Chapter 14 - Why the Box Was Under Olivia's Roses

Olivia did not go alone.

She went with Detective Grant nearby and Marcus aware of the meeting.

Eleanor was furious.

“You brought police?”

“I learned from experience.”

They stood in Rosehaven's sunroom.

Olivia asked, “Why my roses?”

Eleanor smiled faintly.

“Ask Diane.”

“I’m asking you.”

“Diane buried the box two years ago.”

Olivia frowned.

Two years.

Not decades.

“Why?”

“Because she stole it from me.”

Olivia stared.

Eleanor explained.

After Richard's death, she found the brass box in his hidden cabinet.

She kept it in her private safe.

Diane stole it when she discovered Eleanor planned to destroy some contents.

Then Diane panicked.

She needed somewhere safe.

Olivia had recently begun renovating the neglected south garden.

Excavation crews were scheduled to remove old soil.

Diane assumed the bed would later become permanent landscaping nobody would disturb for years.

She buried it deep before the roses arrived.

“Why not give it to Marcus?” Olivia asked.

“Because Diane is a coward.”

“Like Richard?”

Eleanor's face tightened.

Olivia continued.

“And like you.”

Eleanor stepped closer.

“Be very careful.”

“Why? Will another employee hit me?”

“Diane acted on her own.”

“Yes. She did.”

Eleanor seemed surprised by Olivia's refusal to shift responsibility.

“Then what do you want from me?”

“The truth.”

Eleanor laughed.

“Truth is the luxury of people who don't have anything to lose.”

Olivia looked around Rosehaven.

“That's what everyone in this house keeps saying before they lie.”

Eleanor turned away.

Then spoke.

“I knew Diane buried it somewhere.”

“But not where.”

“No.”

“When did you find out?”

“Three weeks before you dug it up.”

Olivia went still.

“How?”

“A landscaper mentioned Diane repeatedly asking whether the south bed would be disturbed.”

“So you ordered Diane to retrieve it.”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell her to attack me?”

“No.”

Olivia believed her.

That mattered.

Eleanor continued.

“I told her to remove the box before you found it.”

“And when she failed?”

“She panicked.”

“You've spent decades teaching people panic is useful.”

Eleanor looked at her.

“You think you're different?”

Olivia's back ached.

She thought of calling the reporter against legal advice.

Digging through private records.

Pushing Marcus when he needed space.

“No.”

That answer surprised Eleanor.

Olivia continued.

“But I am trying to be.”

Then she asked the real question.

“Why didn't you destroy the box yourself?”

Eleanor's expression changed.

“I couldn't.”

“Sentimental?”

“No.”

“Insurance?”

Silence.

Olivia understood.

“Against Calvin.”

Eleanor finally sat.

The box contained evidence implicating Eleanor.

But also Calvin.

If he ever betrayed her, she needed leverage.

She had preserved the thing that could destroy her because it could destroy him too.

Mutually assured ruin.

“Did Calvin know you kept it?”

“No.”

“Then why move nine million dollars after I found it?”

Eleanor stared toward the garden.

“Because once Calvin learned the box was exposed, I knew he would protect himself.”

“By blaming you.”

“Yes.”

For the first time, Eleanor sounded less like a mastermind.

More like one conspirator realizing her partner had always been willing to sacrifice her.

The same pattern again.

Everyone controlling everyone.

Olivia stood.

“One last question.”

Eleanor looked up.

“Did you ever intend to tell Marcus about Anna?”

Long silence.

“No.”

“Even if Anna died?”

“No.”

“Even if you were dying?”

Eleanor's eyes filled.

“No.”

Olivia nodded.

That answer destroyed the last charitable explanation.

Fear may have begun the lie.

Control sustained it.

As Olivia left, Eleanor said, “He'll never love Anna the way he loves me.”

Olivia stopped.

“I don't think Anna is asking him to.”

Eleanor's face cracked.

That was what she had never understood.

Love did not have to be won by eliminating competition.

Outside, Marcus waited beside the car.

“How did it go?”

“She admitted she never planned to tell you.”

His face hardened.

“I'm sorry.”

He nodded.

Then Olivia told him about Calvin.

They brought the information to investigators.

It triggered a search of Calvin's private archive.

Inside was a document nobody expected.

A draft immunity agreement.

Prepared six months earlier.

Calvin had been planning to cooperate with prosecutors before the brass box emerged.

Against Eleanor.

May you like

The conspiracy had been collapsing before Olivia ever touched the shovel.

And Eleanor might already have known.
