Chapter 5 - Vanessa’s Bargain

Vanessa contacted me two days later.

She wanted immunity from civil claims.

I laughed when Daniel told me.

“She wore my coat while my husband hit me.”

“She may also be a key witness.”

“She helped him.”

“Yes.”

“I’m not rewarding her.”

Daniel folded his hands.

“You don’t have to forgive someone to use the truth they possess.”

I hated that he was right.

We met at Daniel’s office with Vanessa’s attorney present.

She wore black.

No satin.

No smirk.

No borrowed coat.

For the first time, she looked tired.

I placed the gold wedding-ring photograph on the table.

“Are you still married to him?”

“Yes.”

“Legally?”

“As far as I know.”

“Why did you let him marry me?”

Her jaw tightened.

“Because Michael told me it was temporary.”

“Six years?”

“He said your father’s trust required stability until the succession period ended.”

“What succession period?”

Vanessa looked surprised.

“You don’t know?”

My father’s trust kept my forty-eight percent under enhanced transfer restrictions until I turned forty.

My fortieth birthday was fourteen months away.

Adrian had always called it an outdated estate provision.

Vanessa said, “Richard structured the trust so you couldn’t sell or pledge your voting shares without an independent trustee until forty.”

“I know.”

“Michael said once you turned forty, the restrictions would relax.”

“Then why forge a proxy now?”

“Because you hired outside auditors.”

I had.

Three months earlier.

After discovering unexplained charter-division expenses.

Vanessa continued.

“You triggered the timeline.”

“What timeline?”

“The exit.”

My mouth went dry.

Adrian and Vanessa had always planned to leave.

The affair was not a new betrayal.

It was the original marriage reappearing when their scheme neared completion.

“What did he promise you?”

Vanessa looked away.

“Twenty million.”

“For waiting while he played husband to me?”

Her attorney interrupted.

“Laura—”

“No. She gets to answer.”

Vanessa’s eyes hardened.

“Yes.”

“Did you love him?”

“That isn’t relevant.”

“It became relevant when you climbed onto my plane in my coat.”

Her face changed.

“I loved him before he knew your name.”

The cruelty hit, but not as hard as it would have days earlier.

“And did he love you?”

Vanessa said nothing.

That silence was the first crack between them.

I leaned forward.

“He was leaving you too, wasn’t he?”

Her attorney glanced at her.

Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.

“Michael told me we were going to Lisbon.”

“You were.”

“No.”

She slid a printed flight amendment across the table.

The jet’s final filed route had been changed an hour before departure.

Teterboro to Lisbon.

Then Lisbon to Dubai.

Only one passenger listed for the second leg.

Michael Vale.

“He planned to leave you in Portugal.”

Vanessa looked at the table.

“So you found out after police stopped the plane.”

“Yes.”

My husband had betrayed his mistress while escaping with her.

The symmetry would have been satisfying if it weren’t built over my life.

“What do you know about my father?”

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“Richard hired Michael and me ten years ago.”

“To hide money?”

“To recover it first.”

“And then?”

“We discovered Richard had falsified disclosures to his lenders.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

He knew pieces.

Not all.

Vanessa continued.

“Michael told Richard we could protect him.”

“For money.”

“For leverage.”

“What weakness did you find?”

Vanessa looked directly at me.

“You.”

I felt my pulse in my throat.

“Explain.”

“Richard was terrified the scandal would destroy your inheritance and your opinion of him.”

“So?”

“Michael told him the safest thing was to keep someone close to you who understood the hidden accounts.”

“Adrian.”

“Yes.”

“Did my father tell him to marry me?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“Not at first.”

There it was.

“At first?”

“Later, Richard realized you trusted Michael.”

“Adrian.”

“Michael.”

She insisted on the real name.

“He told him not to hurt you.”

I laughed bitterly.

“That went well.”

Vanessa’s voice dropped.

“Richard also offered him ten million dollars if he stayed with you until the trust restrictions expired.”

Daniel swore.

My father had placed a price on my marriage.

“Do you have proof?”

Vanessa nodded.

“A recording.”

“Where?”

“Michael has it.”

“Then why tell me?”

“Because there’s another copy.”

She reached into her bag.

Not the recording.

A storage receipt.

Airport bonded-storage facility.

Locker 214.

“Inside is a duplicate drive.”

Daniel examined the receipt.

“Why didn’t you bring it?”

Vanessa gave a sad smile.

“Because I’m not stupid enough to arrive with the only leverage keeping Michael from destroying me.”

I looked at her.

“What do you want?”

“Protection from him.”

“You helped him destroy me.”

“Yes.”

“And now you want me to save you.”

“Yes.”

At least she did not pretend otherwise.

Then she said the one thing that made refusing impossible.

“The drive also contains Richard Bennett’s final instructions to Michael.”

May you like

My father had died believing his secret was safe.

Now I was about to hear what he had ordered my husband to do with me.
