Chapter 16 - The Last Flight

The guarantee could be challenged.
But not quickly.
Asterion’s lender issued a default notice.
Adrian had intentionally stopped payment.
If the guarantee held, creditors could pursue assets tied to my personal holding company.
At the same time, Bennett vendors accelerated claims.
The neutral fiduciary scheduled an emergency vote for Friday morning.
The charter division could be sold by noon.
Federal charges were expected Friday afternoon.
Adrian had created a race.
By Thursday night, every path converged.
The board.
The lender.
The criminal investigation.
The Lisbon safe.
The marriage agreement.
The vendor shells.
My personal guarantee.
And one aircraft.
Adrian had arranged a departure from a private terminal at dawn.
Not on a Bennett jet.
A chartered Global 6000.
Destination: Lisbon.
He was going back for the documents before authorities could secure them.
Detective Ruiz could not stop a lawful international departure without a warrant.
The prosecutors were still finalizing charges.
Vanessa said, “If he reaches the house, the agreement disappears.”
Daniel said, “We don’t need the original marriage agreement to prove every other offense.”
“But we need it to prove he intentionally deceived Laura before the wedding,” Vanessa replied.
She was right.
Then Priya brought another discovery.
The lender behind my personal guarantee had an emergency verification clause.
If we could prove the underlying Asterion debt arose from undisclosed self-dealing, enforcement could be stayed.
The proof sat in the Lisbon safe.
Same documents.
Same deadline.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Can you open the safe?”
“Maybe.”
“You said the code changed.”
“There’s a physical override.”
“What kind?”
“A key.”
My skin prickled.
“What key?”
“Small metal. Flat head. Michael kept it in his passport wallet.”
The key from the jet.
Police evidence.
Everything returned to that moment.
Detective Ruiz obtained permission to use it under supervision because the key had evidentiary connection to the scheme.
A Portuguese attorney and local authorities were contacted.
But no one could reach the house before Adrian if he departed at dawn.
Then Vanessa said, “There’s a duplicate safe.”
“What?”
“Not a duplicate safe. A mirrored archive.”
“Where?”
“On the jet.”
“What jet?”
“The aircraft you found us on.”
I stared at her.
“The rear compartment?”
She nodded.
“The cash compartment has an electronic subpanel. Michael stored encrypted backups there.”
Airport police had seized the visible items but had not dismantled the aircraft cabinetry.
The company jet remained impounded at Teterboro due the ownership dispute.
We drove there at midnight with investigators.
Rain had stopped.
The jet sat silent beneath white hangar lights.
I walked up the same stairs where my life had split open days earlier.
The cabin smelled faintly of leather and champagne.
The two glasses were gone.
The rear panel remained sealed with evidence tape.
Investigators opened it.
Vanessa pointed to an interior seam.
“Behind that.”
Technicians removed a narrow panel.
A data module appeared.
Encrypted.
Priya’s team began imaging it.
At 2:14 a.m., files appeared.
Vendor agreements.
Asterion accounts.
The original Vanessa-Michael marital agreement.
And the secured-guarantee template.
Metadata showed Adrian had taken my real signed page from an old aircraft-consent form and digitally attached it to a different guarantee.
The signature was real.
The document was fraudulent.
Our evidence was complete enough to stop the lender.
Then one final folder appeared.
EXIT — FINAL
Inside was Adrian’s plan.
Sell charter division.
Move $36 million.
Abandon Vanessa in Lisbon.
Fly onward under Michael Vale.
Liquidate Asterion.
And leave me fighting the company, lenders, and questions about my father.
At the bottom was a note:
If Laura discovers before departure, offer Richard video. She always chooses family truth over money. Use that.
He had predicted me.
Even my need for truth had become something he expected to manipulate.
I looked at the cream seat where Vanessa had stood wearing my coat.
Then at the cabin door.
“No more.”
Detective Ruiz’s phone rang.
She listened.
Then nodded.
“The warrant is signed.”
“For Adrian?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa exhaled.
“Where is he?”
Ruiz looked at me.
“At the private terminal.”
Preparing to board his final flight.
Chapter 16 had brought every hidden route to the same place where the story began.
There was no negotiation left.
No private bargain.
No marriage to save.
May you like
No company secret worth hiding.
The final confrontation was unavoidable.
