Chapter 2 - The Original Signature

The first police cruiser arrived in six minutes.

The ambulance arrived in nine.

Richard was still insisting nothing had happened when Officer Serena Hall walked into the kitchen and saw Claire’s cheek.

“Who struck you?”

Claire pointed.

“My father-in-law.”

Richard raised both hands.

“She came at me with a skillet.”

“After he shoved me into the counter.”

Officer Hall looked at Ethan.

“You witnessed this?”

Ethan hesitated.

Margaret spoke first.

“My son is extremely upset.”

Hall did not look at her.

“I asked your son.”

Ethan’s mouth moved.

No sound came.

Claire felt something inside her marriage die with that silence.

The second officer separated Richard.

Paramedics checked Claire’s blood pressure and listened to the baby’s heart rate.

The contractions had stopped.

The baby’s heartbeat was strong.

“You’re going to Labor and Delivery for monitoring,” the paramedic said.

“I can walk.”

“You can. You’re still going.”

David stayed beside her.

Before Claire left, Officer Hall photographed the kitchen, the skillet, Claire’s face, the hospital bag, and the papers.

Richard was arrested for domestic assault after officers documented the visible injury and took statements.

Margaret shouted at David as the handcuffs went on.

“You’re destroying this family!”

David looked at her.

“No. I arrived while you were doing that.”

Ethan followed the ambulance in his car.

Claire did not know until he appeared in the hospital corridor.

She immediately told the nurse, “I don’t want him in my room.”

The nurse did not argue.

“Do you want security notified?”

“Yes.”

Ethan heard from ten feet away.

“Claire.”

She turned.

He looked exhausted.

“Please.”

“Leave.”

“I need to explain.”

“You need an attorney.”

“I’m your husband.”

“You blocked a door while your father hit me.”

“I didn’t know he was going to hit you.”

“But after he did, you kept blocking the door.”

His shoulders fell.

“I panicked.”

“So did I. I protected the baby. You protected paperwork.”

Hospital security approached.

Ethan stared at her stomach.

“Is she okay?”

Claire almost answered.

Then she stopped herself.

“You don’t get information from me tonight.”

The doors closed between them.

In Labor and Delivery, Claire was placed on monitors.

The baby’s heartbeat filled the room.

Fast.

Steady.

Alive.

Claire began to cry.

Not loudly.

Just tears slipping sideways into her hair.

David sat beside her.

“I should have come sooner.”

“No.”

“You told me something felt wrong.”

“And you came.”

“I should’ve walked through that door five minutes earlier.”

“Dad.”

He stopped.

“You came.”

That was enough.

Claire’s attorney arrived just after midnight.

Laura Chen had handled the sale of Claire’s software company four years earlier and later worked with an estate attorney to structure Claire’s separate assets.

She read the forged trust amendment first.

“This is worthless if you didn’t execute it.”

“Then why hide it in my bag?”

“Because the copy isn’t what they need.”

Laura pointed to a blank signature block deeper in the packet.

“The bank requires an original signature witnessed and notarized.”

David pulled Margaret’s note from the evidence copies police had allowed them to retain.

KEEP HER INSIDE UNTIL SHE SIGNS THE ORIGINAL.

Laura’s expression hardened.

“That explains this.”

Claire whispered, “They intended to force me.”

“Or pressure you until you convinced yourself it was voluntary.”

The security agreement was more dangerous.

If validly signed, it would pledge Claire’s separately owned securities to secure Mercer Development’s $9.5 million emergency credit line.

If the company defaulted, Northstar Commercial Bank could proceed against the pledged assets according to the agreement.

Claire stared at the number.

“Ethan told me Richard’s company had a difficult quarter.”

Laura looked at her.

“Nine and a half million dollars is not a difficult quarter.”

The petition for conservatorship was worse emotionally, but legally it was not an instant weapon.

Laura explained that Ethan could not simply file a page and become Claire’s conservator.

A court would require statutory grounds, notice or legally justified emergency procedures, and evidence.

“They were building the evidence,” Claire said.

“The skillet.”

David nodded grimly.

Laura examined the drafted affidavit.

Richard claimed Claire had threatened to strike him after becoming irrational about financial documents.

Margaret claimed Claire had demonstrated paranoid beliefs that the Mercer family intended to steal her assets.

“Which is impressive,” Laura said, “considering they apparently intended to use your assets.”

Claire almost laughed.

It came out as a broken sound.

A nurse entered.

“Your husband is asking whether he can leave something for you.”

“No.”

The nurse nodded.

“He says it’s your phone.”

Claire looked at David.

Her phone had been on Margaret’s kitchen counter before the confrontation.

“I thought I had it.”

“You texted me from it.”

“I put it down when Richard started yelling.”

The nurse returned with a sealed plastic patient-belongings bag.

Inside was Claire’s phone.

She unlocked it.

The screen looked normal.

Then she opened her banking app.

Password rejected.

Again.

Rejected.

Laura leaned closer.

“Try your trust portal.”

Claire did.

Password incorrect.

Her email password also failed.

Her stomach went cold.

“Ethan knows some of my passwords.”

Laura sat straighter.

“Which ones?”

“Old ones. I changed them months ago.”

Claire opened her password manager.

It had been logged out.

She attempted account recovery.

The recovery email displayed only partially.

m••••••@mercergroup.com.

Claire stared.

“That’s not mine.”

David’s face changed.

“Whose?”

Claire knew.

“Margaret’s executive email.”

Laura immediately called the bank’s fraud department.

Before they finished, Claire received a text from Ethan.

PLEASE DON’T FREEZE ANYTHING. IF YOU DO, DAD’S LENDER WILL CALL THE LOAN.

Claire read it twice.

Then typed:

How did you change my recovery email?

Three dots appeared.

Vanished.

Appeared again.

Finally:

I can explain everything.

Claire replied:

Start with the truth.

His answer came thirty seconds later.

I already used the forged amendment.

Claire’s hands went numb.

Another message arrived.

Not at the bank. With the board.

Claire looked at Laura.

“What does that mean?”

Laura’s eyes narrowed.

“It means somebody may have represented to Mercer Development’s directors that your assets were already committed.”

Claire looked toward the fetal monitor.

The heartbeat continued.

Strong.

Steady.

Ethan had not only planned to take control of her money.

May you like

He had already used a forged version of her consent to make promises to other people.

And somewhere inside Mercer Development, someone now believed Claire’s fortune belonged to them.
