she do?”
“She was brave.”
Rachel's eyes burned.
“Did she tell you what happened?”
“Yes.”
The specialist paused.
“And there is one detail you need to prepare yourself for.”
Rachel swallowed.
“What?”
“Sophie says Clara wasn't always alone when she punished her.”
Rachel's heart stopped.
“Who else was there?”
May you like
The specialist looked toward the closed interview-room door.
“Sophie says Grandma watched.”
