Chapter 1 - The Man Behind the Glass

Adrian was already gripping Claire by the hair and forcing her face toward the kitchen sink when eight-year-old Emma walked into the penthouse.

“I told you not to call your father behind my back,” Adrian hissed.

“Adrian, stop—”

A pale-purple backpack hit the marble floor.

“Mom!”

Emma ran toward them before Claire could stop her and grabbed Adrian’s arm with both hands.

“Let her go!”

“Emma, stay back!” Claire cried.

Adrian spun.

His forearm struck Emma as he shoved her away.

The little girl stumbled backward and landed beside the hallway console. She was physically unharmed, but the shock shattered whatever composure she had.

She burst into tears.

Claire went still.

Adrian released her hair.

For months, Claire had learned to survive him by measuring her reactions.

Don’t argue when he had been drinking.

Don’t contradict him in front of business associates.

Don’t ask why money disappeared from their joint account.

Don’t mention her father, Daniel Whitmore.

Especially not Daniel.

But Claire was no longer looking at Adrian.

She was looking at Emma.

Her daughter sat on the floor, one hand pressed against the console, her face wet with tears.

Something inside Claire changed.

She shoved Adrian’s hand away, rushed to Emma, and crouched beside her.

“Are you hurt?”

Emma shook her head.

Claire checked her arms, shoulders, and head anyway.

Then she looked over her shoulder.

“You pushed her.”

Adrian’s expression remained cold.

“She shouldn’t jump into adult business.”

“She is eight.”

“She interfered.”

Claire slowly stood.

Behind her, Emma reached toward the backpack.

Adrian stepped closer.

“You caused this when you called your father.”

Claire stared at him.

“I called him because you moved another hundred and twenty thousand dollars.”

“It’s my money.”

“It came from our family trust account.”

“My company will replace it.”

“You said that the last three times.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

Then a small voice came from behind Claire.

“Grandpa…”

Both adults turned.

Emma had pulled a black smartphone from her backpack.

Her hands trembled around it.

“Dad hurt Mommy again.”

Adrian froze.

Claire saw it immediately.

Fear.

Not embarrassment.

Not anger.

Fear.

“Emma,” Adrian said carefully. “Hang up.”

Emma clutched the phone tighter.

“He pushed me too.”

“Give me the phone.”

Claire stepped between them.

“No.”

Adrian stared at her.

Claire’s heart pounded, but she did not move.

Emma listened.

Her sobbing quieted.

Then she looked toward the frosted-glass entry door.

“Grandpa says he’s already here.”

A silhouette appeared behind the glass.

Tall.

Motionless.

Adrian stepped backward.

“No.”

Claire turned toward him.

His face had lost all color.

The door handle moved.

Adrian whispered, “He can’t be here.”

The door opened.

Daniel Whitmore entered the penthouse carrying a dark leather briefcase.

At sixty-three, Claire’s father still had the posture of the federal prosecutor he had once been, though he had left public service twelve years earlier.

His eyes went first to Emma.

Then Claire.

Then Adrian.

He saw Claire’s disheveled hair.

Emma’s tears.

The overturned backpack.

Daniel’s face did not change.

That made him more frightening.

“Emma,” he said calmly. “Come here.”

She ran to him.

Daniel knelt and checked her quickly.

“Did you hit your head?”

“No.”

“Anything hurt?”

She shook her head.

He looked at Claire.

“You?”

“I’m okay.”

Daniel stood.

Adrian found his voice.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

Daniel looked at him.

“No.”

One word.

Nothing dramatic.

Yet Adrian visibly flinched.

Claire watched the exchange.

“You knew something,” she said.

Neither man answered.

Claire looked at her father.

“What does he think you know?”

Daniel rested one hand on Emma’s shoulder.

“Claire, pack a bag for yourself and Emma.”

Adrian moved toward him.

“No one is leaving my home.”

Daniel’s gaze shifted.

“Do not come closer.”

Adrian stopped.

Claire had never seen him obey anyone that quickly.

Daniel opened his briefcase.

Inside were three thick folders.

A flash drive.

And a photograph.

He placed the photograph on the kitchen island.

Claire stared at it.

Adrian was younger in the image.

Maybe twenty-four.

Standing beside another man outside a warehouse.

The other man’s face had been circled in red ink.

Claire did not recognize him.

Adrian did.

His breathing changed.

“Where did you get that?”

Daniel ignored him.

Claire picked up the photograph.

“Who is this?”

Daniel answered.

“Michael Vance.”

The name meant nothing to her.

Apparently it meant everything to Adrian.

“He died eleven years ago,” Daniel continued.

Adrian’s voice dropped.

“That has nothing to do with Claire.”

Daniel looked at him.

“It has everything to do with Claire.”

Claire felt suddenly cold.

“Dad.”

Daniel finally looked at his daughter.

“I warned Adrian eight years ago that if he ever brought what happened into your life, I would tell you everything.”

Claire stared at him.

“You knew Adrian before I introduced you?”

Silence.

Her marriage had begun nine years earlier.

She had believed the first time Daniel met Adrian was at a charity dinner during their engagement.

Now Adrian whispered, “You promised.”

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“I promised silence while my daughter was safe.”

Claire looked from her husband to her father.

“What happened eleven years ago?”

Adrian moved.

Not toward Daniel.

Toward the photograph.

Daniel placed his palm over it first.

“Don’t.”

For several seconds, the two men stared at each other.

Then Daniel said the sentence that changed the shape of Claire’s entire marriage.

“Michael Vance discovered where Adrian’s first fortune really came from.”

Claire turned toward Adrian.

“What first fortune?”

Adrian said nothing.

Daniel continued.

May you like

“And three days after Michael confronted him, Michael was dead.”
