Chapter 5 - Adrian’s Story

Adrian finally gave a formal statement through his attorneys.
He did not deny visiting Thomas Bell.
He explained why.
Michael had called Adrian from the garage.
The two men were fighting over Meridian Recovery Partners.
Michael believed Adrian had hidden profits.
Adrian believed Michael had diverted funds first.
According to Adrian, he went to the garage to confront him.
They argued.
Michael drove away.
Adrian never touched the car.
Claire read the statement beside Maya.
“Could be true.”
“Yes.”
“Could be a lie.”
“Yes.”
“I hate this.”
Maya nodded.
“Uncertainty is miserable.”
Then came the paragraph about Daniel.
Adrian claimed Daniel Whitmore had already begun pressuring Michael to testify against several businesspeople in exchange for immunity.
He accused Daniel of ignoring evidence that Michael himself committed financial crimes.
More seriously, he claimed Daniel threatened Adrian after Michael’s death.
Not just with investigation.
With destruction.
“He said he would make sure I never worked in New York again,” Adrian’s statement read. “He told me if I went near Claire, he would reopen every allegation until something stuck.”
Claire looked at her father that evening.
“Did you say that?”
Daniel sat across from her.
“Yes.”
“Exactly?”
“Not exactly.”
“What did you say?”
He thought.
“I told him that if he exploited you, I would use every lawful resource available to expose him.”
“That’s not the same.”
“No.”
“Did you threaten to ruin him?”
Daniel looked away.
“Yes.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“You hated him before I married him.”
“Yes.”
“And still said nothing.”
“I have apologized.”
“This isn’t about apologies. I’m trying to know what happened.”
Daniel nodded.
Claire placed Adrian’s statement on the table.
“Did Michael commit crimes?”
“Probably.”
“Did you offer him protection?”
“I offered to discuss cooperation with prosecutors handling related matters.”
“So Adrian isn’t inventing everything.”
“No.”
Claire appreciated the answer.
Then:
“Did you have evidence Adrian tampered with Michael’s car?”
“No.”
“Did Thomas Bell accuse him?”
“He implied Adrian had been at the garage. He never said Adrian touched the vehicle.”
“Why did Thomas disappear?”
“I don’t know.”
Claire stared.
“So for eleven years, you suspected Adrian of possibly causing Michael’s death based on timing, business conflict, missing documents, and a mechanic who disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“That is not proof.”
“No.”
“And you let that suspicion influence how you treated my husband for eight years.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Yes.”
Claire stood.
“I need space from you too.”
That hurt him.
She saw it.
But she did not retract it.
She moved with Emma to a furnished apartment temporarily arranged through a friend.
Not the penthouse.
Not Daniel’s brownstone.
A place chosen by Claire.
For the first time since the kitchen incident, she slept six uninterrupted hours.
Freedom arrived first as quiet.
Then as paperwork.
Claire froze joint credit lines.
Changed account credentials.
Removed Adrian’s access to the family trust.
Worked with counsel to challenge Vance Harbor filings.
She also began therapy.
At the second session, her therapist asked:
“What do you want?”
Claire answered automatically.
“To protect Emma.”
“And for yourself?”
Claire had no answer.
That frightened her.
For years, choices had been framed around other people.
Adrian’s company.
Daniel’s protection.
Emma’s stability.
Her marriage.
Her father.
What did Claire want?
She wrote the question in a notebook.
Three days later, Priya called.
“We found something in Vance Harbor’s formation records.”
“What?”
“The submission came from an IP address registered to Hale Urban Capital.”
Claire expected that.
“But the uploaded signature image wasn’t taken from your recent trust forms.”
“Where was it from?”
“Your marriage certificate.”
Claire went silent.
Adrian had possessed a clean scanned signature from their wedding records.
“What does that prove?”
“That whoever formed the company had access to files stored in Adrian’s corporate legal archive.”
Not necessarily Adrian personally.
But close.
Priya continued.
“There’s something else.”
The account opening documents list a verification phone number.
Claire wrote it down.
She did not recognize it.
Priya traced it.
Registered to:
Thomas Bell.
Claire stared.
“That’s impossible.”
“Apparently not.”
“You said he disappeared.”
“He disappeared from ordinary records under his own life.”
“So who owns the number?”
“The carrier records require legal process.”
Claire immediately called Daniel.
“Thomas Bell may be alive.”
Her father said nothing for several seconds.
Then:
“Where?”
“We don’t know.”
“Claire, you need to let law enforcement—”
“I will.”
She stopped him.
“But you do not take over.”
Silence.
Then:
“Understood.”
That night, Claire received an email from an unknown encrypted address.
Subject:
MICHAEL VANCE
Only four lines.
Your husband did not kill Michael.
Your father knows less than he believes.
Adrian knows more than he admits.
Ask him what Michael put in the blue safe-deposit box.
Claire read it twice.
Then forwarded it to Maya.
May you like
Because this time, she was not going to confront anyone alone.
