Chapter 6 - Daniel’s Silence

The emergency board meeting lasted twenty-three minutes before becoming a war.

Nathan Whitmore sat at the head of the table.

At forty-eight, he was broader than Daniel, more charismatic in public, and far better at making aggression sound like stewardship.

“Whitmore Maritime requires capital,” Nathan said. “Cormorant provides it.”

Sarah sat beside Rachel.

Daniel sat opposite his brother.

Nathan continued.

“Family dysfunction should not be allowed to destroy a company employing twenty-seven hundred people.”

Sarah almost admired the framing.

Nathan had paid a woman who attacked Sarah, but somehow Sarah’s discovery was the threat to employees.

Daniel spoke.

“Did Bluewater pay Vanessa Cole?”

Nathan smiled.

“Bluewater pays hundreds of contractors.”

“Did you direct Vanessa to search my wife’s bedroom?”

“No.”

“We have your voice.”

“You have a copied digital file found by an eleven-year-old.”

Sarah’s hand tightened.

“Careful.”

Nathan turned to her.

“That is not an insult to Lucas. It is an evidentiary fact.”

“You’re using my son’s age because the recording hurts you.”

“I’m saying a USB with no established chain of custody can be manipulated.”

Rachel whispered, “Don’t engage.”

Sarah forced herself silent.

Nathan looked toward the directors.

“Meanwhile, my brother concealed meetings with a financing adviser, approved Bluewater invoices himself, and now claims ignorance.”

Daniel did not flinch.

“I approved them.”

Nathan smiled.

There.

Daniel continued.

“And I failed to investigate warning signs.”

Nathan’s smile faded.

“I was negligent.”

Silence.

“But I did not authorize theft.”

“You can prove that?”

“No.”

Daniel looked around the table.

“But I can disclose what I did and let an independent investigation decide.”

Sarah watched him.

It was the first time Daniel had chosen uncertainty over family narrative.

Nathan hated it.

He changed direction.

“Then perhaps Daniel should step aside as CEO pending investigation.”

Three directors shifted uncomfortably.

The idea was dangerous because it was reasonable.

Sarah realized Nathan had planned for Daniel’s honesty too.

After the meeting, Daniel walked with Sarah toward the elevators.

“I may be suspended.”

“You may deserve to be.”

He looked at her.

She did not soften it.

“You signed documents without review.”

“Yes.”

“You hid your concerns.”

“Yes.”

“You hid the red envelope.”

“Yes.”

He exhaled.

“I know.”

Sarah stopped.

“No. I need you to understand something.”

“What?”

“Nathan’s guilt doesn’t make you innocent.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“I never said it did.”

“Good.”

She entered the elevator.

He followed.

That evening, Priya traced more Bluewater payments.

$480,000 to Vanessa.

$2.1 million to Arden Services.

$3.4 million to a Cayman investment feeder later returned to a domestic account.

$1.2 million to an apartment owned through an LLC.

Occupant:

Vanessa Cole.

Sarah stared.

“She owns a $1.2 million apartment?”

“Technically Bluewater owns it.”

“Why give a maid that much?”

Priya looked at the transfer dates.

“Not all at once.”

Daniel said, “She was being compensated.”

Sarah shook her head.

“That isn’t compensation for stealing documents.”

“What then?”

“Silence.”

They reviewed Vanessa’s old background file.

Her employment application claimed she had worked for a hospitality agency before joining Sarah.

The agency had closed.

The supervisor number belonged to a prepaid phone.

The references were false.

“She was placed with us,” Sarah said.

Daniel looked at her.

“By Nathan?”

“Or Edward.”

The audio proved Edward knew Vanessa before Sarah hired her.

That contradiction became urgent.

Rachel arranged for Vanessa’s attorney to receive a limited cooperation offer from prosecutors.

No immunity.

But consideration if she provided truthful information.

Vanessa refused.

Then she asked to speak with Sarah.

Rachel said no.

Sarah said yes.

They met in a secured interview room with attorneys present.

Vanessa wore county-issued clothing while charges relating to the yacht assault were pending.

The polished personal maid was gone.

For the first time, Sarah noticed how tired she looked.

“You wanted to see me.”

Vanessa looked at Sarah’s shoulder.

“I didn’t mean to hurt you that badly.”

Sarah almost laughed.

“You swung a metal bucket twice.”

“I panicked.”

“Over a USB.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Vanessa looked toward her lawyer.

He gave no reaction.

Sarah leaned forward.

“Edward hired you first.”

Vanessa’s eyes flickered.

There.

“You were supposed to tell me about Nathan.”

“I was supposed to watch.”

“Watch what?”

“You.”

“Why?”

“To see whether Nathan approached you.”

Sarah stared.

“Edward planted you in my home?”

“He asked me to accept the position when your previous assistant left.”

“Without telling me.”

“Yes.”

“Why would you agree?”

Vanessa looked down.

“Money.”

“How much?”

“Five thousand a month privately.”

Sarah felt another betrayal from a dead man.

“And after Edward died?”

“Payments stopped.”

“Nathan found out.”

Vanessa nodded.

“How?”

“He found one of Edward’s instructions in his desk.”

“And he bought you.”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“He paid me what Edward promised.”

“To spy on me.”

“To find the red envelope.”

“To forge my signature.”

Vanessa did not answer.

Sarah said, “He gave you an apartment.”

“Not mine.”

“Bluewater’s.”

“Yes.”

“Why record yourself entering my bedroom?”

Vanessa finally looked at her.

“I didn’t.”

“The USB has video.”

“That footage came from the hidden cameras Nathan made me install.”

Sarah felt cold.

“Why did you keep copies?”

Vanessa’s mouth tightened.

“Because I stopped trusting him.”

Sarah understood.

The USB was Vanessa’s insurance.

A private archive of the crimes she was helping commit.

“Then what is ‘After Sarah’?”

Vanessa’s eyes moved away.

“Ask Daniel.”

Sarah turned.

Daniel stiffened.

Vanessa gave a bitter smile.

“He still hasn’t told you?”

Sarah’s patience snapped.

“Tell me.”

May you like

Vanessa whispered:

“After Sarah was the plan for what happens to your shares if Daniel divorces you.”
