Chapter 2 - The Folder Called “After Sarah”

The Celestine returned to Newport Harbor under a sky that looked absurdly peaceful.
Sarah sat in the yacht’s medical suite while the ship’s doctor examined her shoulder and upper back.
“No fracture that I can detect,” Dr. Henry Moss said. “But I want imaging once you’re ashore.”
“What about my wrist?”
“Sprained, most likely.”
Sarah barely heard him.
Across the room, Lucas sat beside Daniel.
He still held his smartphone.
Daniel had asked him three times not to open the copied USB files again.
Lucas had obeyed.
Vanessa was confined to a crew lounge with the captain and chief security officer outside.
Because the assault occurred while the yacht was approaching Newport and later docked there, local police were contacted immediately. Attorneys would sort jurisdictional details if necessary.
Sarah cared about one thing.
“What is in ‘After Sarah’?”
Daniel looked at her.
“We wait until police make a forensic copy.”
“She attacked me over it.”
“I know.”
“She entered my bedroom.”
“I know.”
“She mentioned Nathan.”
“I heard her.”
Sarah stared at him.
“You sound calm.”
“I’m trying to be.”
“You always try to be calm when your family is involved.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Not now.”
Sarah knew she had cut him.
Part of her wanted to.
That frightened her.
Lucas looked between them.
“Mom?”
Sarah stopped.
None of this belonged on his shoulders.
She crossed the room and sat beside him despite the pain in her back.
“You did the right thing recording.”
Lucas’s eyes filled.
“I should’ve yelled sooner.”
“No.”
“She hit you twice.”
“You are eleven years old.”
“I saw her grab the bucket.”
Sarah took his hand.
“You recorded. You called Dad. You told the truth. That was enough.”
Daniel looked away.
Sarah knew why.
Because Lucas had acted while Daniel had still been deciding whom to believe.
Newport police boarded shortly after docking.
Vanessa requested an attorney before answering questions.
The original USB could not immediately be recovered from the harbor.
But Lucas’s copy existed on his laptop and phone cloud storage.
A detective named Elena Ruiz took possession of the devices temporarily, with Daniel’s consent, to create forensic images while preserving originals.
By evening, Sarah had undergone X-rays at Newport Hospital.
No broken bones.
Severe bruising.
A shoulder strain.
She returned to the family’s rented waterfront residence with Daniel and Lucas just after eight.
Vanessa remained under investigation.
Sarah walked directly into the library where Detective Ruiz and a digital-forensics specialist had prepared a read-only copy of Lucas’s files.
There were five main folders.
SARAH.
DANIEL.
LUCAS.
COMPANY.
AFTER SARAH.
Sarah’s stomach tightened at the sight of her son’s name.
“Open mine first.”
Daniel said, “Sarah—”
“Mine.”
The specialist clicked.
There were thirty-eight video files.
Most were timestamped between 12:30 a.m. and 3:00 a.m.
The first showed a corridor outside Sarah and Daniel’s master suite aboard the Celestine.
Vanessa entered using a service key.
She looked both directions.
Then disappeared inside.
The footage switched to another angle.
Sarah’s bedroom.
Sarah stared.
“There is no camera in my bedroom.”
Detective Ruiz said, “Apparently there was.”
The image came from a tiny hidden device near the bookshelf.
Sarah could see herself sleeping beside Daniel.
She felt violated in a way the champagne bucket had not achieved.
Vanessa entered.
She moved to Sarah’s vanity.
Opened a drawer.
Photographed documents.
Then approached the desk.
The next clip showed Vanessa placing a thin device behind Sarah’s laptop.
“A keylogger?” Daniel asked.
The specialist nodded.
“Could be.”
Another clip.
Vanessa used Sarah’s unlocked tablet.
Another.
She photographed Sarah’s passport.
Another.
She opened a leather stationery box and removed old handwritten letters.
“What is she doing?” Daniel whispered.
“Collecting handwriting,” Sarah said.
The next video proved it.
Vanessa laid Sarah’s signatures side by side and photographed them.
Sarah looked at Detective Ruiz.
“She was preparing forgeries.”
“Potentially.”
Lucas shifted beside them.
“Keep watching.”
Another clip showed Vanessa at the safe behind the wardrobe panel.
Sarah frowned.
“She doesn’t know the combination.”
Vanessa did not need it.
She removed a small black device from her pocket, attached it near the keypad, and waited.
The next evening’s video showed Sarah opening the safe.
The hidden camera had captured her hand.
Vanessa returned later.
Entered the code.
Opened the safe.
Daniel stood.
“She opened our safe.”
Sarah watched Vanessa remove a blue folder.
Insurance papers.
Property records.
Share certificates.
Then Vanessa replaced everything.
Except one item.
A sealed red envelope.
Sarah leaned toward the screen.
“What is that?”
Daniel went still.
Sarah noticed.
“Daniel.”
He did not answer.
She turned.
“You know what that is.”
His face had changed.
“Maybe.”
“What is it?”
“Keep watching.”
Sarah’s anger rose.
“No. Tell me.”
Detective Ruiz interrupted quietly.
“We should continue in order.”
Sarah hated being told to wait.
But she nodded.
The last clip in the SARAH folder showed Vanessa searching frantically through the safe.
The red envelope was no longer there.
Someone had moved it.
Vanessa whispered into her phone:
“It’s gone.”
A male voice answered through the speaker.
“Then find it.”
Sarah recognized the voice.
Daniel did too.
His face became rigid.
Nathan.
Vanessa said, “She must have moved it.”
Nathan replied:
“You have three days before Monaco. If Sarah reads what Edward wrote, we lose the vote.”
Sarah felt the room become colder.
Edward Whitmore.
Daniel and Nathan’s father.
Dead fourteen months.
Daniel looked ill.
Sarah turned to him.
“What did your father write?”
Daniel’s silence lasted too long.
Then Lucas said:
“Mom.”
He pointed toward the screen.
The video continued.
Vanessa asked Nathan:
“What if I can’t find it?”
Nathan answered:
“Then we use the second plan.”
“What second plan?”
A pause.
Then Nathan’s voice:
“We make Daniel believe Sarah already betrayed him.”
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Sarah looked at her husband.
“What red envelope?”
Daniel swallowed.
“My father gave me one before he died.”
“You said it was in our safe?”
“Yes.”
“And then it disappeared?”
“No.”
Sarah stared.
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“I moved it.”
“Where?”
“My Manhattan office.”
“Why?”
He looked at Detective Ruiz.
Then at Lucas.
May you like
Then back at Sarah.
“Because it contains something I should have shown you a year ago.”
