Chapter 14 - The Leak

The story went public before sunset.

MERCER FAMILY WAR DEEPENS AS CEO’S WIFE LINKED TO CONFIDENTIAL DATA LEAK.

Emily sat in Rebecca’s office while reporters called.

Daniel’s board issued a statement.

Margaret issued another.

Emily issued none.

“Silence looks guilty,” Daniel said.

Rebecca disagreed.

“Speculation passes. Sworn testimony lasts.”

The leaked drive contained damaging material about everyone.

MCS.

Willow Creek.

Robert’s suspicions.

Daniel’s indemnity agreement.

Margaret’s disputed property documents.

By exposing everything at once, the anonymous leaker had created chaos.

Margaret’s motive seemed obvious.

But proving she caused the leak was harder.

The file-upload account had been created through a privacy service.

The study camera outage had been triggered through Emily’s compromised smart-home login.

Again, all roads pointed toward her.

Daniel received a call from the company’s interim CEO.

A major lender was freezing new credit.

Two development partners invoked review clauses.

Mercer Residential was not bankrupt.

But it was bleeding.

“If this continues,” Daniel said, “we’ll have to sell projects at a loss.”

Emily looked at him.

“Then sell them.”

He stared.

“What?”

“Save employees. Save the viable parts. Stop treating your father’s company like a sacred object.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain.”

“My entire life, Dad told me this company would be mine.”

“And your mother used that fear to control you.”

“It isn’t fear.”

“Yes, it is.”

He stood.

“You can walk away from it because it isn’t your family.”

Emily rose too.

“I have spent weeks being attacked because of your family.”

“That isn’t what I meant.”

“You keep saying things you don’t mean after you say them.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Emily continued.

“You nearly lost me because you protected a building full of accounts, land, and a name on a wall.”

“That company is five hundred families.”

“Then protect the people. Not your ego.”

Daniel stared at her.

The truth hurt.

She saw it.

This time she meant for it to.

And this time she did not regret it.

The next morning, Daniel publicly supported the interim CEO’s restructuring plan.

They would sell two stalled projects, preserve payroll, and cooperate with lenders.

Margaret immediately opposed the sales.

Why?

Because one project was partially owned through an investment entity connected to MCS.

The forensic accountants found it.

A hidden partnership.

Margaret had used diverted funds as capital in a side entity that acquired land adjacent to Mercer Residential developments.

When Mercer projects increased surrounding property values, Margaret’s entity profited.

The scheme was larger than fake consulting invoices.

She had been exploiting confidential company plans for personal gain.

Estimated benefit: more than four million dollars.

Daniel sat in the audit meeting stunned.

“She was trading on our own projects.”

The lead accountant nodded.

“Through entities that appear connected to her.”

Margaret’s position weakened dramatically.

But she still had the leak accusation against Emily.

Then Rebecca found the first crack.

The leaked files included a scanned photograph that had never been stored on Robert’s external drive.

Lucia’s fireplace photograph.

Only four people possessed that image.

Lucia.

Emily.

Rebecca.

And Daniel.

Emily frowned.

“Margaret had it too.”

“How?”

“She paid Lucia for silence six months after Robert died.”

Rebecca called Lucia.

Lucia confirmed Margaret photographed the image with her phone during their original confrontation.

Now the leak could have been assembled from more than Robert’s drive.

Someone had combined sources to make it appear Emily leaked everything she possessed.

That someone needed knowledge of Emily’s evidence collection.

Daniel asked, “Who knew what Emily had?”

Rebecca answered carefully.

“You. Me. Charles. Possibly Margaret through discovery.”

Charles reviewed disclosures.

The fireplace photo had not yet been produced.

Margaret should not officially have known Emily possessed it.

But she had her own copy.

The frame weakened.

Then the biggest break came from an unexpected source.

One of Margaret’s movers.

His name was Eric Dawson.

He called Daniel after seeing the news.

During the four-hour property retrieval, Eric had carried boxes from the second floor.

He saw Margaret enter Daniel’s study while the neutral supervisor was downstairs.

“She came out holding something small,” he said.

“What?”

“Like a black hard drive.”

“Why didn’t you tell the supervisor?”

“I didn’t know it mattered.”

“Will you sign a statement?”

Eric hesitated.

Then said yes.

Margaret’s attorney attacked his credibility immediately.

Eric had a prior misdemeanor theft conviction from ten years earlier.

Power shifted back.

Then Eric mentioned something else.

Margaret had not been alone in the study.

A man was with her.

Emily leaned forward.

“Who?”

Eric described him.

Late thirties.

Tall.

Dark hair.

Blue suit.

Daniel’s face changed.

“I know who that is.”

“Who?”

“Victor Lang.”

Margaret’s personal attorney.

Charles frowned.

“He wasn’t listed as present.”

Daniel nodded.

“He specializes in trusts and asset protection.”

Emily asked the obvious question.

“Why would an asset-protection lawyer sneak into your study during a supervised property retrieval?”

Nobody answered.

They didn’t need to.

The conspiracy now had another participant.

And Victor Lang knew where Margaret’s money was hidden.
