Chapter 1 - The Camera Above the Sink

Margaret lunged for Daniel’s phone.

Emily moved first.

“Don’t touch it.”

Her voice was quiet, but something in it stopped all three of them.

Daniel stood beside the kitchen island, one hand gripping his phone, the other hanging uselessly at his side—the same hand that had slapped his pregnant wife less than a minute earlier.

Margaret froze.

The stainless-steel frying pan remained on the floor near Emily’s feet.

For weeks, Margaret Mercer had treated it as her kitchen even though the five-bedroom house in Hinsdale, Illinois, belonged to Daniel and Emily. She criticized Emily’s cooking, rearranged cabinets, complained that Daniel worked too hard while Emily “rested,” and had recently begun staying overnight more often than anyone had agreed to.

But today was different.

Today she had thrown a frying pan at Emily’s face.

Then she had thrown herself onto the floor and lied.

Daniel opened the smart-home application.

“Daniel,” Margaret said sharply, abandoning her tears. “I am your mother.”

He looked at her.

Emily watched the confusion move through his face.

Three minutes earlier, there had been no confusion.

Only fury.

Only his mother pointing.

Only his hand striking Emily before asking a single question.

Emily touched her burning cheek.

“Play it.”

Daniel hesitated.

Margaret stepped closer. “You don’t need to humiliate me because she’s dramatic.”

Emily laughed once.

It was a hollow sound.

“Humiliate you?”

Daniel pressed the playback icon.

The kitchen appeared on-screen.

Timestamp: 11:42 a.m.

Emily stood at the sink, one hand braced against her lower back.

Margaret’s recorded voice came clearly through the speaker.

“You trapped him with that baby.”

Daniel looked up.

Margaret’s face changed.

On the recording, Emily turned.

“What did you say?”

“You heard me.”

“Margaret, I’m not doing this.”

“You’ve been doing it since the wedding.”

Then came the pan.

Daniel watched his mother seize it from the drying rack and throw it.

The camera captured Emily ducking.

The pan struck the floor.

Then Margaret heard Daniel’s car outside.

Her entire posture changed.

She looked toward the hallway.

And deliberately fell backward.

Daniel stopped the recording.

Nobody moved.

Emily stared at him.

“Well?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Mom…”

Margaret folded her arms.

“It looks worse than it was.”

Emily blinked.

“You threw a frying pan at my head.”

“I lost my temper.”

“And then accused me of attacking you.”

Margaret turned to Daniel. “Because she has been provoking me for months.”

Daniel looked physically sick.

Emily waited for him to say the one thing she needed.

I’m sorry.

Instead he said, “Why didn’t you tell me things had gotten this bad?”

Something inside Emily broke cleanly.

“I did.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

She continued.

“I told you she called me lazy. You said she was grieving your father. I told you she went through my desk. You said she was lonely. I told you she accused me of using you for money. You said she was old-fashioned.”

“Emily—”

“I told you she frightened me.”

Margaret scoffed. “Oh, please.”

Emily turned.

“Get out.”

Margaret stared at her.

“This is my son’s house.”

“No. This is our home. And you just threw something at me while I’m seven months pregnant.”

Daniel stepped between them.

“Mom, maybe you should go.”

Margaret’s eyes widened.

“You’re choosing her?”

Emily almost laughed again.

Daniel had slapped her thirty seconds after entering the room, yet Margaret spoke as if Emily had somehow won.

Daniel picked up Margaret’s purse.

“Go home. We’ll talk later.”

Margaret’s mouth hardened.

Then she looked at Emily with an expression so cold that Emily felt it in her stomach.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.”

Emily’s hand moved protectively over her belly.

Margaret took her purse.

At the doorway, she turned to Daniel.

“Ask your wife why she was in your office last night.”

Emily frowned.

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

Margaret smiled faintly.

“There it is.”

“What are you talking about?” Emily asked.

“I saw the light under the door.”

Emily stared at her.

“I went in to get the insurance folder for my prenatal paperwork.”

Margaret shrugged.

“Maybe.”

Then she left.

The front door closed.

Daniel and Emily stood in silence.

Finally Daniel said, “Emily…”

She stepped back when he approached.

His face collapsed.

“I’m sorry.”

“You hit me.”

“I know.”

“You didn’t ask what happened.”

“I know.”

“You saw your mother crying and decided I must have attacked her.”

“I made a horrible mistake.”

Emily looked toward the camera.

“No. A mistake is forgetting an anniversary. You believed the worst thing she could say about me because some part of you already thought it was possible.”

“That’s not true.”

“Then why was your first response violence?”

Daniel had no answer.

Emily walked toward the hallway.

He caught himself before touching her.

“Where are you going?”

“Upstairs.”

“Can we talk?”

“Not tonight.”

“Please.”

Emily stopped.

“I want the camera footage.”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

“A copy.”

“For what?”

The question told her everything.

“To protect myself.”

“From Mom?”

Emily met his eyes.

“From both of you.”

His expression changed.

For the first time, Daniel seemed to understand that the slap had changed more than the afternoon.

Emily went upstairs.

Her cheek throbbed.

Her hands shook.

But she downloaded the kitchen footage to her laptop, then uploaded it to a private cloud folder Daniel could not access.

At 2:17 p.m., an email arrived.

The sender was unknown.

The subject contained only two words.

ASK DANIEL.

Attached was a scanned bank statement from Mercer Residential Group, Daniel’s family company.

Emily recognized the company logo.

A red circle surrounded a transfer for $185,000.

Recipient:

MCS CONSULTING LLC.

Beneath the attachment, one sentence had been typed.

Your mother-in-law isn’t afraid of the kitchen camera. She’s afraid of what you’ll discover if Daniel finally starts looking.

Emily stared at the screen.

Then she heard Daniel enter the bedroom behind her.

“What are you looking at?”

Emily slowly turned the laptop toward him.

May you like

Daniel saw the name MCS Consulting.

And all the color drained from his face.
